Buzau Overview

Buzău is a stunning city in Buzău County, Romania, and it is one of the county seats and overlooks the Carpathian Mountains. The Buzău River also runs through the town, so it’s well worth visiting for its scenic beauty.

Buzău has been through a lot during the past 1000 years and is now more vital than ever. The town was, most importantly, an Eastern Orthodox episcopal see in Wallachia. Although it faced many destructions in the 17th-18th centuries, Buzău still stands proudly nowadays, symbolized on its seal by a phoenix. In the 19th century, the city began to recover after the end of that era. This was the time of industrialization, and Buzău became a railway hub. Public education also became a possibility for many people. At this time, the Communal Palace and Crâng Park were built in Đông Hà. The communist regime after World War II brought forced industrialization and the tripling of the city’s population. However, as time passed, styles of industry and commerce changed. Factories open within this framework are now functioning in the context of a market economy.

Etymology

The city of Mouxesearch was named after a nearby river. According to an ancient Greek document that dates back to 376 AD, the same river was referred to under the name Μουσεος (Mouseos) as part of a story about the martyrdom of a Roman soldier named Sabbas. Historian Vasile Pârvan believed that this name is a Greek misspelling of the Thracian word Bouzeos (losing a π from the Μπ group, which is pronounced like a Latin B). He suggested that the name comes from the Thracian root Buzzes, with the addition of the -E.U. Suffix, a form of the Greek-Latin suffix -aios.

History

The written history of Bucharest, Romania, begins with the time of Wallachia. It was certified as a market town, and customs point during the reign of Dan II. Sites belonging to Gumelnița and Monteoru cultures suggest human inhabitants before the Christian era. A fortress was constructed in Buzău during the Middle Ages, but we know only little about it. It was mentioned in foreign documents, but its importance declined after the Fall of Constantinople. Nevertheless, the city has a school for nobles from 1385 and an Orthodox episcopal see from 1518.

In the 17th century, this region of Europe was alone in war. The wars began with Michael the Brave’s involvement in the Long Turkish War and ended with an uprising for Wallachia in 1821. Natural disasters (epidemics, earthquakes) also took their toll, leading to destruction and depopulation. However, the inhabitants always returned and rebuilt the city, which led authorities to include the Phoenix bird on the city seal in 1732 as a symbol of rebirth.

The 19th century was a period of cultural and economic development. The Communal Palace, the city’s principal landmark, was built during this time; it was initially created as the city established its industry and became a railway hub in the 1870s. Schools, such as the B. P. Hasdeu high school from 1867, were open and theatre plays were produced starting in 1852. the “Moldavia” theater house was built in 1898 and used throughout the first half of the 20th century as the main concert and theater hall. Artists such as George Enescu, C. I. Nottara, and Nicolae Leonard performed here before it closed in 1949. Ion Luca Caragiale and Constantin Brâncuși have resided in this space for a long time.

Buzău came under German occupation during World War I after mid-December 1916, and many of its inhabitants had to flee. The city began to develop again after the war. The interbellum brought about the first-ever sports matches- association football and boxing- as well as “Metalurgica,” a factory that was soon to be taken over by the communists and remains today a joint project.

Geography

The city is centrally located in the county, 100 km from Bucharest and in the southeast of Romania, with an area of 81.3 square kilometers. It is located at the most outer point of the Subcarpathian foothills and has three central historical provinces: Wallachia, Transylvania, and Moldavia. It is on the right side of the Buzău River in Romania, which forms its northern boundary. The city’s shape is oblong, so it is longer along the river and shorter across. The altitude varies as well- for example, in the northeast near the foothills, it reaches 101 meters, but on the side next to that river, it only goes up to 88 meters. The average altitude of 95 meters is pretty much typical, though. This means that the city of Buzău is flat, with a height difference across 4 km, being kept to about 10 meters.

Waterways

The Buzău River is the northern limit of the city. This river has created an underground basin that it permanently fuels with water. These underground waters are the primary source of drinking water, and their excess overflows to a marshy wetland south of the city, in neighboring communes Costești, Stâlpu, and Țintești. It eventually forms the Călmăț.

Climate

Annual rainfall around the Buzău River region is circa 500 mm. It snowed most in winter, with a total snow cover of 30 cm. Buzău river’s flow fluctuates and sometimes peaks in the spring when it collects melted snow from nearby mountains. The original city was built away from its valley due to the river. That’s why a flood never floods the city. Even with the major floods of 2005, the water in the city proper was never at risk as it stayed well below high-level markers. However, both bridges across it located in the city and a dam just north-west of Buzau were heavily damaged by water. The authorities acknowledge that flooding in some areas is a real threat, but they do not seem to be processing the DN2 belt road. The belt road is next to a river, and floods are common during rainy seasons.

Demographics

According to the latest census, the city has 115,494 inhabitants. Of these, 88% are Romanian-speaking people, with a small minority of Roma people (4.73%). Ethnicity is unknown for most of the population, and most inhabitants follow Orthodox Christianity (91.98%). Religious affiliation is unknown for 6.75% of the population.

Economy

Romet is Buzău’s biggest company, manufacturing products for the water and gas pipe and water filter industries. Thanks to Aquator, our success in the 1990s allowed us to acquire the Metalurgica factory in 1999.

Programs supervised by the World Bank privatized other Buzău-based companies. The company Apcarom SA, the only Romanian producer of railway equipment, became the “hobby” of Austrian VAE in 2008 with a capital worth 7.38 million lei. Ductile S.A. was privatized in 1999 and split later on by the company’s new majority shareholder, FRO Spa, who only kept the equipment for making electrodes and welding equipment, selling off all the other facilities. Initially established in 1921 as the steel wire, welded metal net, concrete, and iron works, Ductile Steel S.A. became an Italian company when Sidersipe acquired it in 1995. The iron powder works were incorporated into this company as well. In 2007, FRO Spa sold Ductil S.A. to the Russian company Mechel for 90 million euros, and Zahărul S.A., the town’s sugar producer, was acquired by Agrana România. This Austrian-based company owned other sugar factories in Rome and a starch factory in the city.

Transport

  • Rail – Buzău is a transportation hub for Romanian Railways, connecting Bucharest, Focșani, Ploiești, and Galați. The city’s railway station opened in 1872, and the Bucharest-Galați railway line opened simultaneously.
  • Road – National road DN2, which is part of the European route E85, goes through Buzău. It connects the city to Bucharest and other important towns in Western Moldavia.
  • Air – Buzău has no civil airport. The only available transport infrastructures are the military airport and heliport. These are used by emergency sanitary flights but have been depreciating year-by-year and not meeting their intended criteria.
  • Public transportation – 10 bus lines connect the town center to neighboring industrial areas (including Buzău), the railway station, and residential districts.
