Darmstadt Overview

Darmstadt is located not far from Frankfurt. It’s best known for the Mathildenhöhe district and its art nouveau buildings, such as the Wedding Tower in the center of town. The Museum Künstlerkolonie features beautiful glass sculptures and textiles, including a striking collection of German Art Nouveau jewelry. Antique art can be found at the Hessisches Landesmuseum. To the northeast, you can visit Messel Pit which has fossils from the Eocene era. Several kilometers to the south is the infamous Frankenstein Castle. It’s been said that this castle may have served as an inspiration for a classic book.

History

Darmstadt is first mentioned towards the end of the 11th century and was known as Darmundestat. The origin of the name is unknown. ‘Dar-mund’ in Middle Low German translates as “Boggy Headlands”, but it could be a misspelling in the local dialect of another name. It is sometimes said that the name of the city comes from the stream called Darmbach, which used to run through it. However, this course of water only took its present-day name much later, when it was given this name after the city.

Darmstadt was created as a city in 1330. The Holy Roman Emperor Ludwig I, also known as Ludwig the Bavarian, allowed it to become a city-state and at that point, it belonged to the counts of Katzenelnbogen. The city, now called Darmstadt, used to be just a secondary residence for the counts. A small castle was constructed in its place at the site of the current building.

It was passed to the Landgraviate of Hesse in 1479, made the seat of the ruling landgraves (1567–1806), then Grand Dukes.

The population of the city grew from 10,000 to 72,000 over the 19th century. This was largely due to the establishment of a polytechnic school in 1877 that eventually became known as TU Darmstadt.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Darmstadt was an important center for art. There were annual competitions and many architectural treasures came out of that time. Additionally, in 1912, the chemist Anton Kollisch first synthesized MDMA for Merck Pharmaceuticals. Darmstadt’s municipal area was extended in 1937, including the neighboring areas of Arheilgen and Eberstadt, and in 1938 was separated from the surrounding district (Kreis).

It’s just one more thing to keep you entertained at this great annual event! The Schlossgrabenfest and Spirit of 66 are held in the same location every year. The Schlossgrabenfest is more lively featuring mostly live music, while the Spirit of 66 has more focus on amusement rides and foods.

Culture

The Staatstheater Darmstadt (State Theatre Darmstadt) dates back to the year 1711. It has been in its present building since 1972 and features three halls that can be used separately. Darmstadt’s ‘Grand Hall’ seats 956 people and is the city’s opera venue. ‘The Small Hall’ (which in German is “Kleines Haus”) mostly hosts plays and dances and has 482 seats. The smaller venue, ‘Kammerspiele’, has 120 seats.

Among the museums in Darmstadt, the most important are the Hessisches Landesmuseum (Hessian State Museum), the Porcelain Museum (exhibition of the ducal porcelain), the Schlossmuseum (exhibition of the ducal residence and possessions), the Kunsthalle Darmstadt (exhibitions of modern art), the exhibition center Mathildenhöhe and the Museum Künstlerkolonie (Art Nouveau museum).

The International Music Institute Darmstadt, housing one of the world’s largest collections of post-war sheet music, also hosts the biennial International Summer Courses for New Music (ISCM). Geography

Darmstadt is situated in the Upper Rhine Plain, one of Germany’s most densely populated urban regions. Famous for its excellent wines and diverse cultural heritage, this area offers something for everyone. Darmstadt’s southeastern neighborhoods are positioned on the Southeastern border of the Odenwald, a low mountain range in Southern Hesse between the Main and Neckar Rivers.

Climate

Southern Hesse is well known for its moderate climate which allows the wine to be produced on a large scale in the region south of Darmstadt. The weather is often volatile, with summers being warm and humid and frequent thunderstorms, while winters are typically rather warm. You will most likely experience snowfall at the start of January and February, but relatively mild winters with little snowfall can occur.

Schools

Public schools in the City of Darmstadt are a great choice for students and come at an affordable price. Sport

Darmstadt’s biggest sports club is the football (soccer) club, SV Darmstadt 98. They play their home games at the Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor.

Other, amateur football clubs are 1. FCA Darmstadt and Rot-Weiß Darmstadt.

Darmstadt Diamonds is the city’s American football team.

Technology

Darmstadt is home to many research institutions such as the Fraunhofer Society (Fraunhofer IGD, Fraunhofer LBF, Fraunhofer SIT) and the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI, “Society for heavy ion Research”), which operates a particle accelerator in northern Darmstadt. The GSI discovered the chemical element darmstadtium (atomic number: 110), named after the city in 2003. This makes Darmstadt one of only eight settlements with elements named after them (the others being Ytterby in Sweden (four elements); Stockholm in Sweden (holmium); Strontian in Scotland; Copenhagen in Denmark (whose Latin name gives hafnium); Paris (whose Latin name gives lutetium); Berkeley, California; and Dubna in Russia). Several heavy metals were synthesized and researched at the Darmstadt facility. These elements include meitnerium (atomic number: 109) (1982), hassium (atomic number: 108) (1984), roentgenium (atomic number: 111) (1994) and copernicium (atomic number: 112) (1996).

