Furth Overview
Fürth is a city in the northern part of Germany. It lies about 7 miles or 11 km from Nuremberg in Middle Franconia, which is one of the administrative districts of Bavaria.
Fürth is one of 23 “major centers” in Bavaria. It’s joined with 4 other smaller areas to form the “Middle Franconian Conurbation,” which is one of the 11 metropolitan regions in Germany and has many cities and towns within it.
Geography
The historic center of the town is to the east and south of the rivers Rednitz and Pegnitz, which join to form the Regnitz. To the northwest of this area is Fürth’s Old Town. On the far side of Fürth, on a chunk of land across from New Town, is a municipal area with schools and office buildings. Along the same latitude as Fürth, but just to the east, is the city of Nuremberg. In this area, you’ll find many market gardens that are right on or very near the outskirts of Fürth’s urban district. To the south of the town are wide roads and the canal. There are also meadows in this area.
History
Fürth was founded in what is now known as Franconia; a region of Bavaria, Germany. The document from 1 November 1007 mentioned above is the first time we can confirm what the city looked like historically. Fürth is a city in northern Bavaria with a population of around 130,000. The city was granted market privileges in 1024 under Heinrich III and they were later lost to the neighboring city Nuremberg during another era. From 1062 onward, Fürth began to experience a larger town. It was granted the right to have a market as well by then, while Nuremberg had already grown in prominence.
Throughout the following centuries, the town was under varying authority. The Bishop of Bamberg ruled during one period, while the Principality of Ansbach ruled a few times. The City of Nuremberg did not experience too many changes, but they sometimes received territory as gifts from other royal sources. It’s estimated that the population was still only between 1000-2000 people in 1600.
In the Thirty Years War, Fürtha was almost destroyed by fire and military action. It took place in September 1632 in Fürth, Germany.
The first train in Germany happened in 1835, opening up a new method of transportation.
Throughout the Cold War, the city of Fürth had a higher NATO presence than anywhere else due to its proximity to both Czechoslovakia and East Germany.
Population development
Fürth became too congested and residents struggled to accommodate the large number of refugees who came for protection from the Thirty Year War‘s epidemic. The population then began to grow once more because there were no major epidemics or wars in which the Fürth had to participate. Croatian soldiers set fire to Fürth in 1634, causing it to burn for several days and almost destroying it. At the end of the war, only a mere 800 people were left. By 1685, Reformed Christians from France, or Huguenots, had settled in Fürth. By 1700 the city had been restored and its population had reached about 6000.
Rapid population growth has helped Fürth expand over the years. These rapid population increases have been witnessed by each succeeding generation of the town. In 1800 there was just a small town of 12,000 with this multiplying to 4 times to 47,000 in 1895 and more than 100,000 people in 1950. The Bavarian population increased by 0.5% in 2005, making it the highest increase of any year on record. Fürth is the second largest town in Middle Franconia and the seventh largest in Bavaria. Currently, 18% of people living here are of foreign descent.

Nature
“Nature Trail for Urban Ecology” is a project established in 1999 and expanded in 2003 to include a second path. It begins at the Stadthalle underground railway station. Along the nature trail, visitors can learn about the different flora and fauna habitats. These are explained in detail, including the importance of the churchyard at St. Michael’s Church, the municipal cemetery, and the Scherbsgraben stream. The trail references some of the problems associated with environmental regulations, such as river regulation.

The Gustav-Adolf natural spring, near Weikershof, was restored in 2000 and a pavilion was erected. The pool used to be fed by the 19 °C (66 °F) water but has since been closed as it no longer supplies enough water.
Administration
Until 1806, Fürth was governed by the representative of the Diocese of Bamberg. In 1808, Bavaria took full control of Fürth along with other areas in southern Germany. That year, it marked its “class II” city status and had direct authority from Bavaria. From 1818, Fürth established itself as a “class I” city – meaning it was responsible for its administration.
Mr. Thomas Jung (SPD) was sworn in as the first mayor of the city of Hamburg on January 22nd, 2002.
Economy and infrastructure
Fürth unemployment is as of July 2019, 2.9%. It is a major industrial center in the Main-Franconian region and has many toy-makers who employ hundreds of people in the area. The range of small, too large toy companies can produce a variety of merchandise, with high-quality standards.
Historically, the beer brewed in Fürth was important for the local economy, until a tornado destroyed several of the buildings and some of the brewing capabilities. The latest development is that there are fewer big breweries and more small ones, with Caffé Brau as one example.
Helped by the economic crisis of 2008, Quelle, which had lost customer revenue was forced to file for bankruptcy.
Fürth is also a center of solar technology. A ground-based plant in Atzenhof located on a former lignite mine site feeds two megawatts of electricity into the grid, using photovoltaic technology.
A new pumping station was built in 2003 near the confluence of the Pegnitz and Rednitz rivers. It provides artificial irrigation to the Knoblauchsland market garden area, which is a thriving business in the northeast part of the city that sells produce year-round.

There are 22 elementary schools in Fürth. There are two “commercial” schools: the Hans Böckler School and the Leopold Ullstein School. Several private independent schools were later merged into one institution, including the Freie Waldor.

Its economy had been revitalized by several high-tech firms, making it a flourishing university town.
