Spain’s Andalucia region contains the ancient port city of Cadiz. A significant trading and exploration port in the 16th century, the port was home to the Spanish Navy. Torre Tavira, the iconic watchtower used for spotting ships, is one of over 100 watchtowers in this city. An 18th-century domed cathedral with baroque and neoclassical elements dominates the waterfront.
Phoenician leaves are few, but numismatic inscriptions record that the Phoenician called it Gadir (Phoenician, ʾgdr), meaning “The Wall,” “The Compound,” or (by metonymy) “The Stronghold .”Berber languages borrowed this word, which became the name Agadir (Tamazight: “wall”; Shilha: “fortified granary”), common in North African places. A similar etymology can also be found in the Moroccan city of Agadir. All subsequent names have derived from this name, which the Carthaginians used. At ancient sites such as Motya, Greek cotton represents a fortified basin of the Carthaginian type.
Cadiz was founded around 1104 BC by Phoenicians from Tyre as Gadir or Agadir. It is often considered to be the most ancient city in Western Europe. It was during the 7th century B.C. that the Phoenicians established a port. There was the beginning of the expeditions of Himilco and Hanno around Western Africa and Spain. Tartessos, a city-state near the mouth of the Guadalquivir River whose exact location is unknown, traded with the Phoenician settlement.
On the south end of its island, the city had a temple dedicated to the Phoenician god Melqart, who was conflated with Hercules by the Greeks and Romans as Tyrian Hercules and Hercules Gaditanus. It was renowned for its wealth and had an oracle. After slaying Geryon, a monster with three heads and torsos joined to a single pair of legs, Hercules was sometimes credited with founding Gadeira. In the 1st century, the “Heracleum” (i.e., Melqart’s temple) was still standing near Gadeira (a tumulus associated with Geryon’s final resting place.) Based on this source, some historians believe that the columns of this temple were the origin of the “pillars of Hercules” myth.
Following the First Punic War, Hamilcar Barca’s Iberian campaign brought the city under Carthage’s sway. Cadiz served as a depot for Hannibal’s conquest of southern Iberia, and he sacrificed to Hercules/Melqart there before crossing the Alps to invade Italy in 218 BC. 206 BC marked the end of the city’s Roman occupation under Scipio Africanus. Known as Gades, the town flourished as a port and naval base during the Roman Empire. Julius Caesar saw a statue of Alexander the Great in Gades when he was a quaestor (junior senator) and was saddened to think that he, though the same age, had achieved nothing noteworthy.
Cadiz enjoys a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csa) with mild winters and warm to hot summers. Because the city is located on a peninsula, it is influenced by the maritime environment. Cádiz has one of the warmest winters in European places. Cádiz has more than 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, making it one of the sunniest cities in the world. Even though summer nights are tropical, daytime temperatures are relatively subdued compared to nearby inland areas like Jerez and the scorching far inland areas in Andalucia. During the winter, the average sea temperature is 16°C (61°F), and in the summer, it is 22°C (72°F). There hasn’t been any snowfall since 1935, at least.
In the 2021 census, Cádiz had 114,244 inhabitants (the third-most-populous city in the province after Jerez de la Frontera with 212,830 residents and Algeciras with 122,982). Only one of Spain’s capital cities doesn’t rank as the most populous or second-most populous in its province. The city of Cadiz is the fifty-seventh-largest in Spain. This city has steadily lost population over the past few years; it is the only municipality in the Bay of Cadiz (composed of the cities of Cádiz, Chiclana, El Puerto de Santa Maria, Puerto Real, and San Fernando) to do so. After losing over 10,000 residents between 2011 and 2021, Cádiz may become the fourth or fifth city in the province. Over 14,000 residents left the city between 1995 and 2006, a 9% decrease.
Cadiz is connected to the European route E5, which links it to Sevilla, Cordoba, and Madrid in the north and Algeciras in the south. The E15 follows the Spanish Mediterranean coast northbound.
The city is served by Jerez Airport, situated approximately 40 kilometers north of the center. In addition to regular domestic flights to Madrid and Barcelona, the airport also offers charter flights to the UK, Germany, and other European destinations. The Cercanas Cádiz line C1 takes 1 hour to connect the airport to the central train station in Cádiz.
The railway station in Cadiz is located just outside the old town. Besides regional services, it also offers national ones. A high-speed rail connection between Madrid and Seville was completed in 2015 after 14 years of construction, enabling Alvia trains to reach the city. Along the line to Jerez and Seville, local services provide access to the outskirts and regional destinations.
Ferries run to the Canary Islands from the port opposite the train station twice a week (2–3 days travel time), and seasonal cruise ships dock here.
Occupying a tiny peninsula on the south coast of Spain, Cádiz is a beautiful old city that is well worth a visit. The old town is on the tip of the peninsula and is buzzing with beautiful plazas that are constantly full of life.
Three towns in the province of Cádiz produce fortified wine, known as the Sherry Triangle.
