The municipality has a total land area of 1,750.33 km2 (675.81 sq mi), making it the largest in Spain. As of 2014, it had a population of around 96,000. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the medieval walled city is one of the most famous in the world.

Old Town (Parte Antigua) still has its ancient walls; this part of town is well known for its many stork nests. There is no sign of modernity on the walls, which explains why several television shows and films have been filmed there. In Cáceres, there is the University of Extremadura, as well as two astronomical observatories. The city also serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Coria-Cáceres.
As a result of the city’s blend of Roman, Moorish, Northern Gothic, and Italian Renaissance architecture, Cáceres was declared a World Heritage City by UNESCO in 1986. The Torre del Bujaco, one of 30 towers dating back to the Islamic era, is the most famous tower in Cáceres.
Cáceres’ origins can be traced back to prehistoric times, as the paintings in the Cueva de Maltravieso (Cave of Maltravieso) demonstrate. There are hundreds of paintings in the cave, including the world’s oldest cave painting, a red hand stencil over 67,000 years old. It is believed to have been made by Neanderthals 20,000 years before Homo sapiens arrived in Europe. In Spain, visitors can see remains from medieval times, Roman occupation, Moorish occupation, and the Golden Age of Jewish culture. The historical quarter, the Jewish quarter, the modern center, and the city’s outskirts are the four main areas to explore in Cáceres.
During the Late Paleolithic era, the first evidence of human activity in Cáceres dates back to 25,000 BC. During the Roman occupation, Cáceres became a strategic city and remained in the town, suggesting it was a thriving center as early as 25 B.C. The city was founded as Castra Caecilia by Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius around 25,000 BC. Rome’s first city walls from the 3rd and 4th centuries, including the Arco del Cristo gateway, are still visible today.
