Museo Archeologico dell’Alto Adige

While in Bolzano if you don’t see anything else, visit the museum’s Ice Man exhibition. You will never see a man whose clothing and equipment have been preserved in ice for 5,300 years anywhere else in the world.

Cathedral

A Gothic parish church dating from the 14th-15th centuries stands at the square’s southwest corner. A striking roof of patterned tiles extends from an elegant 65-meter-high spire carved in sandstone from 1504 to 1519.

Dominican Church and St. John’s Chapel

One of the earliest Gothic buildings in Sudtirol, the Gothic Dominican church was built in the 13th century and remodeled in 1498 to include the three naves we see today. A fine late 14th-century fresco can be found on the church’s west wall, and Friedrich Pacher painted frescoes in the cloister in 1496.

Renon Cable Car

This cable car connects Bolzano with the plateau of Soprabolzano (Oberbozen in German). Within 12 minutes, the 4560-meter cableway rises 950 meters, offering panoramic views of the Dolomites and views of the city.

Castel Roncolo

Situated on a cliff just outside Bolzano, the 13th-century Roncolo castle, also known as Runkelstein in German, contains astonishing 14th- and 15th-century frescoes. In contrast to most frescoes from that period, the Roncolo frescoes portray scenes from everyday court life rather than religious subjects.

Mountain Museum

Exhibits, art, and relics that describe the surrounding peaks fill the halls, courtyards, and even turrets of Firmian Castle. Reinhold Messner’s collections provide a fuller picture of the Dolomites and the people who lived among them and attempted to conquer them.

Piazza Walther and Via dei Portici

Bolzano’s central square is the Piazza Walther (Waltherplatz), which hosts markets and festivals, including a Christmas market in December. The arcaded Via dei Portici (Laubengasse) is the town’s principal shopping street, with fine 17th-century townhouses to the north.

Franciscan Monastery

Located north of Piazza delle Erbe, the monastery dates back to the 12th century. The church’s vaulted ceiling dates back to the 15th century, with stained-glass windows from the 20th century. About 1500, a fine Late Gothic altar of carved and painted wood by Hans Klocker can be found in the Lady Chapel.

Naturmuseum Sudtirol

This small museum is a great place to visit with children and those interested in the wildlife and geology of the Sudtirol region. As explained by permanent exhibits, dolomites were formed from warm sea reefs during the Triassic Age.
