Craiova Overview

Craiova is a Romanian city on the east bank of the River Jiu, and it’s Romania’s 6th largest municipality. It is located near Southern Carpathia and has historically played an essential role in local politics.

Etymology and names

Craiova may have derived from two possible sources: from the Old Slavic word for “king,” which in Romanian is “claim.” The other potential source could be the Slavonic word for “edge” or “border.” It cannot be determined which of the words is the real root of the city’s name because there are no mentions before 1475. The name may have a Bulgarian origin due to historical ethnic minorities in the area.

The city of Černov is known as “Krajowa” in German and “Királyi” in Hungarian.

History

Craiova, located in the place of the ancient Roman and Dacian city Pelendava, used to be the Capital of the Oltenia region. Its original princes were the highest-ranking boyars of Wallachia. These initially belonged to the Craiovești family; however, they changed their name several times. The word for coins in Romanian originates from the term for banknotes, Ban, which was a privilege of nobility.

“The Craiovești family’s economic power at the end of the 16th century was about 100 villages (182 financial goods)”. The Magnates at that time had so much power they were able to maintain rulers in power who would pledge their allegiance. The Craiovești family had a lot of hospodars ruling Romania, who include: Neagoe Basarab (1602- 1611), Radu Șerban (1602- 1611), Matei Basarab (1632-1654), Constantin Șerban (1642- 1652).

In 1395 Craiova was probably the scene of a victory won by Prince Mircea I of Wallachia over Bayezid I, the Ottoman Sultan. This historical event is often called the “Battle of Rovine.” Frequently referred to as the “city” by historians coming in the 16th century, Craiova’s role as an important economic hub started somewhere in the second half. The effects of the Habsburg occupation of Oltenia in 1718-1739 are felt in the economic decline and increasing centralism, which led to an increase in hajduk actions of Craiova’s population. In the same context, the Craiova boyars show their discontent through protests. In 1761, under Prince Constantine Mavrocordatos, the bans relocated to Bucharest, and they left behind kaymakams to act as their representatives in Craiova.

Under Prince Emanuel Giani Russet, Wallachia’s old seat was moved to Craiova in 1770–1771. At the time, the prince wanted to establish a safe residence during the Russo-Turkish War of 1768–1774. Rebel Pasha Osman Pazvantoğlu’s troops destroyed a large part of the city.

During the Wallachian uprising of 1821, inhabitants of present-day Dolj County helped Tudor Vladimirescu a lot. Inhabitants of Covurlui County also joined Tudor Vladimirescu’s Pandurs in large numbers. They participated in the expedition on Bucharest and succeeded in taking over the Capital. During the first two decades of the 19th century, Craiova enjoyed economic prosperity, focusing on handicraft trades and public services. During the Russian occupation and at the start of the Organic Statute rule (1828-1834), the city increased its output. In 1832, 595 shops and 197 were rented out to soldiers as barracks. Of 398 houses, 196 were brick, and 202 were still wood. Back in the day, Craiova mainly exported agricultural products like wheat and leather to both the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Ottoman Empire.

Climate

Craiova has a continental climate with Mediterranean influences, where summers average around 30 degrees Celsius and winters average about 4 degrees.

Demographics

As of 2011, 269,506 people lived in this city, and that’s a lot of people. Starting from about 2003 up until 2011, the population in Bucharest has been decreasing, and it became one of the six most populated cities in Romania.

Economy

The first two decades of the 19th century marked a period of economic growth for Craiova, with its inhabitants diversifying their preoccupations regarding trade/commerce and public services. Craiova is a beautiful city compared with others, and it’s an administrative center with many cultures.

Tsarist rule (1828–1834) witnessed significant economic growth in Craiova. A total of 595 shops were present at the time, 187 made of wood and 398 made of stone. The city is Oltenia’s leading economic and commercial center; it used to export cereal, animal hides, wax, tallow, and spines to Austria and Turkey. In response to high export demands, a Romanian society for cereal transport on the Danube was established, in 1846, in Craiova and was called the first company of this type.

Education

The first school in Craiova opened its doors for the first time in 1759 following a decree by Constantin Obedeanu. The school was known as Școala Naţională de Limba Română (National School of Romanian Language), and it took this name in the spring of 1826. This is the second High School in Romania, established in 1957.

Sport

Craiova was first introduced to the football world in 1921 with the formation of Craiova Craiova and Rovine Griviţa Craiova. They merged in 1940, forming F.C. Craiova—the club that won the unofficial war championship. Later, another Romanian soccer team, Universitatea Craiova, became the first to reach the semi-finals of a European football tournament. In 1982-1983, they did this during the UEFA Cup.

Transportation

Craiova’s public transportation service started in September 1948 and had only two buses from Bucharest. These buses connected the Craiova railway station with Nicolae Romanescu Park.

The tram system was introduced in 1987 and used double tracking on an elevated line 18.4 km long, which ensured a lower energy consumption. Craiova’s public transport system today comprises three trolley tram lines and 17 bus lines. It is managed by the Regia Autonomă de Transport Craiova (RAT Craiova), a corporation run by City Hall. Today there are 190 buses, 35 trams, and some night buses serve the city.

Craiova is a railway hub connecting all other major Romanian cities and major local destinations through the national Carpatair network.

Daily trains from Craiova connect to these destinations: Bucharest (3 hours), Brașov (6 – 8 hours – via clicking service), Cluj-Napoca (8 – 10 hours – connecting service), Sibiu (4- 7 hours), and Timișoara.

After a recent upgrade, Craiova Airport continues to provide excellent service to its city.
