Brandenburg an der Havel was the capital of the Margravate of Brandenburg until 1417, when Berlin became the capital.
The city is located on the banks of the River Havel and has a population of 72,040 (as of 2020). In medieval times, the town of Brandenburg gave its name to the Bishopric of Brandenburg, the Margraviate of Brandenburg, and the current state of Brandenburg. Brandenburg and Prussia were initially centered in this town, which today is a small town compared to nearby Berlin.
A combination of braniti – to protect/defend – and bor – forest/wood, gives rise to its name. The German King Henry, the Fowler of Saxony, conquered Brenna in 929 after the Battle of Lenzen, a fort of the West Slavic tribe Stodoranie. Brennaburg was first mentioned in documents at this time. The German King received tribute from all the tribes between the Middle Elbe and Middle Oder after King Henry’s death. The bishoprics of Brandenburg and Havelburg were established in 948 at the Magdeburg Assembly of Princes. As a result, these new sees fell under the control of Otto’ the Great’. The area east of the Elbe remained under the control of Slavic chiefs of the Hevelli tribe until the middle of the 12th century. In 983, there was a major Slav uprising involving numerous tribes. Pribislav died in 1150, the last of them.
Upon the death of Pribislav, his widow Petrissa enabled Albert I ‘the Bear’ to take over Brandenburg fort jointly with the Germans and Slavs. The Margrave of Brandenburg now referred to Albert by his title. As early as 1160, nobility, burghers, and peasants from the Schwabengau area (Harz), the Netherlands, the Rhineland, and Westphalia began to settle the Elbe-Havel-Spree basin. On Brandenburg’s cathedral island, the foundation stone for a cathedral was laid in 1165, and the Bear’s sons and Albert the Bear consecrated it five years later. It was restricted to the western bank of the Havel until 1196 when the town was extended eastward. Historically, the old, new, and Brandenburg cathedral districts were considered three separate towns on either side of the river.
Old Town and New Town joined the Hanseatic League in 1314–1315. Due to plundering and destruction during the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648), Potsdam became the new capital, and Brandenburg’s court left. A single town was formed when Old Town and New Town merged in 1715. A new district was added to the Brandenburg cathedral district in 1928.
There are two routes through the city that vessels can use to travel along the navigable River Havel, a European Waterway. Initially, the route used the Brandenburg City Canal, a 4-kilometer (2.5-mile) route through the city center that descends through the Stadtschleuse Brandenburg. However, the canal is now restricted in size and currently only available to leisure craft. Commercial traffic instead uses the Silo Canal that passes through the eastern and northern fringes of the city.
