Freiburg Overview
Freiburg is known for its temperate climate and reconstructed medieval old town. It city is crisscrossed by picturesque brooks in the Black Forest. In the surrounding highlands, the hiking destination Schlossberg hill is linked to Freiburg by a funicular. This Gothic cathedral Freiburg Minster towers over the central square Münsterplatz and is a popular destination for many people.
History
Freiburg was founded by Konrad and Duke Berthold III of Zähringen in 1120. Historically, Freiburg has been a free market town where merchants could trade without restrictions. Hence its name, which translates to “free (or independent) town.” Frei means to give in Latin, and ‘Burg’ is a German word that means a big city. So this word carries a connotation of quality and well-established roots. Not only did Hamburg tell the story of how it got its name, but it also served as a reminder that these words should not be taken literally. The word means something else entirely, much like most places in Germany.
The town was strategically located at a junction of trade routes, which benefitted the city. In 1200, the population was estimated to be around 6,000 people. Around that time, the Duke of Zähringen Bertold III came to power and began the construction of the Freiburg Münster. It was begun in the Romanesque style but was continued and completed in 1513 by architect Michael Menz. When the rule of Egino V von Urach came over as Freiburg’s count, it was met with distrust from the city council. The council decided to put down its rights for future reference in writing a document. The city of Freiburg was divided in 1794 by a feud between the citizens and their counts, which lasted for 13 years. Egino II raised taxes and sought to limit the citizens’ freedom, which led to the Freiburgers bringing arms and blacksmiths from their homes on the Schloßberg to destroy his castle atop the hill that overlooks the center. The Bishop of Strasbourg, Konrad von Lichtenberg, responded to the furious count’s call. The count led his army with him and within a short amount of time, they found themselves before Freiburg.
According to a historical legend, a butcher named Hauri stabbed the Bishop of Strasbourg with a knife in front of his cathedral. He did this after accusing the cleric of taking from Freiburg something the community considered sacred – their freedom. However, for this victory, he would have to pay for it by collecting 300 marks annually from the citizens until his death. In 1366 the counts of Freiburg tried to take over the city, but citizens eventually went against them and bought their independence. The city turned itself over to the protection of the Habsburgs but retained a large measure of freedom in return. The Habsburgs requested that most nobles die fighting against them at Sempach (1386). The patrician family Schnewlin took control of the city until the guildsmen revolted. At this point in history, guilds became more powerful than the patricians by 1389.
The silver mines in Mount Schauinsland provided an important source of capital for Freiburg. The mine was the first to be discovered, roughly three hundred years before the event, and it was able to mint its coin (the Rappenpfennig) less than one hundred years after that discovery. In 1377 the cities of Freiburg, Basel, Colmar, and Breisach entered into a monetary alliance known as the Geldwäscheverein (Money Laundering Association). This allowed them to exchange goods and make large populations. Only about 8,000-9,000 people were living in Freiburg between the 13th and 14th centuries with about 30 churches and monasteries. In the fourteenth century, silver was dwindling and by 1460 only about 6,000 people lived in the city.

The city of Freiburg has an unusual system of small sewers called Bächle. They are constantly flowing with water diverted from the Dreisam, a river in central Freiburg that provided water to fight fires and feed livestock. Running water is often used for power and cooling in medieval times, and provides a pleasant sound. It offers to cool and helps the air during the summer months. A Bächle is an aquatic rodent that lives in the river that flows through Freiburg. And a Freiburger is a type of cheese served thinly spread on a piece of black bread, hence the nickname: ‘Bobble’, which comes from ‘Bobble’ (a type of cheese) and “Bächle”.
The Augustinerplatz has been around for centuries in Freiburg. It was known as the location of an Augustinian monastery and became a museum in 1921. Today, it’s used by young people from downtown as a social space. Feierling has a lot of good restaurants and bars, including the local brewery that has a Biergarten. Most importantly, the Köppen climate classification describes its climate as oceanic (Cfb). This is due to the mean temperatures in July and August coming in just under 22 degrees Celsius. In addition, marine features are limited because of this climatic region’s colder interior. As a result, summers in Karlsruhe have a significant subtropical influence and are quite warm. Winters in Karlsruhe can be cold with frost but they’re not as frequent. But, more year-round rain occurs in the Rhine River than in the Black Forest. Kaiserstuhl is a mountain range in the Rhine valley in southern Germany. It is a part of the Black Forest and is one of the warmest places in Germany.
Government
Freiburg is known as an “eco-city”. It has attracted the Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz, solar industries, and research; the Greens have a strong presence in the area and councilors are concentrating on several of their policies that strive to protect citizens from harmful effects of radiation. The newly built neighborhoods of Vauban and Rieselfeld in Freiburg are driven by sustainability, to reduce the environmental footprint and preserve their beautiful view. The citizens of Freiburg are known to use bicycles more often than cars, but they also like recycling.
Dieter Salomon was the first member of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen to hold an office in a city with more than 100,000 inhabitants and he served as mayor of Frankfurt between 2002 and 2018.
Martin Horn, an independent candidate formerly associated with the SPD and supported by the SPD and FDP, became mayor of Freiburg in May 2018. He received 34.7% in the first round of voting and 44.2% in the second (Weiss). To the surprise of many, Trump is declaring that he has received more love in the last two weeks after his victory than ever before.
The Freiburg city council has had a long history of caring about the environment and sustainability. Notably, they even had a resolution passed in 1995 that allowed construction only of “low energy” buildings on municipal land. They helped facilitate the creation of new low-energy buildings with specifications to match. When combined with everything else on the roof, solar panels are a great way to power your home. Freiburg has a pedestrian zone that entirely bans cars in the city center. The public transport system is operated by VAG Freiburg, which is also responsible for Freiburg’s trams. The tram network is quite popular in the city as the tickets are cheap and its service extends over a large area. Furthermore, to avail of this service, you can use your ticket on the public transport network too. The team is so well connected that 70% of the population lives within 500m of a stop. The ride time is less than decades ago and every 7-8 mins there’s a tram just waiting for you to hop on.
Freiburg is close to the main Frankfurt am Main-Basel railway line as well as other less populated regions of Germany. Freiburg offers tourists and locals easy access to nearby cities, including Munich, Berlin, Zurich, Geneva, and more! Other railway lines from east to west – the Black Forest, Breisgau. The line to Breisach is a remaining piece of a rail link between Freiburg and Colmar that was interrupted in 1945 when the bridge over the Rhine was destroyed. The bridge is still not replaced.
The city is also served by a Frankfurt-Basel A5 motorway.
EuroAirport Freiburg 2 is located in France near the border of both Germany and Switzerland, about 47 miles from Freiburg. The Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden Airport is about 100km north of Freiburg, and it’s also served by several airlines. There are a few international airports nearby that are considered to be larger than this one like Stuttgart (200 km from here), Frankfurt/Main (260 km from here), and Munich (430 km from here). The nearby Flugplatz Freiburg is a small airfield in the Messe, Freiburg district. It lacks commercial service and is used by private citizens.

