Galați is located in southeastern Romania. Its coordinates are latitude 45 ° 27’N, 28 ° 02’E. It has an area of 246.4 sq km (95.1 sq mi). Galati is located south of the Moldavian Plateau, at the junction of the Siret River and the Prut River, 80km east of the Black Sea. Brăila, the nearest city to Galați, is situated 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) south and lies on three levels, the lowest of which you can see while entering “Valley City.” The other two, in the shape of a fan, have high elevations of 20–25 meters and 40 meters, respectively. The site of the old town is at a higher point (20-25m) while the city center is more towards 40m. The Danube is considered the lifeblood of Galați. The Danube is the 2nd longest European river (2,850 km or 1,770 mi) and has an average flow of 6,199 cubic meters (218,900 cu ft) per second. Once the Siret River has joined with the Danube, the overall flow is 210 cubic meters per second (7,400 cu ft/s). After the Prut River joins with it, the flow becomes 86 cubic meters per second (3,000 cu ft/s). The Danube river has significant variations in flow depending on the season. The maximum water flow can reach 18,000-19,000 m3/s (640,000-670,000 cu ft/s), while the minimum is found during summer when there are around 2,450 m3/s (87,000 cu ft/s).
