Catanzaro Overview
Catanzaro, a comune in Calabria and the capital of its province, is known as the “City of the Two Seas.” It has 86,183 inhabitants, making it the second-largest city in the region behind Reggio Calabria. More than 200 years ago, the archbishop’s seat was the capital of Calabria Ultra.
Geography
Catanzaro is located in the Ionian Sea, overlooking the Gulf of Squillace. At an elevation of 600 meters (2,000 feet), the district of Catanzaro stretches from the sea to the mountains. The historic center has approximately 300 meters (980 feet) above sea level.
Climate
Catanzaro’s climate can be described as Mediterranean, temperate, and windy during spring and autumn.
Using the 1961–90 average temperature as a reference, January was the coldest month, with an average temperature of 8.9°C (48°F). In August, the temperature reaches 24.5°C (76°F).
History
Catanzaro is believed to be the result of an ancient Greek colony, already present, which became Scolacium, built on the ruins of the ancient city of Trischines. In other sources, Catanzaro’s development was attributed to various settlements situated in the area of Catanzaro, Marina, Tiriolo (formerly Teure), Santa Maria di Catanzaro, and the hill Trivonà (Trischines, along the Corach valley, which formed the old “Land of Feaco”). Legend has it that the ancient Ulysses Skilletion was created at the mouth of the river.
A Greek necropolis and ancient Roman settlement were discovered in the Germaneto district along the valley of Corach. In the Iron Ages, the municipality thrived with the populations of “Vitulo,” so-named because they worshipped a statue of the calf, which the Greeks renamed “Italoi” (worshipers of the calf), and was ruled by the famous Italian king, brother of Dardanus and ancestor to the Trojans. This figure is responsible for the name of Italy.
Catanzaro was named after two Byzantine generals, Cattaro and Zaro, who led the coastal city of Magna Graecia Skilletion (today Santa Maria di Catanzaro) first on Zarapotamo (today Santa Maria di Catanzaro), and later on Trivonà, a military fortress, which corresponded to the Roman Scolacium (near Catanzaro’s Marina).

Catanzaro’s economy is mainly based on tertiary education and services. In most industries, medium- and small-sized companies operate in local markets.

Catanzaro is connected to the A2 by the SS106 Jonica (“Ionian”) state road.
A line with three stations runs through the city center. A metropolitan service (with c. 1,600,000 passengers per year and 20 trains) is provided by Ferrovie della Calabria, with 11 railway stations in the city and others in 12 surrounding communities. AMC (Azienda per la Mobilità Catanzaro) operates 49 bus lines for the rest of the public transportation system. There are two main railway stations in Catanzaro: Catanzaro Lido and Catanzaro.

Catanzaro’s U.S. Catanzaro 1929 represents the city in association football, and Stadio Nicola Ceravolo is where they play their home matches.
