Flensburg Overview

The German state of Schleswig-Holstein includes Flensburg as an independent town (kreisfreie Stadt). The city of Flensburg is located in the north of Schleswig. In Schleswig-Holstein, it is the third largest town after Kiel and Lübeck.

Kiel (86 km (53 miles) south) and Odense (92 km (57 mi) northeast) are the nearest cities. A 7-kilometer (4-mile) drive will bring you to the Danish border in Flensburg’s city center.

Geography

The city of Flensburg lies in the north of Schleswig-Holstein, very close to the Danish border. The northernmost town in Germany is Westerland, on the island of Sylt. At the innermost tip of the Flensburg Firth, an inlet of the Baltic Sea, lies Flensburg. The eastern shore of Flensburg is part of the peninsula of Anglia.

Middle Ages

Flensburg was founded at least 1200 by Danish settlers, which German merchants soon joined at the innermost end of the Flensburg Firth. Upon confirming its town rights in 1284, it quickly became prominent within the Duchy of Schleswig. However, unlike Holstein, Schleswig did not belong to the German Holy Roman Empire. Therefore, Flensburg was not a member of the Hanseatic League, but it maintained contact with this important trading network.

Early modern times

Flensburg became one of the most important trading towns in Scandinavia after the fall of the Hanseatic League in the 16th century. As far away as the Mediterranean, Greenland, and the Caribbean, Flensburg merchants were active. In addition to herring, sugar and whale oil, which were derived from whaling off Greenland, were the essential commodities. This boom period, however, came to an end due to the Thirty Years’ War. As the town became Protestant, it became increasingly German culturally and linguistically, while the surrounding countryside remained firmly Danish.

During the 18th century, Flensburg experienced another boom thanks to the rum trade. Flensburg refined cane sugar was imported from the Danish West Indies (now the U.S. Virgin Islands). In the 19th century, due to industrialization, the town was eventually overtaken by cities such as Copenhagen and Hamburg.

In 1864, Flensburg’s rum was reintegrated into the West Indian trade routes, which moved from the Danish West Indies to Jamaica, a British colony. It was imported from there, blended, and sold throughout Europe. A. H. Johannsen is the only active distillery in Flensburg today.

Danish minority

A Danish minority in Flensburg and its surrounding towns runs its schools, libraries, and Lutheran churches, which are not excluded from the German majority. A sound and healthy symbiosis exist between these two groups. Petuh is a mixed Danish-German language used on ferries.

In Flensburg, there is also a Danish Consulate-General.

There are several “border shops” in Flensburg in Denmark that sell products such as spirits, beer, and candy at lower prices than in Denmark. The prices are lower because the value-added tax is lower, and excise taxes are either lower (such as alcohol) or not applicable (such as sugar). The border shops are currently allowed to sell canned beer to Scandinavian residents without paying deposits as long as the beverage is not consumed in Germany.

Politics

For centuries, two mayors led the town council, one for the north town (St. Marien) and one for the south town (St. Nikolai and St. Johannis). Retiring officials had their successors named by the remaining councilors in such a way that both halves of the city had as many council members as there were council members. The title “Senator” is usually given to these councilors.

Coat of arms

Flensburg’s coat of arms uses gold above blue and silver waves. Rising to the left is a red tower with a blue pointed roof, which two lions of Schleswig and Denmark on top; above the shield is a silver Holsatian nettle leaf. Overlaid on the flag is the coat of arms in color overlaid on blue.

Energy

From 1970 to 1980, a combined heat and power and district heating system was installed in the town. Located in the city, it is owned by the town.

Transport

North of Flensburg runs the A-7 Autobahn, which continues as European route E45 to the Danish border. The municipal area is also crossed by Federal Highways (Bundesstraßen) B 200 and B 199.

A small airport, Flensburg-Schäferhaus, is located west of town as well.

Several bus lines provide local transportation, such as “Aktiv Bus GmbH” and “Allgemeinen Flensburger Autobus Gesellschaft” (AFAG). Within the Flensburg transportation community (Verkehrsgemeinschaft Flensburg), they are all operated under an integrated fare system.

Located south of the Old Town, the current Flensburg station was opened in 1927. Some trains run on the main line to Neumünster and on to Hamburg and Fredericia, including InterCity connections and trains serving Eckernförde and Kiel.

Population

89,504 (2019)

Flensburg is the best time to visit from late June to late August for warm-weather activities.
