An island in the Spree River was inhabited by Sorbs in the tenth century when they constructed a castle. It was recorded in 1156 that the town’s name was first mentioned. During the 13th century, German settlers settled in the city and lived alongside the Sorbs.

The town’s drapery was exported throughout the Middle Ages throughout Brandenburg, Bohemia, and Saxony. Until 1367, Lower Lusatia belonged to the Margraviate of Lusatia, then to the House of Wettin, and eventually to the Bohemian Crown Lands.

The Margraviate of Brandenburg acquired Cottbus from Bohemia in 1445. It was bordered by the Electorate of Saxony in the southwest by a short stretch of Bohemian Lower Lusatia. A Sorbian gymnasium was founded in the city by Jan Rak in 1514, known as the Universitas Serborum. As a result of Lower Lusatia’s ceding by Bohemia to Saxony in 1635, Cottbus became an enclave of the province. Prussia became the Kingdom of Brandenburg-Prussia in 1701.

Cottbus was ceded to Saxony by Prussia following the War of the Fourth Coalition in 1807, reuniting it with Lower Lusatia. After the Napoleonic wars, Cottbus was returned to Prussia by the Congress of Vienna in 1815. Lower Lusatia and Brandenburg were ceded to Prussia and became parts of the Prussian Province of Brandenburg (and Regierungsbezirk Frankfurt).

The German Empire captured Prussia in 1871, including Cottbus. In 1905, Cottbus had 46,270 residents, 97% of whom were Germans, 2% Sorbs, and 1% Poles, according to the Prussian census.

During the interwar period, a concentration camp for unwanted Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe was located in the town.

Branitzer Park

Designed by Prince Hermann Ludwig Heinrich von Pückler-Muskau, it was the finest park in the city. Branitzer Park is considered a masterpiece by this nobleman, one of the foremost landscape architects of his era.

Schloss Branitz

Built in the early 1770s in the Baroque style, the palace on the eastern end of the gardens was restored by Gottfried Semper some 80 years later.

Spremberger Turm

The Spremberger Turm is the Medieval southern gate of Cottbus and one of its way finders. Initially built in the 13th century, the structure was remodeled in the 15th century, and crenellations were added in the 1820s.

Altmarkt

The city’s old marketplace was built in the 1200s, and its location at the intersection of three ancient trading routes is no accident. There is a captivating ensemble of historic buildings framing the square, home to various local and independent businesses.

Kunstmuseum Dieselkraftwerk

Located in the Goethepark east of the old town, this contemporary art museum dates from 1927. When the plant was decommissioned in 1958, it sat idle until it was chosen to house the city’s modern art collection in the 2000s.

Spreeauenpark

A 55-hectare park designed for the Bundesgartschau (Federal Garden Show) in 1995 lies near the zoo and Branitzer Park in the city’s southeast. With its exotic trees and venerable oak avenues, the park is adorned with exotic plants.

Brandenburgisches Apothekenmuseum

This historic pharmacy, initially founded in 1568, houses a museum. You can take a whistle-stop tour of healthcare over the past 400 years at the only pharmacy museum in Brandenburg.

Cottbuser parkreisenbahn

A narrow gauge railway connecting several parks southeast of Cottbus for over 60 years. Pioniereisenbahns are designed to train the next generation of train drivers and other railway personnel through the operation of youth organizations.

Staatstheater Cottbus

The theatre is a monument to the affluence and aspirations of Cottbus at the turn of the 20th century when the textile industry roared, and the bourgeoisie was hungry for culture.

Oberkirche St. Nikolai

A three-aisled Late Gothic church built with bricks in 15th century Lower Lusatia, the Oberkirche is Lower Lusatia’s largest church.
