Ełk also spelled Elk in English, is a city in northeastern Poland with 61,677 people in December 2021. This city is the seat of Ełk County in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. A glacier formed Ek Lake, surrounded by extensive forests and lies on its shores. In historical Masuria, it is the largest city and unofficial capital. The area is known for its legal hunting opportunities.
The area where the town of Ełk is located was initially inhabited by Jatvingians, a Baltic people, during the early middle ages. Skomand, the last leader of the pagan Jatvingians, capitulated to the crusading Teutonic Knights in 1281, who had been invited by Konrad I of Masovia from the Polish Piast dynasty in 1226 to end the constant pagan raids.
In 1323, the Brandenburg commandery administered the northern part of the region, while the more significant amount belonged to the Balga commandery. It dates back to 1398 when the Teutonic Knights built a castle around an Old Prussian settlement. There are several postulated origins for the town’s name. A theory suggests that its German name Lyck comes from its Old Prussian name, Luks (from Luka, the word for waterlily). Another theory suggests that Lyck originates from the Polish word “łęg,” meaning meadow. Old Polish names of the town included Łek, Łęg, and Łęk. 1445 was the year it received its town rights.
It was at the request of the Polish King Casimir IV Jagiellon that the region be incorporated into the Kingdom of Poland, which resulted in the town becoming part of the Polish state after the outbreak of the Thirteen Years’ War in 1454. The city sided with the Prussian Confederation during this period. Initially captured by the Teutonic Knights in 1455, the Poles and the Teutonic Knights then conquered the town alternately. As a fief, it became part of Poland after 1466.
Jan Malecki, a Polish printer from Kraków who had fled or moved to Ducal Prussia for material reasons, founded a printing house on an estate donated to him by Duke Albert of Prussia in 1537. In 1546, Malecki founded the first school for secondary education in Masuria, in which Polish nobles from the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, as well as Poles and Germans from Ducal Prussia, were taught in Polish; the position of Polish teacher continued until 1819. Malecki converted to Lutheranism and translated and published Luther’s Small Catechism in Polish. Hieronim Malecki, the school’s first rector, was a Polish pastor, translator, publisher, and co-creator of the Polish literary language. Poland had one of the most thriving centers for Polish-language printing during the middle of the 16th century. A visit by the King of Poland, Wadysaw IV Vasa, took place in 1639. The region remained under Polish suzerainty until 1660.
Among the local sports clubs are the football club Mazur Ełk, boxing club Mazur Ełk, cycling club LUKK Ełk, judo club MKS Żak Ełk and basketball club Wilki Ełk.
The Polish Cyclo-cross Championships were held in Ełk in 1998, 2005, and 2012.
Since the medieval Christianization of the region, the city’s population has been Roman Catholic and, after the Reformation, almost entirely Lutheran. After the war, Roman Catholicism was again the dominant religion, although Protestant churches were also present and played an essential role in the religious life of the population. In addition to Methodists and Baptists, there are Pentecostals (Assembly of God – Kościół Zielonoświątkowy) and other churches. Ełk is the center of the Catholic Diocese of Ełk with its bishop Jerzy Mazur.
In 1999, the town adopted its coat of arms after Pope John Paul II visited it. Green has been replaced with yellow in the former emblem, while the deer has been changed. Last but not least, the Papacy’s symbol has been added.
In 1967, a different emblem featuring the two-faced head of Janus was used, but its origin has yet to be discovered.
