Ferrol is a city in the Province of A Coruña in Galicia, on the Atlantic coast in north-western Spain, in the vicinity of Strabo’s Cape Nerium (modern-day Cape Prior). With a population of 64,785, the city ranks seventh among Galician settlements according to the 2021 census. It is located in the Ferrolterra comarca, the second-largest conurbation in Galicia, with an estimated 640,000 inhabitants in 2016. Eume and Ortegal are situated south and north of Ferrol, respectively.
Few European ports can compare depth, capacity, and safety with the harbor. Forts command a narrow entrance, and a boom can even close the entry.
Since the early Bourbons, the city has been a major naval shipbuilding center, serving as the capital of the Spanish Navy’s Maritime Department of the North. Before that, Ferrol was the most important arsenal in Europe in the 17th century. Navantia Group has some of its central shipbuilding yards in the city today.
In honor of Francisco Franco’s birthplace in 1892, the municipality was officially named “El Ferrol del Caudillo” from September 1938 until December 1982. As well as being the birthplace of Pablo Iglesias, the party’s founder, it was also the birthplace of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE).
As one of the starting points of the Camino de Santiago, the city is home to the English Way path. As pilgrims traversing the English Way must travel 100 km on foot to be officially recognized, Ferrol is the preferred starting point.
The first mention of this settlement, which was at the time called Burum and Arotebrarum Portum, dates back to A.D. 43, in which Pomponius Mela describes a port called Portus Magnus Artabri. The current toponym Ferrol, though, can only be traced back to the Middle Ages; a document of 1087 instances sancto Iuliano de Ferrol, nearby the monastery of San Martín de Jubia (12th century, in Romanesque style), where Ferrol is probably the local evolution of the genitive form of the Latin name Ferreolus; Ferrol was perhaps, in origin, the estate of one Ferreolus. According to its long history and tradition, the Spanish government officially adopted Ferrol in 1982.
Another theory concerning the etymology of Ferrol and its potential origins is Ferro, Latin for iron. These parts, especially from Roman times and earlier, have always been rich in metals, particularly iron, tin, gold, and silver. The old fishing village of Ferrol might have been named after the metal by traders reaching the enclave, in other words: Ferrol, due to the well-guarded port of Ferrol.
As an alternative, the name could derive from the legend of Ferreol, a Breton saint who arrived here amid a chorus of seven sirens on a ship. In another tradition, Ferrol proceeded from farol, alluding to the heraldic figure that appears on the city’s coat of arms. Experts, however, believe that the components of Ferrol date back only to the eighteenth century, and several variants have been used over time without being set following the applicable legislation since the 1990s. Possibly referring to the town of Ferreol, which had a church under the patronage of St. Ferreol, or a combination of two words that could mean ‘port – close,’ ‘landing on pillars’, or ‘the lord of Ferreol.’
It is evident from burial chambers, megalithic monuments, Petroglyphs, and other archaeological finds in this Galician city that prehistoric human settlements existed here. The Phoenicians established several dried and salted cod stations in this area. Their presence, along with the presence of the Ancient Greeks, is well documented by historians like Herodotus, Strabo, and Pomponius Mela. In Roman times, in the 1st century B.C., a fishing port also traded in metals (like Silver, Gold, Tin, and Iron) and wild horses in the Bay of Ferrol neighborhood of Nerium. There is a place called Narahio famous for its medieval castle, which phonetically resembles a bit Strabo’s Nerium modern day Cape Prior in these parts of Iberia dominated in ancient times by the Artabri (or Arrotrebae), giving a name to the Portus Magnus Artabrorum (Form not just by the bay of Ferrol but the three rias of Ferrol, Betanzos, and Corunna). As a first-class natural harbor, Ferrol was then, as it is today, very well guarded, often referred to as “Europe’s best natural port” in history because of its location in the treacherous waters of the Atlantic.
During the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the entire Iberian Peninsula, including Ferrol, was raided by the Vandals and incorporated into the Suebic Kingdom of Galicia; their kingdom was incorporated into the Visigothic Kingdom in 584.
Unlike other parts of the Iberian peninsula, these Christian parts of Iberia saw little change after the collapse of the “Suebic-Visigothic state,” becoming part of the Kingdom of Asturias as early as 750 AD. This period begins with massive shock and shake and the destruction of one state, followed by the humble but firm rebirth of the “Christian Visigothic State” in the mountains and green pastures of the Atlantic North.
In time, Asturias would split into different Christian kingdoms, making these parts change hands between monarchs: Galicia, Leon, and Castile.
This town served as a strategic safe port during the Hundred Years’ War, sided with the House of Trastamara during the Castilian Civil War, and was given to the powerful Andrade family by Henry II in 1371.
During the same period, part of the fortifications at the entrance of the estuary were built due to a fire that destroyed the old medieval settlement in 1568. Back then, the town was more important as a naval base than a safe harbor because it was a Royal Arsenal.
In Ferrol, as in most of Galicia, the climate is humid oceanic with mild temperatures throughout the year, rainy winters, and relatively dry summers, although slightly wetter than the typical Spanish Mediterranean climate.
During the struggle between the Spanish Empire and the British, Ferrol was one of the only enclaves in the world, alongside Cartagena de Indias, that always resisted occupation: mostly because Ferrol was virtually impossible to blockade in the age of sail due to the strong westerly winds…
The city has many attractions, including Museo Naval Ferrol, Lume Boo, and Parque Reina Sofia, making it well worth a visit. A town in Galicia, Spain, Ferrol is located in the region of Galicia. Its many attractions are Museo Naval Ferrol, Lume Boo, and Parque Reina Sofia, all well worth a visit.
