Espoo Overview
Espoo is a municipality in the region of Uusimaa in Finland. It sits on the Gulf of Finland and is surrounded by Helsinki, Vantaa, and Kauniainen.
Espoo’s history dates back to 8,000 BC. A lot of it is speculative. But what is known is that the settlements existed in the Prehistoric Era, gained momentum in the Early Middle Age, and paved the way for large-scale population pressure and eventually abandonment during the Iron Age. It’s known that thousands of Swedish-speaking Finns moved to the coastal areas after the Northern Crusades. One of these settlements became Espoo, a self-governed Christian parish that has been in existence for centuries.
Etymology
There is a debate as to who is more to blame for the name of Espoo since the colonizers renamed it and not the native inhabitants. The name of Espoo may have derived from the Medieval Swedish village of Espaby or Espoby which was located in the western part of the present-day city. The name of the village may have a connection to the European city that was in ruins, meaning aspens may have been growing there by a nearby riverbank. The old Swedish word for aspen is ‘äspe’, and ‘å’ means river. The suffix -by usually refers to a village.
Prehistory
Espoo was first settled by hunter-gatherers around 8,000 years ago after the Last Glacial Period ended. Those who settled the southern parts of the current city lived around lakes Pitkäjärvi, Bodomjärvi, and Loojärvi. The northern parts were still largely covered by the sea. In the Stone Age, people in Espoo lived close to streams and beaches, which provided shelter from cold continental winds. Living near water provided better hunting and fishing opportunities. Seasonal changes were used to dictate how people lived their lives and they couldn’t spend the entire year in one community or area.
During the Bronze Age, humans shifted south while settlements were scarce. More than 70 cairn-like graves from the period have been discovered mainly in southern Espoo. For centuries, the use of specially treated tools made working in ironwork far more complicated. Today, with advancements in technology, this is not an issue and enables people to create objects with a level of functionality that was previously only obtained by using stone or other materials. A cool climate and a few archaeological discoveries give us an idea of the type of era that Espoo was in during this period.
Geography
Espoo has a total area of 528 square kilometers (203.9 sq mi)—312 square kilometers (120.5 sq mi) of land and 216 square kilometers (83.4 sq mi) of water! Its highest point is Velskola, which is 114 m above sea level, and its lowest point. Espoo is a part of the Greater Helsinki metropolitan region and it’s surrounded by towns and cities like Kirkkonummi, Vihti, Nurmijärvi, Vantaa, and Kauniainen. They’re all close by so you’ll never have to get in trouble for going out to enjoy your favorite bar or restaurant.
For a city its size, Espoo is surprisingly home to lots of natural areas. The southern part of the city is characterized by water, including a variety of coasts and 165 islands.

Espoo is divided into seven major areas (Finnish: suuralueet, Swedish: storområden): Vanha-Espoo, Suur-Espoonlahti, Pohjois-Espoon, Suur-Kauklahti, Suur Leppävaara and finally Suur Tapiola.

Demographics
By 2020, Espoo is expected to have over 300k residents—which would make it the 7th most densely populated city in Finland. This number increased by 18% from 2010!
There were 90% Finnish citizens in Finland in 2018 and 10% of other nationalities. There were 53.6% Lutheran religious affiliations, 4.3% other religions, and 42.1% who didn’t identify with any faith.
Espoo has many high-income suburbs, and six out of the ten highest average income postal code areas in Finland are in Espoo.
Language
The City of Espoo is officially bilingual, and the majority of its population, in 2020, spoke Finnish first. The country is preparing to make even more changes to its language law in 2020 as well. That being said, 6.9% spoke Swedish and 18% had a first language other than either Finnish or Swedish.
Culture
EMMA (Espoo Museum of Modern Art) is a museum in Suurhirveskylä that began with a refurbished old print house, WeeGee House. Helsinki has a variety of places to visit, from museums focused on history or technology to natural and cultural attractions. You’ll also find a fair amount of shopping and dining as well as a wealth of entertainment. Tapiola Cultural Centre is a place where many concerts and arts performances take place. Out of the area, it is located in Tapiola, the largest district in Espoo. It is also known for being home to the world-renowned Tapiola Sinfonietta orchestra.
Esbo kartano is one of the many manors in Espoo and gives you a glimpse of what life was like when it was first built. It doesn’t need too much effort to visit, as it’s open to the public every day from 9 am-4 pm. Roland’s house was built in 1914, just before World War I. The mill from the time is on a road called King’s Road (Finnish: Kuninkaantie, Swedish: Kungsvägen). The stone arch bridge, Finland’s first walled stone bridge dating back to 1777 is also on this main road which passes by Roland’s manor. The main building is available for rent for weddings and other similar events. There is also a guided tour option available through request. The other manor, the one located near the northern shore of Lake Bodom, is open to the public. The historic manor hosts a renowned restaurant and club rooms. Guests are encouraged to take in an incredible atmosphere while exploring the eclectic decor, original furniture, and exquisite decor. A public space called Kaisankoti sanatory was also located deep within its grounds until recently, so guests can still catch a glimpse of that part of the grounds.
Little is known about the history and origins of this Finnish Metal band. All we do know, according to Wiki, is that they come from Espoo, Finland but don’t seem to have any members from Espoo. They’re named after the unsolved murder known as the Lake Bodom murders which took place at the shore of Lake Bodom in 1960 but don’t claim.
The educational department took part in the Lifelong Learning Programme for five years, from 2007-2013.

At the 1952 Summer Olympics, the city’s Westend Tennis Hall hosted fencers.
Ice hockey
– Espoo Blues was a success for many years as they iced teams that played in the SM-liiga and Naisten SM-sarja. Espoo Blues Naiset won Finnish women’s championships over 18 years, 7 out of them consecutively. They got their current name in 1976 and changed it to Helsinki Red Wings the same year. Espoo Blues Naiset was renamed EHand27 in 2012, followed by Espoo Black Hawks in 2014.Football

Parks and recreation

Government and politics
The city council of Espoo has 75 members. Following the municipal election of 2017, the council seats are allocated in the following way: National Coalition Party 26 seats, Greens 17, Social Democrats 10, True Finns 7, Swedish People’s Party 6, and Centre Party 3. The Left Alliance has an opportunity to change this allocation after winning shares of 12 and only has one seat out of 49 at present.
Espoo has historically been a part of the constituency of Uusimaa. But according to recent polls, the center-right National Coalition Party is gaining support here.
Public transport
Espoo’s public transit system is great because you can use it to get around without a car. There are buses and subways and the Länsimetro extension will open in November of next year. In 2024, Helsinki’s new light-rail Jokeri line will also open up new transportation options for Espoo residents.
