Como Overview
The city of Como is located on the southern shores of Lake Como in northern Italy. A picturesque funicular railway, the Gothic Como Cathedral, and a waterfront promenade are some of the city’s most famous attractions. Como’s silk industry is the subject of the Museo Didattico della Seta, and the Tempio Voltiano museum is dedicated to physicist Alessandro Volta. Other stately villas can be found just north of the palatial Villa Olmo, which has a lakeside garden.
History
A Celtic tribe known as the Orobii inhabited the hills surrounding the current location of Como, at least since the Iron Age. Settlement remnants can still be seen in the wooded hills to the southwest of town.
In the first century B.C., the territory was conquered by the Romans. After Julius Caesar drained the swamp near the southern tip of the lake and laid out the walled city in the typical Roman grid of perpendicular streets, the town center was moved from nearby hills to its current location. The newly founded Novum Comum had the status of a municipium and was named Novum Comum. In September 2018, Culture Minister Alberto Bonisoli announced the discovery of several hundred gold coins in a two-handled soapstone amphora in the basement of the former Cressoni Theater. The coins were struck by emperors Honorius, Valentinian III, Leo I the Thracian, Antonio, and Libius Severus in 474 AD.
It became a center of commercial exchange after surrendering to invading Franks, led by Charlemagne, in 774.
During the decade-long war between Como and Milan in 1127, Como lost. When Milan was destroyed in 1162, the Comanche avenged their defeat with the help of Frederick Barbarossa. Around the city limits, Frederick promoted the construction of several defensive towers, but only one remains today, the Baradello.
Como’s history followed that of the Duchy of Milan through the French invasion and Spanish dominion until 1714 when the Austrians took over the territory. As a result of the Congress of Vienna, Austrian rule was reinstated in Lombardy in 1815 after Napoleon descended into the region in 1796. Approximately 16,000 people lived in the city by 1848. The town became part of the newly formed Kingdom of Italy under the House of Savoy in 1859 after Giuseppe Garibaldi arrived.

This city lies 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Milan on the southwest arm of Lake Como; its boundaries include Switzerland, the communes of Blevio, Brunate, Capiago Intimiano, Casnate con Bernate, Cernobbio, Grandate, Lipomo, Maslianico, Montano Lucino, San Fermo della Battaglia, Senna Comasco, Tavernerio, and Torno, as well as Chiasso and Vacallo. There are three significant cities nearby: Varese, Lecco, and Lugano.

Climate
Based on Köppen’s climate classification, Como has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa); the winter is not long, but there are occasional periods of frost due to the Siberian Anticyclone; spring and autumn are pleasant and well marked, while summer can be oppressive, hot, and humid. The air is rarely swept clean by the wind; only sudden bursts of fog or thunderstorms do the job.
Government
Como’s government is the City Council (Consiglio Comunale), elected every five years by proportional representation, at the same time as the mayor. City Committees (Giunta Comunale) are executive bodies composed of nine accessories overseeing specific ministries, nominated and presided over by directly elected Mayors (Sindaco). Since June 27, 2022, Como’s mayor has been Alessandro Rapinese, an independent leading the Rapinese Sindaco alliance, unaffiliated with any official party.
Economy
The economy of Como, until the end of the 1980s, was traditionally based on the industry; in particular, the city was world-famous for its silk manufacturers; however, since the mid-1990s, increasing competition from China has led to a significant reduction in profit margins and the closure of many small and mid-sized companies. Due to this, manufacturing is no longer the city’s economic engine, and it has been absorbed into Milan’s metropolitan area, where it primarily provides workers for service industries. Lugano and Mendrisio, two Swiss towns with nearby industrial sites, employ a large number of residents, primarily in manufacturing, health care, and hospitality; due to the higher wages in Switzerland, the commute of 30 km (19 mi) is beneficial. Due to these factors, tourism had become an increasingly important part of local economies since the late 1990s, when restaurants, hotels, and bars gradually replaced small businesses.
Demographics
Como reached its peak population of almost 100,000 in the 1970s, when manufacturing, especially silk production, boomed. After production began to decline, the city’s population decreased by nearly 20,000 people until the start of the 21st century, when immigration from Asia, Eastern Europe, and North Africa caused it to grow by more than six thousand people. Eighty-four thousand three hundred twenty-six people lived in the city on December 31, 2016, of which 12,026 were resident aliens, making up 14.1% of the population.
Cuisine
Polenta is a popular dish in Como, traditionally eaten in winter. Buckwheat flour and corn flour are mixed and cooked together to produce them. The Lake Como region’s restaurants serve Polenta e Misultin (Alosa agone) with meat, game, cheese, and sometimes fish.
European perch filet risotto is a traditional dish of white wine, onion, butter, and wheat. It is made with European perch grown in Lake Como.

- Airports – Malpensa, Milano Linate, and Orio al Serio International Airports offer scheduled flights; Lugano Agno, in Switzerland, offers business class and private jet flights only to Switzerland and Italy.

Como is home to several high schools, the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory of Music, the Aldo Galli Design School, the University of Insubria, and a branch campus of the Politecnico di Milano.
Como has three major hospitals: Ospedale Sant’Anna, Ospedale Valduce, and Clinica Villa Aprica.
Sports
Two-time champions of the FIBA EuroLeague Women, the ASDG Comense 1872 basketball team, and the Calcio Como football team are notable sports clubs. In addition to pedal-boating, fishing, walking, and seaplane rentals, there are numerous recreational activities available to tourists in the area. The Città di Como Challenger also takes place every year in Como, attracting many of the world’s top players who are not participating in the U.S. Open.
