Erlangen Overview

Erlangen is a city in Bavaria, Germany. The population of Erlangen stands at 116,062 as of March 30th, 2022. This makes it the smallest city among all nearby European cities. The city of Erlangen reached a population of 100,000 in 1974 and was considered a major city.

Geography

Erlangen is located on the edge of the Middle Franconian Basin and at the floodplain of the Regnitz River. The river divides Erlangen into two halves, which are about equal in size. The western part of Erlangen has a canal parallel to the river that runs throughout.

Climate

Erlangen is in a cool temperate zone with influences of both maritime and continental climates. Its location makes it hard to say it’s in one zone exclusively. Sometimes there is a flimsy mist that gets pushed through the valley and gathers in the river. This happens during both spring and fall! There have been 97 lightning strikes in 2020.

History

The Regnitz Valley already had importance to Bavarians as a passageway in the Neolithic. In Spardorf, a blade scraper was found in loess deposits that date back to the Gravettian period, placing it at approximately 80000 BC. Because vegetation would have been scarce in the area, it wasn’t until around 2600 BC that farming was established in central Europe. The Erlangen Sign Stones (Erlanger Zeichensteine) were the first records of human occupation at the end of this period and were found near Breitmünster. One of the most interesting things about the funerary use of stone plates in this period is that they were sometimes reused later as grave edges in Urnfield culture.

When this mound was investigated in 1913, it was found to have things from many different periods. Items from the urnfield period (13th century BC), Hallstatt, and La Tène periods (3rd-1st centuries BC) were also found. Kosbacher Altar, which was built in the late Hallstatt period (500 BC), stands next to a hill. It was constructed with four upright pillars and is square. There is a reconstruction of the site in the Erlangen city museum located on Middle guard street.

Population

111,962 (2019)

Religion

In 2016, 28% of the inhabitants followed Protestantism while Roman Catholicism came in at 28%. People belonging to other denominations or religious communities amounted to 43% of the population. The remaining 7% were either nondenominational or opted not to declare a religion.

Politics

From medieval times to the present there is evidence of a city council in Erlangen. It alternates between two and four mayors every four weeks.

The Neustadt was one of the first administrations by Reformed presbytery – they were the first church to be processed in the present-day area of Dresden. This administration went in place for over a year with 4 mayors, 3 French and 1 German. 1701 was the year the British government introduced a newly elected body called the city council. Every two years, there are four mayors and eight councilors who serve for two years. The administration was later reorganized several times.

After the unification of old and new towns in 1812, rules were introduced to govern the city. From 1918 to the present, the first mayors were given the title of Oberbürgermeister. In 1952, the position of Lord Mayor was introduced to Bavaria and has been amended many times over the following 80 years.

The number of people involved in this city government has been increasing steadily. In 1818 there was just one city council of ten people, in 1900 twelve mayoral powers were granted. After the Second World War, there was only one municipal council, and today, there are 36 councilors leading the way. In 1978, Wolfgang Lederer became the first Green politician to enter a Bavarian City council.

There are fifteen districts in the old city of Erlangen. They were created shortly after 1967 and 1972 when some towns were incorporated into the city of Erlangen. One of these towns was Steudach, which is a beautiful town surrounded by clear, blue water. The number of members on the local advisory board depends on the number of members in each area and can vary between five and seven. The local advisory councils are the elected government of a given area. They’re made up of members born in or living in a particular governmental district and they oversee issues of importance to them such as public transport, health aspects, and care for elderly citizens.

Erlangen has a lively youth parliament that is elected every two years by the Erlangen’s 12- to 18-year-olds. Older people are represented by the seniors’ advisory board and people of migration backgrounds are represented by the council on foreigners and integration. For many years, there has been an advisory council for nearly every topic. They provide advice to the city council on issues relating to that particular topic area.

Various groups in Erlangen, such as political parties and municipal committees, are active in local politics. They include organizations that focus on different topics like referendums for example. The “Altstadtforum” is an alliance of 19 organizations (including all the parties represented in the city council and associations), advocating an attractive, liveable, and sustainable old town in Erlangen. It’s worth highlighting that this “alliance” is not a registered political party.

City council

There are 50 members of the city council. One of those members is the mayor. They last held elections in 2014. With 17 seats, the CSU is the strongest faction. The SPD has 15 and additionally Lord Mayor, as well as Alliance 90/The Greens at 8 seats. Additionally, the FDP and Erlanger Linke each have 4 seats. Finally, The ÖDP and Free Voters both have 2 seats.” The CSU, SPD, GLF, and FDP each form a parliamentary group in the city council; the Greens and DP form a committee community for traffic matters; so-called “traffic light coalition” consisting of SPD, Green/Green List & FDP has 28 votes under Mayor.

Economy

Erlangen, in the German state of Bavaria, is a city that achieved a GDP of €10.003 billion in 2016 making it 36th internationally. The GDP per capita in the same year was 91,531 € (Bavaria: 44,215 €/ Germany 38,180 €). That’s how much each of those cities made on average. It was the fourth highest of all independent cities in Germany. In 2017 the population of Munich was estimated at 860,000. The unemployment rate in December of 2018 was 3.4% which was above the average of 2.7%.

Erlangen has a strong economy dominated by Siemens and their related enterprises, as well as the Friedrich-Alexander-University. Businesses in Erlangen benefit from the low cost of living, a college system catering to the needs of all business sectors, and high-quality amenities for its workforce. In a study about the competitiveness of all 402 German city districts, Darmstadt ranked 6th in Germany. The city has achieved remarkable growth and is more competitive with many other programs.

Environmental protection

Strict environmental policies have been a part of life in Erlangen since the beginning of the environmental movement when Germany created strict rules on how to protect the planet. More awards are received for these efforts. The city of Hamburg is a federal capital for nature protection. The title for European Environmental Year 1987/88 and the title “Partner of the European Environmental Year 1987/88” were both awarded to the city in 1988. Natürlich ERLANGEN is a campaign in Erlangen, Germany to “spend green” and reduce the city’s carbon footprint. The focus of the campaign is on expanding the use of photovoltaics as well as switching to other environmentally-friendly sources such as solar or wind power. Since 2003, Erlangen’s solar electricity consumption has gone up more than 20x to 16,700 kW annually. The city of Erlangen participates in one of the country’s leading renewable energy networks – Solarbundes. Erlangen, one of the top-ranked German cities in 2012, placed 3rd, coming second in European Solar League.

Erlangen is the first city in Germany with a solar system installed in every school. This has been going on since 2007 which is now officially over. The so-called Climate Protection School atlas has been set up on the Internet. Students can enter information about their school’s solar system, which is then shown on the map. Solar city maps were also created in 2011 and are displayed online.

Sport

The main sports club in the city, HC Erlangen, currently plays in the top division. They’ve been playing their home games at Arena Nürnberg due to having no suitable venue for Handball in Erlangen since 2014.

There are lower league football teams in the city as well, such as FSV Erlangen-Bruck, BSC Erlangen, and SC Eltersdorf.

The old army barracks used to have a baseball diamond for the soldiers and their families and after the soldiers left, it stayed around for use by today’s Erlangen White Sox. The Erlangen Sharks are a local football team and play on an adjacent grass field used by other parts of Spielvereinigung Erlangen. The White Sox also use that field.

Orangery
