Cesena Overview
In the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, Cesena is a city and comune near the Apennine Mountains, about 15 kilometers from the Adriatic Sea and served by the Autostrada A14. Ninety-seven thousand one hundred thirty-seven people are living in the city.
History
The town of Cesena was originally an Etruscan or Umbrian town. The Romans took control of the city in the 3rd century B.C. after it briefly fell under the Gaulish rule. During the wars between Gaius Marius and Sulla, it was a garrison town of strategic importance. According to Pliny, among the best wines in the world are those of Cesena.
Cesena lay on the border shared by the Ravenna Exarchate and the Lombards. In 754, its Frankish conqueror presented it to the Papacy (Donation of Pepin). It was passed between the popes and the archbishops of Ravenna and briefly became a communal republic (1183-1198). In those days, popes and Holy Roman Emperors contested it fiercely. In 1357, the Papal troops led by Cardinal Gil de Albornoz crushed the Forlivese Ordelaffi after a long siege heroically endured by Cia degli Ordelaffi, wife of the Lord of Forl.
As a result of the War of the Eight Saints, the little comune revolted again in 1377. Breton soldiers retook it under the command of Robert, Cardinal of Geneva (later antipope Clement VII), under the management of Giovanni Acuto (the English condottiere John Hawkwood). Approximately 2,500 to 5,000 civilians were savagely murdered by the latter, acting as the legate of Pope Gregory XI. This was considered an atrocity by the laws of war at the time, earning the name “Cesena Bloodbath” and the title “Butcher of Cesena” to the cardinal. After the death of the new pope Urban VI, what remained of Cesena was assigned to Galeotto I Malatesta.
During 1379-1465, the city flourished under the Malatesta, who rebuilt the castle (called Rocca Malatestiana) above the city. In 1429, Malatesta Novello built the Malatestiana Library near the court, a fine example of Renaissance literature.
Cesena returned to the Papal States after Novello’s death (1465), but was once again seized by Cesare Borgia in 1500. The city was elevated as the capital of his powerful but short-lived duchy.

Transport
The Bologna-Ancona railway passes through Cesena’s railway station, which opened in 1861. To the northeast of the city center, it is located on Piazza Giorgio Sanguinetti.

Summers in Cesena are warm, humid, and mostly clear, while winters are freezing and partly cloudy. Temperatures vary throughout the year from 32°F to 85°F, rarely falling below 24°F or rising above 92°F. Late June to late August is the best time to visit Cesena for hot-weather activities.