Mathildenhöhe

In 1899, Ernst Ludwig, the Grand Duke of Hesse came up with the idea of creating a colony of artists to breathe new life into Darmstadt’s culture and economy. Mathildenhöhe has these amazing buildings designed by top architects like Behrens, Christiansen & Olbrich. They’ve now listed monuments and show what’s possible in contemporary architecture.

Hochzeitsturm

Staying at Mathildenhöhe near Frankfurt? Don’t miss the iconic Wedding Tower, just shy of 50 meters tall and built-in 2008 to commemorate Ernst Ludwig’s wedding to Princess Eleonore of Solms-Hohensolms.

Schlossmuseum

The museum has been open to the public since 1924, six years after Ernst Ludwig relinquished his ancestral collections when he abdicated in 1918. From the 1600s to the 1900s there are silverware, gold, dresses, porcelain, and more.

Messel Pit

Darmstadt is home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is recognized as the richest fossil source from the Eocene Epoch. The pit is open to tourists now, who can take an hour-long tour where they get to learn about the history and methods of fossil excavation. Guides also allow people to touch recently unearthed specimens if they want – what a sight!

Museum Künstlerkolonie Darmstadt

The south facade is sure to catch your eye for its ornate curved entrance doorway with luxuriant floral ornamentation and a pair of sculptures representing man and woman. The museum offers many exhibits that focus on the Mathildenhöhe Exhibition of 1899 to 1914. You can peruse detailed exhibits of arts and crafts created for this event including furniture, sculpture, jewelry, and pottery.

Waldspirale

The name “Waldspirale” (forest spiral) refers partly to the roof, which is planted with a grove of trees. The building is in the Bürgerparkviertel and rises to 12 stories high. It holds 105 apartments. From the outside, you can see its intertwining bands of texture, soft curves, and seemingly random window designs. This gives it a playful, childlike quality.

Herrngarten

Darmstadt’s historic and largest park was originally formed by combining three smaller parks. In 1766 it was then redesigned in the English style according to orders from Landgrave Caroline, then in 1811 Grand Duke Ludwig launched renovations that made it into a Garden.

Ludwigsmonument

Nicknamed “Langer Ludwig” (Tall Ludwig), this 40-meter column and statue on Luisenplatz are one of Darmstadt’s major landmarks. This honors the first Hessian Constitution and depicts Ludwig I, the first Grand Duke of Hesse, and by the Rhine, who ruled from 1815 until 1848. The neoclassical monument was begun in 1841 when he was still alive and planned by architects Georg Moller and Balthasar Harres.

Park Rosenhöhe

Princess Elisabeth of Bavaria’s Park was first landscaped at the turn of the 18th century and a Neoclassical Mausoleum, built in 1828 – as she too sadly died before her father – stands as a monument not just to her but to all those buried here.

Russian Chapel

Sitting under the Hochzeitsturm, this church with its onion domes of gold reminds you that Darmstadt was the birthplace of Empress Anna. All of the building materials for this church were sourced from Russia, and it is even claimed that the foundation of the buildings sits on railway ties that were imported to Norway.

Großherzoglich-Hessische Porzellansammlung

Ernst Ludwig decided to open up his stash of porcelain and other ceramics to the public at the Rococo Prinz-Georg-Palais in 1908. This was a building from 1710. The museum is open on Fridays and weekends and features the Hessian Grand Duke’s collection of paintings. We have a variety of pieces, acquired over the last century.

Jagdschloss Kranichstein

Jagdschloss Kranichstein was a hunting lodge and grand palace which entertained generations of Landgraves and Grand Dukes on their court hunts. Now the palace is divided between a hotel, restaurant, and museum.

European Space Operations Centre (ESOC)

The purpose of this center is to operate space vessels in orbit, build operational systems for managing space missions, and maintain the ESA’s network of global tracking stations. At any one time, over 10 spacecraft are being controlled from this one facility and the people working there never stop. They work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Zoo Vivarium Darmstadt

The zoo is on a relatively small two-hectare space, but it still accommodates 190 different animal species in its many green enclosures, terrariums, and aquariums. There are plenty of opportunities outside to meet animals, like Bennett’s tree-kangaroos or the African dwarf goats in the petting zoo.
