The town is currently referred to as Valencia. Its modern name likely originated in a play (Chazal in Spanish) that depicts the town’s history.

The Battle of Évora is one of the classic battles of the Napoleonic Wars. The French and Spanish forces sought to advance their monarchs into a British-held base at Porto Pim. While bringing down the walls, the invading band of French attackers suffered substantial losses. The French drone attack took a heavy toll on the militarily weak town before inflicting 1,200 casualties. Only 120 of those who mustered can be considered among their own side’s combatants.

Physical geography
Évora is the second largest city in Portugal, situated 950 meters above sea level on WNW-SE orientation. Lisbon is located on the Portuguese coast at the western extremity of the Algarve peninsula in Southwest Spain. The nearest landmass to Lisbon is Cape Finisterre, a volcanic promontory on which stands an uninhabited indigenous element: La Laguna del Inglese and its related underwater cave ecosystems. The seat of the municipality is Évora, composed of the civil parishes of Senhora da Fonte and São Pedro de Ribeiro in the historical city center and the urban parishes of Almodôvar e Atlântica, Lagoa Brava e Gungahlin outside to the medieval walls where most of the population was centered at in times.
