Celje Overview

Celje is the fourth most populous city in Slovenia. Located in the traditional Slovenian region of Styria, Celje serves as the administrative center for its City Municipality.

Celje lies in the lower Savinja Valley at the confluence of the Savinja, Hudinja, Monica, and Voglajna rivers and the intersection of roads connecting Ljubljana, Maribor, Velenje, and the Central Sava Valley. Approximately 238 meters (781 feet) are above mean sea level.

Name

Celje was known as Celeia in Roman times. Several early references to the name appear during or after Slavic settlement, including Cylia in 452, ecclesiae Celejanae in 579, Zellia in 824, Cilia in 1310, Cilli in 1311, and Celie in 1575. Originally derived from Vulgar Latin Celeae, Celje evolved into modern Slovene Celje. Although the name is pre-Roman, there is no clear etymology. Local Slovene dialects call Celje Cjele or Cele. In German, it is called Cilli, while in Italian, it is called Celie.

Early history

Celje was the first settlement in the area during the Hallstatt period. Celts coined Noric money in the region, according to Ancient Greek historians and Celtic historians.

Civitas Celeia was the name given to the area when it was incorporated into the Roman Empire in 15 B.C. During the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius (41-54), it received municipal rights under the name municipium Claudia Celeia. In addition to multi-story marble palaces, vast squares, and streets, records reveal that the town was rich and densely populated. The city was called Troia secunda, the second Troy, or the small Troy. From Aquileia (San. Oglej) to Pannonia, a Roman road passed through Celeia. It soon became a flourishing Roman colony, with many significant buildings being constructed, including the temple of Mars. As a result of this incorporation, Celeia became a part of Aquileia. Constantine I (272-337), Roman Emperor.

In the Early Middle Ages, the city was rebuilt after Slavic tribes had razed it during the Migration period. In Wolfhold von Admont’s Chronicle, written between 1122 and 1137, Celje is first mentioned under the name Kylie. As the seat of the Counts of Celje, the town acquired market-town status in the first half of the 14th century and town privileges on 11 April 1451 from Count Frederick II.

Celje was inherited by the Habsburgs of Austria in 1456 and administered by the Duchy of Styria after the Counts of Celje died out. A defensive moat and city walls were built in 1473. During the massive Slovene peasant revolt of 1515, the town defended itself against Turks and peasants who took Old Castle.

Many local nobles converted to Protestantism during the Protestant Reformation, but the region was converted back to Roman Catholicism during the Counter-Reformation. A part of the Austrian Empire, Celje became part of the Habsburgs’ empire during the Napoleonic Wars. During the Austro-Prussian War in 1867, Austria-Hungary defeated Austria and incorporated the town.

Sights

Grayfriars’ monastery, founded in 1241, and the 16th-century palace are among the town’s tourist attractions.

With its beautiful Gothic chapel, the parish church from the 14th century is an exciting example of medieval architecture. In 1808, the monastery closed the so-called German church, which was built in Romanesque style. Here you can find the throne of the Cilli counts and the tombs of several family members.

Climate

Celje’s summers are warm, the winters are cold and snowy, and it is partly cloudy throughout the year. Temperatures typically range from 24°F to 81°F throughout the year, rarely falling below 11°F or rising above 91°F. For warm-weather activities, Celje is best visited between mid-June and early September.

Population

37,872 (2020)

Symbols

Celje’s coat of arms is based on the Counts of Celje’s coat of arms.

When Slovenia, Croatia, and Serbia formed the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia) after World War I in 1918, the coat of arms of Celje was selected. Similarly, the Slovenian national components were incorporated into the 1991 national coat of arms.

15 Best Things to Do in Celje (Slovenia)

  1. Celje Castle

    – During the 14th and 15th centuries, Celje Castle was the seat of power for the Counts of Celje, the most powerful family in Slovenia. At the time, the hilltop enclosure was Slovenia’s largest fortification, keeping an entire town within its outer ward.
  2. The Old Landgraviate Building

    – The Old Landgraviate Building dates back to the turn of the 17th century and overlooks Celje’s southern walls. In addition to the long arcade and first-floor gallery on the facade, there is the Celje Ceiling, painted during the Renaissance-Baroque era.
  3. Prince’s Mansion

    – Another residence for the Counts of Celje, this property has been designated a national monument. During the rule of Empress Maria Theresa in the 1700s, this palace served many different purposes after their line died out in 1456.
  4. Museum of Recent History

    – Located across Celje, this museum documents contemporary life in the city, including a former Minorite monastery used by the Nazis and Josip Pelkan’s photography studio. This former town hall is Neoclassical in style and serves as the headquarters.
  5. Josip Pelikan’s Skylight Photo Studio

    – The Museum of Recent History manages the building on Razlagova Street, which is listed as a Slovene cultural monument. One of the few remaining skylight studios in Europe can be found upstairs, while the darkroom and retouching room downstairs are precise as they were when Pelikan passed away.
  6. Celje Cathedral

    – Originally constructed in the 14th century, the cathedral has undergone numerous alterations. Neo-Gothic construction was completed in 1858 when the church was given its current style.
  7. City Walls

    – By the Old Landgraviate Building, the last remnants of Celje’s defensive system can still be seen. In 1450, these were started but would only be completed in 1473. Despite standing for 300 years, they were sold off in an auction by the end of the 18th century because they were no longer needed.
  8. Sights around Celje

    – Some of the streets around the City Hall are pedestrianized, making the center of Celje compact and walkable. With its regal stucco-clad townhouses and municipal buildings, the city has that late-19th-century Historicist design.
  9. Celje Adventure Park

    – This attraction opened in 2014 if you’re looking for something fun for kids to do. A wooded hillside has an adventure course with planks, nets, climbing walls, zip lines, and rope bridges, all elevated above the forest floor and attached to tree trunks.
  10. Šmartinsko Jezero

    – About five kilometers upstream from Celje, the Koprivnica River was dammed in 1970, creating a large reservoir. For those who wish to explore the idyllic countryside near the city, the lake is convenient and accessible.
  11. Celje Marketplace

    – The city’s market, located north of the Old Town, was redesigned in 2009 to international acclaim. This market will be built with a steel pavilion with an irregular roof to allow as much natural light as possible.
  12. Artistic Quarter

    – The local government has nurtured Celje’s contemporary art scene. A new art quarter was built in the old, empty buildings on Na Okopih and Gosposka Streets at the beginning of the 2000s.
  13. Celje Gallery of Contemporary Art

    – Located in the Prince’s Mansion complex, the Gallery of Contemporary Art keeps the arty theme going. Exhibitions at these gallery address topics as diverse as postfeminist theory, wartime reminiscence, and death in contemporary society.
  14. Celje

    – Podčetrtek Heritage Train – Celje had the first railway line in Slovenia, built in 1846 and running to Grobelno, around 15 kilometers southeast of the city. On Saturdays in summer, you can still ride that historic track on a steam train to Podetrtek, near the Croatian border.
  15. Traditional Food

    – Celje’s apples are a point of pride in autumn and are never treated with insecticides or preservatives.
