The port city of Cartagena is located in southeast Spain in the Murcia region. It boomed during the Roman era after being founded by the Carthaginians in 220 BC. This area has many Roman ruins, including a 1st-century B.C. theater and a villa decorated with mosaics and murals, Casa de la Fortuna. An interpretation center for the Punic Wall (Punic Wall) displays remains of a 3rd-century B.C. defense system.
Cartagena is located in the Campo de Cartagena in the southeastern region of Spain. There are four pre-coastal mountain ranges bordering the Cartagena region to the north and Northwest (Carrascoy, El Puerto, Los Villares, Columbares, and Escalona) and at the south and southwest by coastal mountain ranges (El Algarrobo, La Muela, Pelayo, Gorda, La Fausilla, and Minera, with its last spurs at Cape Palos.).
Metamorphic rocks (slate, marble) and sedimentary rocks (limestone) dominate the geology. Calcic aerosols are the most common type of soil. The municipality also contains leptosol, which forms the Mediterranean coast, and petrocalcic aerosol.
The climate in Cartagena is hot and semi-arid. The weather is moderated by its proximity to the sea, and precipitation does not exceed 300 mm (12 inches) per year. Around 18.8 °C (66 °F) is the average annual temperature. Temperatures average 11.9 °C (53 °F) in January, the coldest month, and August, the warmest month, averages 26.5 degrees Celsius (80 degrees Fahrenheit). Several factors contribute to the region’s climate, including the wind.
The region around Cartagena city, despite centuries of intensive mining, tourism, and industrial exploitation, has an extraordinary natural wealth and biodiversity, including many endemic botanical species. There are different levels of legal protection in its area.
Homo genus individuals were mentioned in the Cueva Victoria cave 1,300,000 years ago. Cartagena’s southeastern quarter is home to this cave.
The Cave of Los Aviones contains remains of Neanderthals of the Mousterian culture. Close to Cartagena, this place can be found. In the cave Cueva Bermeja, located in the southwestern quarter of the municipality, there were also Neanderthal remains belonging to the Mousterian culture.
Human remains from the Upper Paleolithic were discovered in the southeast corner of the municipality, and human activity also occurred in the west of the city during that time. In particular, the Cueva del Caballo and Cueva Bermeja caves provide evidence of this.
It was inhabited again during the Mesolithic period at the southeast end of Cartagena. In addition to the Cueva de Los Pájaros, the Cueva de Los Mejillones is another essential cave. Several Neolithic components were found, such as ceramic remains.
Cartagena’s southeast was once again populated in the Neolithic period, and there was also an inhabited area in the south of Alumbres at that time. A characteristic Neolithic hamlet was discovered at the archaeological site on Cerro del Gorguel hill.
It was due to the lack of rainfall and the absence of water beds that this municipality needed more human presence and structures during the Neolithic period. There was a similar situation during the Bronze Age.
During the Bronze Age, the Argaric civilization inhabited Murcia and Almera in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula. Despite this, they did not significantly occupy this municipality, had few structures, and were of little significance, and Northwest was where they lived.
The 2011 Municipal Census lists Cartagena as having 218,210 inhabitants, placing it 24th in Spain in terms of population (and 6th among non-capitals). The urban area is home to 182,021 people, while satellite quarters are home to 39,840. Following the municipality’s official population data, 14.73 percent of its residents were foreign-born.
Energy-related activities comprise the majority of the municipality’s economic activities. Valle de Escombreras is where they are located. This valley is situated in Escombreras, south of the city and 5–10 kilometers from the locality’s west end. It is located in a district called Escombreras. A noteworthy activity in Cartagena is agriculture, which accounted for 37.9% of the territory in 2017. Melon, lettuce, potatoes, lemons, and almonds are the most commonly grown products. In 2012, 52.77% of the agreements occurred in this sector, and 42.83% of the workers were hired as laborers. While it is less critical than it was centuries ago, Shipbuilding still has a moderate influence. Cartagena, the municipality’s central locality, is the location for this activity. In the Northwest of the country, plastic is also produced. Tourism and hotels have seen a rise in the tertiary sector in recent decades. 14,12% of agreements were aimed at servers in the municipality in 2012.
Cartagena is part of Health area II (Cartagena) in the Region of Murcia. The municipality contains 13 subareas in this area, and the region includes two hospitals in two towns. There are also 30 clinics (primary care health centers with fewer functions than health centers) and 12 in Cartagena.
There are two autopistas serving Cartagena, one connecting it to towns and cities further up the Mediterranean coast and the other linking it to Murcia. Cartagena railway station was opened in 1903 after the Chinchilla-Cartagena railway reached it in 1863. This will be the future terminus of the Madrid-Levante high-speed rail line. Commuters use the narrow-gauge Cartagena-Los Nietos Line between Cartagena and La Union and Los Nietos to the east.
Cartagena’s urban bus service also provides bus facilities. Localities within the municipalities and adjacent municipalities, such as La Union and Torre-Pacheco, are served by lines.
The main town has nine early childhood and primary education centers and five secondary schools. In addition, four concertos (semi-private or quasi-private) centers on the territory offer both primary and secondary education. Ten secondary education centers and 38 primary education centers are located in the other districts. El Plan, in the eastern half of Cartagena’s western half, is home to a unique education center.
Most noticeable in sports is the Football Club Cartagena (FC Cartagena), which plays in Segunda División, the second level of the Spanish football league system. Futsal Cartagena is another sports team that plays in the Second Division most of the time, and UCAM Cartagena Table Tennis is a successful team.
Basketball, played by Club Basket Cartagena; handball, which has C.A.B. Cartagena as its most outstanding team; and badminton, which UPCT Badminton Cartagena plays, is also played in the municipality.
Is it worth visiting Cartagena, Spain? There is no doubt in my mind that the answer to that question is yes. Cartagena, Spain, offers much to do, from history to feasts. The streets are lined with marble, and the shopping is excellent.
Since the arrival of the Spanish Bourbons in the 18th century, Cartagena has been the capital of the Spanish Navy’s Maritime Department of the Mediterranean. Together with Ferrol in the north, it was one of Spain’s most important naval ports in the 16th century.
