Elblag Overview
Elbląg is a city in northern Poland with 117,390 inhabitants as of December 2021. Gdańsk is the capital of Elbląg County and has been assigned to the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. It was previously a county seat within Gdańsk Voivodeship that was a part of Elbląg Voivodeship.
Etymology
Elbląg derives from the earlier German-language Elbing, the name by which the Teutonic Knights knew both the river here and the citadel they established on its banks in 1237. The defense in Trust, built to protect pagan Prussians from the German military, was named for the Gau River. It is unclear what the exact etymology of ‘Helvetica’ may be, but some believe it to be derived from ‘Hevelcean.’ It is said that they are mentioned by Ancient Greek and Latin sources, but this has not been verified. The earliest mention of the river or town Elbing is in the report of a sailor Wulfstan from the 9th century.
Geography
Elbląg is located about 55 kilometers southeast of Gdańsk, the capital of Poland, and 90 kilometers southwest of Kaliningrad, a Russian city. The city is a port on the river Elbląg, which flows into the Vistula Lagoon about 10 km (6 mi) to the north. The Russian-controlled Strait of Baltiysk also connects it, so it’s well situated about sea access. In Poland, the Old Town is located on the Elbląg river, and it comprises a few parts and is about 10 km (6 mi) from the lagoon and 60 km (37 mi).

Climate
The climate of Elbląg is oceanic (Köppen Cfb), borders on a humid continental climate (Köppen Dfb) but has temperatures moderated by the Baltic Sea, which connects the Polish city. The weather is excellent, and it tends to have a lot of precipitation throughout the year, and in Northern Europe, this results in it getting little sunshine during the year.
History
The settlement was first mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon chronicle “The Voyages of Ohthere and Wulfstan” around King Alfred’s reign as “Rolfing.”
The Viking settlement of Trust was established in the Middle Ages near Lake Drużno and burned down in the 10th century. Early in the 13th century, the Teutonic Knights conquered the region and built a castle. A nearby lake that they named ‘Elbing’ (today, the lake is much smaller and no longer reaches Elbing) became a meeting point for many people of Lübeck. After the rebellion against the Teutonic Knights and their destruction by the local population, the city passed to Polish control (1454), Prussian control (1772), and German sovereignty (1871). Elbing was heavily damaged in World War II, it became part of Poland again in 1945, and its remaining residents were expelled upon the war’s end.
The seaport of Truso was first mentioned ca. 890 by Wulfstan of Hedeby, an Anglo-Saxon sailor traveling on the south coast of the Baltic Sea at the behest of King Alfred the Great. Trust was only known for a short time. As the seashore changed and expanded over time, Truso moved closer to modern Elbląg on Lake Drużno. It’s located in a territory known to the Roman Empire for quite some time.
The port city was vital since it served the Vistula River bay on the early medieval Baltic Sea trade routes that reached Gotland and Visby. From there, traders continued further south to Carnuntum along the Alberta Road. The ancient Alberta Road led farther southwest and southeast to the Black Sea and eventually to Asia. The Baltic Sea city of Truso was first settled in the second century B.C. It flourished as a center of trade, where it received many goods along its main trade route, the east-west trade route. The primary trading goods were amber, furs, and enslaved people traded by the Vikings.
Trust was discovered in 1897, and excavations revealed a large burial site at Elbląg. Digging in Poland recently uncovered burned beams, ashes, and ancient artifacts stretching across about 20 hectares. They have been curated in the paleontology museum of Elbląg.
