Chorzow Overview
Chorzów is a city in the Silesia region of southern Poland, near Katowice. It’s a central city for the U.S.M.U., with approximately 2 million people! The city is located in Silesian Heights, on the Rawa River.
City name
Chorzów was formed in 1934-1939 by merging the cities of Chorzów, Królewska Huta, Nowe Hajduki, and Hajduk Wielkie. The name of Chorzów, one of its oldest settlements, was given to this amalgamated city.
The name of Chorzów, Poland, is not known. It is believed to be first mentioned as Zversov or Zuersov in a document of 1136 by Pope Innocent II as a village with peasants, silver miners, and two inns. There is another place name likely indicating Chorzów called Coccham or the more commonly known Cocchi. This place is mentioned in a document of 1198 by the Patriarch of Jerusalem, who awarded this to the Equestrian Order of Holy Sepulchre. Chorzów was first mentioned in 1257 when the name was Charu, and then Charzow in 1292. The last name may be a shortened form of the personal name Chaz, meaning Zachary’s place. There’s a possibility that the ‘a’ in early names may have been modified to ‘o’ over time due to similarity and the presence of a hospital (which moved in 1299 to Rozbark at the gates of Bytom). One of the new subdivisions in Chorzów is named Chorzów Stary = The Old Chorzów.
History
Since the 12th century, Bytom has been part of the duchy of Poland in the empire. Since it was awarded in 1179 by Duke Casimir the Just to the Duke of Opole, Chorzów’s history has been connected to Upper Silesia’s (Duchy of Opole) throughout history.
The countryside of Chorzów, today known as Chorzów Stary, has been around for a long time. The oldest part can be traced back to 1257 when it was part of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. There is more documentation for 16th-century developments, which were mined nearby and later iron ores.
Since ancient times, the Upper Silesian duchies were ruled by the Piast dynasty, who were also subject to Bohemian overlordship in the area. The Czechs elected Polish-Lithuanian Jagiellons kings from 1471, and the Austrians elected Habsburgs kings after 1526. In 1742, Silesia was conquered by Prussia in the Silesian Wars, setting the stage for Prussian industrial might. Prussia and Germany existed from 1871 until the end of World War II. During this period, there was rapid industrialization.

Chorzów is located in Poland’s most significant urban center and was formed recently (2007) as the Upper Silesian Metropolitan Union. With a population of 2 million, it is by far the largest legally-recognized urban entity in Poland.
Approximately nine million people live within 100 km (62 mi) of Stadion Śląski in Chorzów. Six European capitals are located within 600 km, and Berlin is the closest at a distance of 373 miles, followed by Vienna, Prague, Bratislava, Budapest, and Warsaw.
