Constanta Overview

Constanta is a city by the Black Sea. It has a long history and is located in the south of Romania. The National History and Archaeology Museum, located near the port, documents this history from over 2000 years ago. The nearby Roman Mosaics complex displays tiled floors dating back to the 4th century A.D. Meanwhile, the Great Mahmudiye Mosque is furnished with a Persian rug and a towering minaret that overlooks the city.

Constanța has a population of 667,860 and is Romania’s fifth most populous city. Constanta Metropolitan Area includes 14 towns within 19 miles of the city and is one of the largest metropolitan areas in Romania.

History

The Romans captured the Limes Scythicus region in 29 B.C. and went as far as the Danube.

The Roman poet Ovid was banished and ultimately died in exile due to a decree of the emperor Augustus. He wrote poems Tristia and Epistulae ex Ponto while he was in exile. They mention his longing for Rome and how inept he felt in Tomis.

There are many inscriptions in Constanta that show that Tomis. Some of these inscriptions can be found at the British Museum in London.

Afterward, the city was also included in Moesia and then Scythia Minor. From Diocletian onwards, it’s been the metropolis of that province. Tomas was conquered by the Byzantines in the 5th century, after which it fell under imperial rule. Maurice campaigned in southern regions like Thrace and Macedonia in the 6th century. In 597/598, during his Balkan expeditions, he besieged Tomis in wintertime when Avars tried to take over this strategic city.

The city of Tomis was eventually renamed Constantina in honor of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great’s sister, Constantia. The earliest usage of this name can be traced back to 950 AD. To lay at the end of Trajan’s Securis, a long wall built to protect from invaders.

After over 500 years as part of the Bulgarian Empire, Constanța became an independent principality of Dobrotitsa/Dobrotici and then Wallachia under Mircea I. It fell under Ottoman rule around 1419.

A railroad was built in 1860, linking Constanța to Cernavodă. Sadly, railway contractors did considerable damage, and many ancient walls and columns, and this work uncovered other remains. A mosaic pavement that is said to have been a port building was excavated and found to be one of the longest in the world.

Ottoman Turks relinquished the city of Constanța and Northern Dobruja in 1878 after the Romanian War of Independence. Now, Romania’s biggest port and transit point for exports (eventually becoming the country’s only seaport). The Constanța Casino, a historical monument and a symbol of the modern city, was the first building constructed on the shore of the Black Sea after Dobruja came under the Romanian administration. Construction began in 1880 and was completed in January 1888.

Geography

The mineral springs in the surrounding area and sea bathing attract many visitors in the summer.

This exceeds the amount in Bucharest and Transylvania. Constanta, a city in Romania, is most well known for being the largest port on the Black Sea and one of Europe’s largest. This has allowed them to build up a shipbuilding industry that is much larger than what you would find elsewhere in Europe.

Hundreds of thousands of people visit Romania annually to explore Constanța’s well-preserved historic center and natural treasures, such as the Costanza Lake. However, industrialization in Constanta has led to its beaches being used more by industry than tourists. Despite being close to other well-known tourist destinations, Constanța still receives a substantial number of visitors each year. The visitors are drawn to the city’s beautiful monuments and attractions. Furthermore, Constanța is a thriving center of commerce and education, and these industries significantly contribute to the local economy.

Transport

The Port of Constanța includes the North Port and is the fourth largest in Europe.

Constanta’s public transit is operated by the Regia Autonomă de Transport în Comun Constanța (RATC) and consists of 23 year-round bus lines and one summer sightseeing double-decker bus line.

Trams were active until the late 2000s when they were decommissioned in favor of long-wheelbase buses.

Tourism

Constanța has plenty of architectural attractions and gives visitors a taste of Romanian life in the older parts. Romania has many tourist attractions, but the historic ruins at Constanta, the seaside resorts on top of that, and its proximity to other attractions like museums and shops make it a big draw for many tourists. With the warm weather and excellent food, there are lots of beach and nightlife opportunities.

The region’s flavors include traditional villages, vineyards, historical attractions, and the Danube Delta. This is the best-preserved delta in Europe and one of the last natural wetlands on Earth.

Sports

Constanta has plenty of football teams. FCV Farul Constanta is in the top flight of Romanian football. There are two rugby teams in Constanța. First is RC Farul Constanta, representing the National League back in Divizia BRD. The other team, Constructorul Cleopatra Constanta, competes in Division A. HCD Constanta is one of the biggest handball clubs in Romania and a famous city. Olympic champion gymnasts Camelia Voinea, Nicoleta Daniela Sofronie, Simona Amarnar, and Cătălina Ponor were all born here. One of the most successful athletes from Constanța is Răzvan Florea, who won a bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics. Former world number 1 tennis player Simona Halep is also from here.