Freiburg is a town in the German state of Baden-Württemberg and it is home to two football teams. Freiburger FC was the German champion in 1907 and SC Freiburg has been playing in the top tier league since 1978. The 2016 season saw both football clubs get promoted. The club became generally known in Germany for its steady staffing policy. They let their coach and presidents come and go, but the club’s support always stayed the same. A longtime coach was Volker Finke (1991-2007) and his initiative for the football school of the club went on after his death in 2007. SC Freiburg celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2004 and Christian Streich became coach in December 2011. They recently won the Women’s Bundesliga, making this one of the club’s most successful seasons ever!
Freiburg also has the EHC Freiburg ice hockey team, which plays at the Franz-Siegel Halle. In the season 2003/2004, they played in the DEL. They currently play in 2018/19 and compete for a place among Europe’s top leagues.
A well-known athletic squad of the RC Freiburg Rugby union team competes in a league in the south of Germany. The home ground of the club, which is the only rugby sports field in this wider area, is located there.
Then there is the volleyball men’s team of the FT 1844 Freiburg, which has been playing in the 2nd Bundesliga since 2001, and the handball women’s team of the HSG Freiburg, which has been existing in Germany’s top league for 3rd-tier Women’s Handball League.
USC Freiburg represents Freiburg in women’s basketball. In the 2005/2006 season, they came in second, and in the 2006/2007 season, they were fourth. The men’s team of USC is quite a large football club in Germany. They played their last season in the second-tier Bundesliga, while another German team had played their last season in the first division back in 1998/99. Currently, Men’s Team SC Freiburg plays their first-division games during the 2018/2019 season, and Women’s Team USC.

Freiburg Minster
Freiburg’s Münster cathedral would take another 300 years to complete after construction began in the 13th century. It is best known for surviving World War II, with only minor damage despite the destruction around Münsterplatz.
Münsterplatz
The cobblestone pedestrian square is complete with historic monuments and sells a variety of local produce every day of the week. Even though it had been nearly flattened by bombs in 1944, the German square in Potsdam escaped almost completely unscathed and among the few buildings to survive intact was the Wentzingerhaus on its southern margins.
Historical Merchants’ Hall
Münsterplatz is the main street in the city of Münster and it contains a few impressive buildings – one of which, in particular, houses the Renaissance-style Schatzkammer. Schwabentor
The Medieval gate close to the Dreisam River is one of the oldest in Freiburg, dating back to the middle of the 12th century. It’s three stories high, built from red sandstone, and was completed in 1307-1310.
Schlossberg
Throughout its long history, Schlossberg has had walls and fortifications around it that have served a protective function. Some structures are still standing and you can take a self-guided tour of these medieval remnants. One of the main draws now is a funicular railway that was recently opened. The lift from the foot to the top takes about three minutes.
Rathäuser
Freiburg’s new and old town halls are in the same compound at Rathausplatz. The Old Town Hall is on the north side of the street and was built in 1558.
Martinstor
The older of the two city gates is on the southwest side of the Old Town and has stood here in some form since 1202. The first record of Martinstor is from 1238, but analysis of its timbers has shown they’re quite old.
Haus Zum Walfisch (Whale House)
This elegant early Renaissance house was ordered by Jakob Villinger von Schönenberg, a person who was the Grand Treasurer to the Holy Roman Emperor. The house goes back to the 1510s and over the next hundred years accommodated some important personalities.
