In southwestern Spain, Chiclana de la Frontera is a town and municipality in the province of Cádiz, Andalucía, near the Gulf of Cádiz. It belongs to the association of cities of the Bay of Cádiz (Bahía de Cádiz), the provincial capital of Cádiz, Jerez de la Frontera, San Fernando, El Puerto de Santa María, Puerto Real, and Rota, forming the third largest metropolitan area in Andalusia, after Seville and Malaga, and the twelfth largest in Spain. To the north are the San Fernando and Puerto Real municipalities, located 20 kilometers (12 miles) southeast of Cádiz. There were 11,677 inhabitants in 1877; 81,473 in 2012. It has a surface area of 203 square kilometers (78 square miles) and a population density of 401 people per square kilometer. The average elevation is 11 meters (36 feet) above sea level. In addition to beaches such as the 6 kilometers (3.7 mi) long Playa de la Barrosa, hotels, and golf courses in Novo Sancti Petri, the municipality relies heavily on modern industry, especially salt processing. There are more hotel rooms in Cádiz Province and Costa de la Luz than elsewhere. Every Saturday, Chiclana Información, the town’s newspaper, is distributed.
There has been human activity in the area since Paleolithic times. Several Neolithic villages have been discovered in the area, including La Mesa. The Phoenicians settled near the town in the first Century, especially on the small island of Islote de Sancti Petri, where they built a temple dedicated to their god, Melqart. Hercules was dedicated to the temple by the Romans when they arrived. In 1905, a marble statue of a Roman emperor deified during the 2nd Century was found in the Sancti Petri waters. Cádiz Museum exhibits Phoenician, Carthaginian, and Roman remains unearthed in Chiclana, an ancient Phoenician stronghold.
The Christians led by Alonso Pérez de Guzmán (1256–1309) entered the town in 1303 after the moors who had settled in Southern Spain since the 8th Century deserted it. Guzman claimed these territories for Castille, and his possessions in Southern Spain eventually led to the creation of Medina-Sidonia. On 5 March 1811, the Anglo-Spanish army defeated the French at the Battle of Barrosa, 5 miles (8.0 km) south of Chiclana. Chiclana was the site of the Battle of Chiclana, which occurred during the Spanish War of Independence between the French and an Anglo-Spanish alliance. Municipal authorities, Le Secretariat del Ayuntamiento de Chiclana de la Frontera, invited tenders for an electric lighting concession in 1900. During the early 20th Century, seasonal Algarvian migration brought workers to Chiclana’s cereal fields. As a result of Manuel de Falla’s search for inspiration, Sancti Petri was visited in 1930 by the composer.
Chiclana de la Frontera is located on the Costa de la Luz on the southern coast of Spain, in the province of Cádiz on the western coast. Puerto Real borders the municipality to the north, San Fernando to the north-northwest, and Conil de la Frontera to the south-southeast. The town itself is located about 20 kilometers (12 mi) from the city of Cádiz, lies to the northwest and about 95 kilometers (59 mi) west of Algeciras by the A-390 road through the mainland and passes through Medina-Sidonia, which lies about 24 kilometers (15 mi) east of the town of Chiclana. Among the villages in the municipality are La Coquina, Los Gallos Cerromolinos, Pinar de los Guisos, Llano de las Maravillas, Las Vegas, La Barrosa, Novo Sancti Petri, Melilla, Campano, El Olivar, Torre del Puerco, El Colorado, Barrio Nuevo, Hozanejos and Pago del Humo and Las Vegas, although many of the villages are linked.
The climate of Chiclana, like that of the Bay of Cádiz, is typical of the southern Atlantic coast of Spain. There are humid conditions with an average temperature of 19 °C (66 °F), approaching 30 °C (86 °F) in August, and minimum temperatures of 2 °C (36 °F) in January. Approximately 3,000 hours of sunshine are recorded in the town each year. At times, the municipality can experience heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions that can cause flooding, with December being the wettest month and the summer months being the driest. During the day, the mean wind speed is between 10 and 15 kilometers per hour (6 and 9 mph). During the summer, late autumn, and spring, the strongest winds usually rise from the east or southwest. Several pine, olive, oak, and chaparral trees grow in the municipality, and the Parque Forestal Municipal “Pinar del Hierro y de la Espartosa”; hikers and mountain bikers enjoy this park.
Fontanar was an amphora-producing center in Chiclana de la Frontera that manufactured fish sauce containers dating back to the Augustan era. In the 19th Century, Chiclana produced linen, earthenware, and brandy, and tourists visited the mineral baths. The municipality’s economy is largely based on modern industry, especially salt processing and tourism. It is known for its beaches, such as the 6 km long, sandy Playa de la Barrosa, hotels, and golf courses in Novo Sancti Petri. The Rough Guide to Andalucía describes Novo Sancti Petri as “a complex of hundreds of identical avenues lined with featureless tile-roofed dwellings, ugly lamp standards, over-manicured gardens, and a golf course designed by Severiano Ballesteros.” In Cádiz and the Costa de la Luz, the municipality has the most extensive hotel beds and over 20 luxury hotels with four or five stars. Among the notable golf courses are the 36-hole Club de Golf Novo Sancti Petri, the 18-hole Club de Golf Melia Sancti Petri, the 9-hole Club de Golf Campano, and European Golfes Academy, Practeegolf Golf School, and Lomas de Sancti Golf Course. Restaurants, bars, and markets are also available on Playa de la Barrosa, which stretches from Sancti Petri to Cape Trafalgar. Located around the town hall square, Chiclana has a busy market where fruits and vegetables are sold and fish and meat stalls; retailers from rural areas sell wild asparagus, snails, and herbs. The Tuesday market is held by the blue bridge over the Iro River. On the Avenue of Discoveries, the town is known not only for its salt processing but also for its furniture manufacturing.
There are 24 kilometers between the town and the capital along the Bay of Cadiz. The area is part of the Andalucia wine route and has high-quality beaches, so it is worth visiting.
