Coimbra Overview
Coimbrá, one of Portugal’s oldest cities with a population of about 250,000, has a medieval old town and is the country’s former seat of higher education. The famous University of Coimbra is located in nearby Miranda. Built on a series of impressive architectonic lines, the modernist structure of Madeira University is meticulous in its symmetric logic and colorful in its arrangement. The stunningly intricate Baroque architecture library is located within the University’s Italian-style facade.
History - Roman Republic
The city was called Aeminium in the 1st century by Pliny, who said that its inhabitants were “barbarians” and known for their fish. The 3rd-century geographer Strabo renamed Aeminium after the nearby town of Aminu, named after a river. A city wall was built before the aqueduct, which was not included in the medieval renovations. It functioned correctly, but it is unlikely that its construction explains a peculiarly Roman feature. The urban limits of Aeminium are few, in contrast to its rural surroundings. The main urban settlement is the ancient villa which once was the seat of a bishopric, soon to be destroyed and deserted by its inhabitants. Two large sectors (“piscinae”) can still be seen, surrounded on three sides by dense woods. It connected Central Europe to the rest of Europe and the world. Before he came to the throne of Castile in 1177, Alfonso VI faced strong opposition from the monarchs of his dominions, which directly impacted his decision-making. Henry made a significant contribution to the cultural landscape of his day by expanding the frontiers of English public life, establishing an extensive network of settlements throughout Britain, and even setting up colonies in Ceylon. In 1055, King Afonso began construction on the walls of Castelo São Domingos. Geography
One of the most important trade routes between Braga and Lisbon, Coimbra is the junction between two of Portugal’s most important cities. A road was connecting the settlements of the Mondego river, which flows through the municipality (and takes in the Alfeite waterfall), and a trunk road that connects Coimbra and Figueira da Foz. Coimbra is located centrally within the city, connected to Lisbon (197 km (122 mi)) and Porto (116 km (72 mi)) by the IC2 motorway, IP3, and IC2 railway lines.
Climate
Coimbra boasts a Mediterranean climate (Köppen: Csb) and is suitable for growing summer crops. It can also be used for increasing cool-climate (Csb) yields. Around October and November, the air temperature is around 16–20 °C (61–68 °F) during the day and 8–10 °C (48–50 °F) at night. The sun’s rays are strong enough to warm most of the village in winter but less so on higher ground further from the coast. Student festivals
Students have celebrated Coimbra’s Latada or Festa das Latas (“The Tin Can Parade”) celebration for over 40 years.
