Caserta Overview
There is a city in southern Italy called Caserta. Known for its fountain-filled gardens, the Caserta Royal Palace has a baroque style. A silk factory and workers’ houses are part of the Monumental Complex Belvedere San Leucio, located in the north. An 18th-century structure, the Carolino Aqueduct, is located east. In Santa Maria Capua Vetere, west of the ruins of the Anfiteatro Campano, where gladiator fights once occurred, are the ruins of the Anfiteatro Campano.
History
Once inhabited by Osco-Samnite tribes, the modern city of Caserta was built around a defensive tower built by Pando, Prince of Capua, during Lombard times. The original town was destroyed by Pando around 863. It was once the seat of the counts of Caserta and a royal residence, and it is now part of the Palazzo della Prefettura. The population moved from Casertavecchia (former bishopric seat) to the current site in the sixteenth century. The Roman town of Casertavecchia was built on the site of Casa Irta, which meant “home village above,” and became known as “Caserta.”.
Due to enormous debts, the Acquaviva family sold the city and its surroundings to the royal family. Caserta was considered more defensible as an inland city than the previous palace facing the Bay of Naples, so the royal family chose Caserta for their new court.
Supreme Allied Commander was seated in the royal palace at the end of World War II. In 1945, Allied war trials were held; Anton Dostler, a German general, was executed nearby in Aversa.
An evangelical, charismatic-Pentecostal Protestant church pastor, Giovanni Traettino, and Pope Francis visited Caserta on Monday, 28 June 2014. While the fascist regime in Italy was in power, the Pope apologized for the complicity of some Catholics in persecuting Protestant Pentecostals.

Caserta is located 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Naples. In addition to Capua, Casagiove, Casapulla, Castel Morrone, Curti, Limatola (B.N.), Maddaloni, Marcianise, Recale, San Felice a Cancello, San Marco Evangelista, San Nicola la Strada, San Prisco, Sant’Agata de’ Goti (B.N.), Santa Maria Capua Vetere, and Valle di Maddaloni, the municipality also borders with the cities listed below.
