Bray is a coastal town in North County Wicklow, Ireland. It’s 20 km south of Dublin city center on the east coast and has a population of 32,600 people making it the ninth largest urban area in Ireland.
Unfortunately, there’s no one way to verify if a given name is an ancient local name or not. One popular idea is that it may be from the Irish Bré, meaning ‘mouth.’ In 1875 a misunderstanding occurred that resulted in the Irish name “Bray” being ascribed erroneously to the Irish word for “hill.” The Gaelic League publication drew attention to the need for Irish language postal addresses for towns, and Seosamh Laoide coined the word “Brí Cualann” meaning “Brí in Cualu”. Despite being discredited by Liam Price and Osborn Bergin, Brí and Brí C[h]ualann remained in use. The Gaelic names were then adopted as statutory surnames in 1975, despite these facts.
In medieval times, Bray was on the southern border of the Pale, and the coastal district was governed directly by the English crown from Dublin Castle. Inland, the countryside was largely under the control of Gaelic Chieftains, such as O’Toole. Bray features very prominently on this map as “Brey”, in which the Earl of Meath purchased a large estate in the city. During the 1800s, Bray was a small manorial village that mainly served people living in the Dublin middle class. By the latter part of this century, the Dublin middle class started to move to Bray.
Ireland’s first railway opened in 1834 and was extended to Bray in 1854. With it, the town became a seaside resort. Brighton was built as a planned resort town in 1823. It was shaped like a seaside town that’s popular across the English south coast, specifically Brighton, and it brought life to the city and nearby regions. Hotels and residential terraces were built near Brighton’s seafront. William Dargan developed a Turkish baths-style building in 1859 called the Moorish style for £10,000. It was demolished in 1980.
Bray was a popular destination from the 1860s onwards. While small amenities such as regattas and firework displays were plentiful in the town, Bray failed to secure the necessary capital to develop and sustain major attractions, thus lapsing into economic decline by the early 1900s. Pleasure piers were a well-known feature of beach resorts in the 1800s. The Palace Pier at Bray was not established and did not open in 1906 as originally planned. You can still see some of these amenities in today’s Newport City Centre. They might not have been built originally, but they’re quite a sight to behold. The popularity of Bray as a seaside resort experienced a brief revival after World War II. However, the property was said to have lost many customers when foreign travel became an option. Its proximity to Dublin makes it a perfect destination for day-trippers from the capital city, who can enjoy scenic countryside walks and a thriving cultural scene.
The town of Shankill is situated on the east coast south of County Dublin. Its neighboring County, Dublin, is to the north, and Wicklow is to the south. The village of Enniskerry lies west of it at an elevation in the Wicklow Mountains. People participate in sports like sailing, rowing, and swimming. The beach and seafront promenade is popular with residents and visitors. While Bray’s promenade and south beach are both Blue Flags, the north beach has been impacted by erosion and leaching pollution since its closure and sale.
Bray has a temperate oceanic climate (Köppen: Cfb), meaning there isn’t a whole lot of variation in the temperature, and it is rain or sweat almost all year round. However, Bray is near the Wicklow Mountains in Ireland. It receives potentially 3000mm of rain per year and is one of the sunniest months. October has around 700mm of rain – that’s about three times as much!
Dublin has an increasing population of temporary residents with seasonally more tourists. They visit Bray to enjoy the warmer weather.
32,600 (2016)
Bray is represented by two local electoral areas. Bray East is approximately two-thirds of Bray while Bray West is the other third and includes the neighboring villages of Enniskerry and Kilmacanogue as well as a few small townlands such as Glencree. The Municipal District includes both of these areas.
For generations, Dublin has been a favored summer destination for wealthier citizens of the city, with travel from every corner of Ireland. The town is known internationally for its picturesque spots which complement the Hollywood lifestyle. The appliances required for the accommodation and comfort of tourists, as well as those who are living there, include refrigerators in their bungalows and a wide variety of other things. You’ll find that there are plenty of accommodations to choose from in North Conway. Whether you stay in a low-cost motel or an upscale full-service hotel, your stay will surely be comfortable and you’ll have a great time in the great outdoors.

Bray Wheelers Cycling Club, Brennanstown Riding School, Bray Sailing Club, Wicklow Lawn Tennis Club, and the much older Wicklow County Cricket Club all enjoy locations in Bray.
There are many primary schools in the Bray area, including national schools, gaelscoileanna, and a co-educational day school (St. Gerard’s School). There are several secondary schools in the area. Some notable ones include Saint Brendan’s College, Loreto Secondary School, St. Kilian’s Community School, and Presentation College, Bray. There are also many “English as a foreign language” and third-level schools operating locally as well.
Bray has several commercial and industrial parks in the city, including Bray Industrial Estate, Killarney Road Industrial Estate, Solus Tower Industrial Estate, and Southern Cross Business Park.
