Fuenlabrada Overview

A city and municipality of Spain, Fuenlabrada is part of the Community of Madrid. It is the fourth most populous municipality in the region, with a population of 193,586 as of 2018.

Placename

Fuenlabrada originates from the contraction Fuente Labrada, Spanish for “carved fountain.”

Geography

One of the highest points in the municipality is located on a hill northwest of the city center (721 meters above sea level). Several areas of the municipality (slightly over 600 meters above sea level) are at the lowest altitudes, such as the East, past the A-42 near Getafe.

The southeast of the municipality is covered by the Polígono Cobo Calleja, a significant economic area dominated by wholesale Chinese imports (considered the biggest in Europe in this regard).

Loranca (size 203.6 ha) is a residential area west of Móstoles, halfway between the central urban nucleus and Loranca.

An important hydrographic feature is the Arroyo Culebro, a tributary of the Manzanares. However, other parts of the municipality (including the Arroyo de Fregacedos) are part of the Guadarrama catchment.

History

Humans likely lived in this area during the Paleolithic and Bronze Ages (Casas del Cerro). Loranca, Albas, and Fregacedos are believed to be among the settlements that existed during the Upper Middle Ages in the current municipal area.

According to some estimates, Fuenlabrada was founded around the middle of the 14th century by residents of nearby Loranca, Albas, and Fregacedos villages, which were simultaneously depopulated. During Philip II’s reign, during the Topographic Relations of Philip II, the first mention of Fuenlabrada, which was part of the Land of Madrid at the beginning of the 16th century, appeared in the Topographic Relations of Philip II. During the second half of the 18th century, a quarter of the village’s population disappeared.

While agriculture continued to dominate the economy, rosquillas and buns made in the municipality became renowned among the surrounding towns by the end of the 19th century. In the 1940s and 1950s, the General Directorate of Devastated Regions completed some building works in Fuenlabrada following the 1936-1939 Civil War, which caused severe damage to some parts.

From 1970 to 1980, the population grew by 65,181, Spain’s most significant relative increase, from 7,369 to 65,181. During the following decades, demographic growth continued.

It has been a stronghold of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) since the 1979 municipal elections and is part of the “red belt” of Madrid.

Transport

  • Roads – Several highways link the city, including the M-50, A-42, M-506, M-407, and M-409. Depending on the direction of travel, the M-413 or M-405 connects it to the neighboring towns of Humanes de Madrid and Moraleja de Enmedio.
  • Metro – Through the Madrid Metro line 12 (also known as Metrosur), Fuenlabrada is well connected to Madrid, Móstoles, Getafe, Alcorcón, and Leganés, including five stations: Loranca, Hospital de Fuenlabrada, Parque Europa, Fuenlabrada Central (transfer with Fuenlabrada Cercan*as station) and Park of the States.
  • Commuter train – Fuenlabrada is connected to Madrid via the Cercanías Madrid line C-5, which has two stations: Fuenlabrada (Transfer with Fuenlabrada Central metro station) and La Serna.

Demography

Many young workers came to Fuenlabrada in the 1980s looking for affordable housing, mostly from the capital city and other rural areas (mainly Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, Andalusia, and Galicia). A population of 18,442 had already been reached by 1975. Many foreign workers have also established themselves in the city, mainly from Latin America, Africa, the Maghreb, China, and Romania.

  • Higher education – There is a secondary campus of the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (URJC) in the city, which houses faculties for communication sciences, telecommunications engineering, tourism, and business administration.

Sports

In addition to Baloncesto Fuenlabrada, the city is home to several renowned basketball clubs that have played in the top-tier divisions of Spanish basketball for many years. Fernando Martin sports center has a capacity of 5,700 people, where the team plays its home games.

A local football team, C.F. Fuenlabrada, plays in Segunda División, the second tier of the Spanish league. During the 2011-2012 season, they played their home games at the Estadio Fernando Torres, which the footballer’s parents inaugurated on 1 September 2011. A total of 7,500 people can be accommodated in the stadium.

During the 1991/1992 season, Partizan had to play abroad as the host team due to the war in Croatia. They became champions of the old continent that season after “hosting” in Fuenlabrada, a Madrid suburb.
