Elche Overview

In the Valencian Community, Alicante province is home to Elche, a Spanish city and municipality. Elche’s population was 228,647 in 2014, making it the third most populated municipality in the region (after Valencia and Alicante) and the 20th largest in Spain. Vinalopó is part of the Baix Vinalopó region.

Some parts of the municipality are coastal, but the city proper is roughly 15 km (9 mi) from the Mediterranean Sea. Vinalopó is a small creek that runs through the town. In Spain, Elche is the center of the footwear industry. An airport serves Elche and Alicante in the province of Alicante, the fifth busiest airport in Spain (Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport).

About 800,000 people are living in the conurbation of Elche, Alicante, and other municipalities. A World Heritage Site, Palm Grove, is one of the city’s most notable features.

History

L’Alcúdia is 10 km from the current city’s location and the immediate predecessor of today’s Elche. Initially, this location had been settled by the Greeks, then occupied by the Carthaginians and Romans. Ionian Greeks from Helike in the Achaean region established a new colony in Helika around 600 BC. During the First and Second Punic Wars, it served as a point of resistance against the Carthaginian advance in Spain. The Romans named the city Ilici or Illice and granted it colonial status; a Gothic occupation followed a brief Byzantine rule.

During the Moorish occupation, Elche lost its importance and was moved slightly north to its present location. James II of Aragon took it from the Moors during the Reconquista in the 13th century. Over the 18th century, the city grew and became more important during the 19th century as the railway arrived and the traditional footwear industry grew.

Elche has been home to many archaeological remains, the most significant being the stone bust of the Lady of Elche (called the Lady of Elche or the Lady of Elx in Spanish and Valencian, respectively). According to some sources, it dates back to the 4th century B.C., during the Iberian period. A copy of the original can be found in the National Archaeological Museum of Spain.

The title of the city was granted to Elche by King Amadeo in 1871.

As a result of the development of the espadrille industry in the 19th century, this municipality became the top manufacturer of textile footwear in Spain. During the late nineteenth century, leather footwear factories began to be built by local entrepreneurs. During and after World War I, the footwear industry grew.

Geography

UNESCO declared the Palmeral de Elche a World Heritage Site, the only palm grove with North African origins in Europe and the largest on the continent. Aside from being one of the world’s most extensive palm groves, Palm Grove is also the northernmost. Today, Elche contains 97 orchards containing 70,000 date palm trees on the Vinalopó River’s east bank. There are approximately 130,000 date palms in other large plantations outside the Elche city domain. There are 200,000 palm trees in Elche and its surroundings. Palm Grove covers 3.5 km2 (1.4 square miles). Within Elche’s city limits, 1.5 km2 (0.58 square miles) is protected by Palm Grove. Elche’s Palm Grove is home to the National Artistic Garden, the Palm Grove Museum, the Route of El Palmeral, and the Municipal Park.

Demographics

The municipality has 10.497% foreign residents – 3.267% from European countries, 3.369% from African countries, 2.46% from American countries, 1.139% from Asian countries, and 15 from Oceania and stateless people. The table below shows the population trend for the 20th and 21st centuries by the start of each decade.

Economy

As one of the largest footwear centers in Spain and Europe, Elche’s economy heavily depends on the footwear industry, with over 1,000 shoe factories and brands such as Pura Lopez, Kelme, and Panama Jack. Elche also has other economic activities:

  • Agriculture (dates, olives, cereals, and pomegranates) has lost importance recently.
  • The rubber industry.
  • Trade, which employs 20% of the workforce.
  • Tourism.

It has a conference center (Ciutat d’Elx), an international airport (Alicante Airport), a public university, Miguel Hernández University, and a private university, CEU Cardenal Herrera University.

Climate

The climate in Elche is hot and semi-arid (Köppen climate classification: BSh), with mild, dry winters and hot, dry summers. Sunshine hours in the city range between 2,900 and 3,000 per year, and rainfall is scarce yearly.

Temperatures in Elche are usually above 18°C (64°F) during the year. A record-breaking high temperature was recorded on 12 July 2021 at 43.2 °C (109.8 °F), while the record-breaking low was registered on 12 February 1956 at 5.0 °C (23.0 °F).

Transport

Located around 10 kilometers from the city center, the Alicante–Elche Airport is the fifth busiest airport in Spain. Motorways serve the city’s outskirts, and the railway between Alicante and Murcia del Carmen runs through a tunnel under the city, with two underground stations; Elche-Parque (Valencian: Elx-Parc) and Elche-Carrús (Valencian: Elx-Carrús). A commuter rail service connecting Murcia and Alicante via line C-1 and Media Distancia trains between Valencia Nord station, and Murcia serves these cities.

A new station, Elche-Matola, was added to the Madrid-Levante high-speed rail network in 2021, branching off from the line to Alicante near Monforte del Cid. There are 500 parking spaces available at the new AVE station and 50 motorcycle parking spaces.
