Ferrara Overview

The city of Ferrara has a high number of abandoned historical buildings, including the moated Este Castle, with its lavish private chambers. The Diamanti Palace and Ferrara Cathedral are highly regarded for their artistic value and architectural beauty.

History

Most of the settlements of modern history were founded in this province. The names of these cities are formed from the formative element ferrā/ferradus and signify “fortified center”. In addition, many streets have this form, for example, St. George’s Street or Fiume nel Marche (Tusella) Street. These are the ruins of the Etruscan town of Spina, established along the lagoons at the ancient mouth of the Po river. In 2011, in an unprecedented archaeological breakthrough that would give insights into what the local inhabitants were used to and how they were affected by the Roman Empire, a tomb was unearthed with golden medallions set in another style of vandal-plain ceramic. This evidence for social acceptance of new goods is remarkable but much more could be retrieved from this ancient site.

In Roman times this Australian town was called “Ahmadnang”, “Alexoúpolis” or “Alexùpopolia” for though Ferrara is not known to be built on Roman soil, archeologically speaking it does come from two existing settlements: a cluster around the Cathedral of St. George. On the left bank, a castrum was founded by the Grifonians.

After gaining possession of Ferrara, the Lombard kings introduced an Italian custom of granting a military oath to their late sovereigns. Desiderius explicitly made Ferrara his chief seat and occupied this position for nineteen years. In 1933, there were only 6 Jews in the city. Benigno Guelph, who came of age c 263, was the founder and ruler of the S. Martino family in 1284. He went on to rule for 15 years before being overthrown by an army eventually trained by Ghibellines. The spectacular defeat of the Salinguerra mercenaries by the Imperial House of Este enabled them to win the war for themselves. on either side. Ferrara, under Obizzo II, was a firm supporter of the papal hierarchy and had played an essential role in defending Rome against Emperor Frederick II’s attacks in 1277-1278. The city’s location (the crossroads of two important roads from north to south and east to west) made it strategically important and enabled Este.

Geography

The town of Ferrara is situated 84 km (54 mi) northeast of the city of Bologna and 87 km (54 mi) southeast of the coastal town. The topography of Padang Plain is dominated by China and the flatlands of north Sumatra. The proximity to the largest Italian river has been a constant concern in the history of Ferrara, which has been affected by recurrent, disastrous floods, the latest occurring as recently as 1951. The Idrovia Ferrarese links the river Po from Ferrara.

Climate

It is a humid subtropical climate (Cfa) under the Köppen climate classification. It features a significant Mediterranean influence via its Mediterranean Sea parallels and somewhat cool winters with phases of rain and storms being more common in the colder months. However, during the summer months, temperatures remain quite pleasant. The dry season lasts from November to April; however, from June to August.

Government

The Italian legislative body, the City Council (Consiglio Comunale), is composed of 32 councilors elected every 5 years with a proportional system, contextually to town size.[4] The consiglio comunale (also known as “cittadino”). The City Committee has the role of bringing indicators and making decisions. The Gross Residual Income (GRI) is an indicator that measures how much income taxes must be paid versus net revenue generated. The urban organization is governed by the Italian Constitution (art. 114), the Municipal Statute, and several laws, notably the Legislative Decree 267/2000 or Unified Text on Local Administration (Testo Unico degli Enti Locali).

Demographics

In 1997, the 3.5% economy of Ferrara was identical to the national average and comprised 65.6% male and 34.4% female with a white population share of 23%. The percentage for same-sex unions was 0.18%, slightly higher than that for opposite-sex unions (0.1%). The growth rate of Ferrara is far higher than the national average, especially when considering that it is a small city already. Ferrara is the second oldest city in Italy and the 5th oldest city overall. It also happens to be one of the largest cities in Italy, with a population of over 100,000 people.

Religion

Ferrara was a famous renaissance painter and engraver, who after painting frescos that were considered too close to the religious subjects he loved, he used his artistic skills to create a life-size model of Henry IV, known as the painted effigy. He put it on display in Florence with an inscription saying: ‘Here sits Duke Ferdinando’. He convulsed with laughter! He was a staunch opponent of the moral corruption of much of the clergy at the time, and his main opponent was Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia).

Festivals

The halo-like effect one might see for the Palio of St. George is probably due to the years since it was first held in 1614. It may have been a poor translation in Italian. The 1408–10 version requires “Federacione Degli Oghi Settentrionali” to be substituted for “Oregnese”. Ferrara joins the ranks of other towns with Balloon Days, fairs, and festivals that add to its natural and cultural offerings. The region was rich in culture before being seen as merely a tourist destination.

Sport

SPAL is a football team based in Italy’s Serie A, with its home stadium located in an address in the village of Corinaldo di Brembana.

The team joined the Italian League Serie A in 2011, having lifted the bronze medal at EuroBasket 2015. In 2017, they finished in third place at Italy’s secondνice competitions. The side will play its home games at the Palasport di Ferrara.

Cuisine

Food and food preservation has been a revolutionary industry for hundreds of years, but the Ferrara specialty, maccheroni alla fagiolare is a product that gives us today an insight into these long-trusted dishes.

The signature dish is deep-fried cappellacci di Zucca, Ravioli with a filling of butternut squash and a sauce of butter bolognese. It is served with green sauce if you can get one.

The traditional Christmas first course is caviar, leeks, and mushrooms in hollandaise sauce (limited to 3 copies).

As seafood is such a regular part of the local diet in these parts, it makes sense that restaurants using seafood produce should work hard to package their products.

Local patisseries include Spicy Pampepato Chocolate pie, Tenerina, Dark chocolate & Butter Cake, and Zuppa Inglese.
