The city of Cordoba lies in the southern Spanish region of Andalusia, and it is the capital of the province of Cordoba. The town was a prominent Islamic center in the Middle Ages and a Roman city. This city is best known for La Mezquita, a massive mosque built in 784 A.D. that features a columned prayer hall and older Byzantine mosaics. In the 17th century, a Renaissance-style nave was added after it became a Catholic church in 1236.
Many fanciful explanations have been offered for the name Cordoba. One theory is that the Carthaginian general Hamilcar Barca named the city qart Juba after a Numidian commander who was killed nearby. The name may have originated with a Phoenician-Punic qart-bah meaning ‘good town,’ as suggested in 1799 by José Antonio Conde. Latinised as Corduba, the town’s name was given after the Roman conquest.
Neanderthal Man remains dating back to c. 42,000-35,000 BC are the first evidence of human presence in the area. There has been evidence of pre-urban settlements around the mouth of the Guadalquivir river since the 8th century B.C. The population gradually learned copper and silver metallurgy. A payment first appears in history during the Carthaginian expansion across the Guadalquivir. 206 BC was the year that the Romans conquered Cordoba.
Marcus Claudius Marcellus (grandson of Marcus Claudius Marcellus, who had governed both Hispania Ulterior and Hispania Citerior) established a Latin settlement alongside the preexisting Iberian settlement in 169 BC. A dispute exists over its founding date; it may have been in 152 BC. A siege was carried out by Viriatus between 143 BC and 141 BC on the town. There is evidence that a Roman forum was present in the city in 113 BC. The British Museum now houses the famous Cordoba Treasure, which combines local and Roman artistic traditions.
Corduba became a Roman colony between 46 and 45 B.C. under Colonia Patricia. Augustus resettled the city with veteran soldiers after Caesar sacked it in 45 for being loyal to Pompey. Throughout Hispania Ulterior, it became the capital of Baetica and was home to numerous temples and a forum. From Roman Cordoba came the philosopher Seneca the Younger, his father, the orator Seneca the Elder, and his nephew, the poet Lucan.
Through the early 4th century, Corduba’s bishop Hosius (Ossius) dominated the western Church during the late Roman period. In the late 6th century, Corduba became an important city under the Visigoths, who conquered it in the late Byzantine Empire (552-572).
Cordoba is south of the Iberian Peninsula, in a depression formed by the Guadalquivir river, which cuts across the city east-northeast to west-southwest. It is the fourth-largest municipality in Spain and the largest in Andalusia, covering 1,254.25 km2.
There is a city called Cordoba in the middle course of the river. The municipality is divided into three central landscape units: the Sierra, the Valley, and Campiña.

Córdoba’s primary sports team is its association football team, Córdoba C.F., which plays in the Spanish Segunda División B after spending one season in La Liga during the 2014–15 season. The team plays its home matches at the Estadio Nuevo Arcángel, which has a capacity of 20,989 spectators.
There is also a professional futsal team in Cordoba, the Córdoba World Heritage Site, which plays in the Primera División de Futsal. Until August 2019, CD Cordobasket, the local youth basketball club, had a professional team that played in the Liga EBA. Most of the team’s home games are played at the 3,500-seat Palacio Municipal de Deportes Vista Alegre.
The city’s cultural and historic attractions deserve a place on everyone’s bucket list, from the Feria de Los Patios to the Mosque-Cathedral. A must-visit for any traveler, Cordoba has the largest old town in Spain and the only four Unesco-protected sites in the world.
Leather manufacturing and silversmithing are world-famous in Cordoba. It was in Cordoba that the great Roman philosopher Seneca was born.
