Gdansk Overview

The city of Gdańsk (Danzig in German) is a port city on the Baltic coast of Poland. Long Market is the center of Main Town. It was rebuilt after a WWII bomb destroyed everything, but in the process became a colorful place with lots of shops and restaurants. Nearby is Neptune Fountain, built over 400 years ago and serves as a city symbol. Gdańsk is also a center for engagement with the modern world, as boutique shops sell contemporary jewelry made from amber.

Origin

Gdania is the river that runs through Gdańsk. There are several different theories as to why its name was chosen, but most believe it was derived from the word “Godania,” which means “place on the Motlawa.”

Linguists argue that the name stems from the Proto-Slavic adjective/prefix gъd-, which meant wet or moist, with the addition of the morpheme ń/ni and the suffix -sc. Hagen and Celts believed it was used to describe Slavs who had been soaked in water, but this hypothesis is now hotly contested. Others have said that the name evolved from the expression Ku Dansk, which means “to/towards Denmark.”

Ancient history

The oldest evidence of a settlement on the lands of Gdańsk came from the Bronze Age (estimated to be from 2500-1700 BC). The first evidence of permanent settlement on the shore dates back to the 9th century when a mighty stream flowed into the Vistula Lagoon. At that time, most of the land held by free individuals was agricultural and fishing-dependent. In the 10th century, Poland was an important trade center. It came to a standstill when King Mieszko I took over the region in c. 975 and started calling it his own country.

Gdańsk was thought to be the first city started by rebuilding in Poland, as it has been settled since 997. The earliest written record confirms this tradition by mentioning Saint Adalbert baptizing the inhabitants of Gdanska. Sources don’t exist for the 10th and 11th centuries. The city celebrated its millennial anniversary in 1997 based on the date of Adalbert’s Vita.

Archaeological evidence for the town’s origins was retrieved mainly after World War II had laid 90% of the city center in ruins. This then allowed archaeologists to excavate, enabling new evidence to be discovered. The oldest seventeen settlement levels are dated to between 980-1308, and Mieszko I is thought to have erected a stronghold on the site in the 980s. The Polish state under the control of the Piast dynasty was thus connected with Ancient Trade routes by this construction. Archaeologists have discovered the city’s archeological ruins from the 10th century, indicating that it was inhabited.

Climate

Gdańsk has a climate with both oceanic and continental influences. According to some categorizations, the Gdansk climate is considered Oceanic Climate (Cfb), while others classify it as belonging to the Continental climate zone (Dfb). It depends on whether the mean reference temperature for the coldest winter month is set at -3 °C (27 °F) or 0 °C (32 °F). Depending on your local climate, that might make a difference. Some specific years do not get much precipitation in the winter, while other years drop vast amounts of snow and frost in the summer as well. This is an indication of significant continental differences. However, seasonal extremes aren’t as pronounced as those seen in inland Poland.

Population

582,205 (2017)

Economy

The city’s industrial manufacturing mainly focuses on naval, petrochemical, and chemical industries and vegetable processing. Technology has been on the rise in recent years. Initiatives such as electronics, telecommunications, I.T. engineering, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals are seeing high use and a growing number of approvals. Amber processing is an essential part of the economy along the Baltic coast, as the majority of amber deposits in the world are found here. Summertime is an excellent time for Pomeranians and their summer destination of Gdańsk on the Baltic coast. Millions of Polish and other European tourists flock to the beaches in this region, which are also one of Poland’s major tourist destinations.

Sports

There are many sports teams in the Gdańsk and Tricity area people play, whether they’re amateurs or professionals. Whether in schools or on the city streets, everyone shares this part of daily life.

Poland’s top football club is Lechia Gdańsk. Founded in 1945 and playing in the Ekstraklasa, Poland’s top division, they’re regularly ranked as one of Europe’s best clubs. They have the best stadium of any country in the world and are currently hosting some of the essential goals in European Football. Other notable football (soccer) clubs are Gedania 1922 Gdańsk and SKS Stoczniowiec Gdańsk, both of which played in the second tier in the past.

Politics and local government

Gdańsk is a significant center of regional and national life in Poland. Poland has a space agency and offices for energy. Poland’s space agency is connected to the institutions that control aspects of natural resources like energy, water, and air. There’s a lot of code within the Civil Aviation Authority, Office of Rail Transport, and Office of Competition and Consumer Protection. And different institutions exceed national boundaries, looking to better coordinate with each other. The Court of Appeals, the Regional Public Prosecutor’s Office, and the branch of the Institute of National Remembrance. Pomeranian is the capital of Poland and the seat of Poland’s institutional and gazetted offices. It has served as a seat for numerous metropolises, including serving as the Pomeranian Voivodeship office, Sejmik, and Marshal’s Office.

15 Best Things to Do in Gdańsk (Poland)

  1. Trakt Królewski (Royal Way)

    – To cut through the Polish city of Gdańsk, leave your car at one of the two city gates near the Motlawa River and walk on this bike path by taking a horizontal route east. If you see anything you’re interested in, turn to visit it.
  2. St Mary’s Church

    – The Gothic church is among the three largest brick-built churches and has a volume of up to 190,000 cubic meters. It was built during the 14th century.
  3. Neptune’s Fountain

    – Near the Artus Court on Long Market is an enduring symbol of Gdańsk. It is a fountain by a Mannerism sculpture that was erected in bronze but was not installed for another 18 years.
  4. Golden House

    – Staying on the Long Market in Artus Court, two doors to the right of the most beautiful building in town, is a building often lauded as one of the most beautiful houses in all of Rhone. It’s not easy to disagree when you glimpse the elegant facade.
  5. Main Town Hall

    – In the middle of the 16th century, Dutch architects drew up a plan for a magnificent Main Town Hall and had it furnished with sumptuous rooms. The Historical Museum manages its interior and is still used to this day.
  6. Ulica Mariacka (St Mary’s Street)

    – Ulica Mariacka is a cobblestone street with small shops and houses. It forms an east-west axis and connects to St. Mary’s Church and the Morals River.
  7. Gdańsk Crane

  8. Dougie Pobrzeze (Long Embankment)

    – Although the original location of the port was in the mouth of the Dead Vistula River, a significant amount of foreign vessels would dock here because they encountered difficulties while navigating Galicia’s coastline and overhung rivers. Some streets still have water gates that protect them, which are also crucial to the town.
  9. Museum of the Second World War

  12. Oliwa Cathedral

    – The church starkly contrasts the surrounding area with its white walls and bright red-orange roof. The Renaissance style is evident in the basilica, which was so damaged by violence that only its ground floor remains.

  14. Amber Museum

    – That Prison Tower dwarfs the Golden Gate and has a museum about Gdańsk’s relationship with this gemstone. It’s rich in amber artwork from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries and a beautiful collection of contemporary designs for those seeking more artistic pieces.
  15. Jelitkowo Beach

    – The closest beach is about a 1.5-hour drive from Warsaw and is a part of the Jelitkowo district. The ground at this beach is clean, and several parks offer access to scenic walks and hikes along the coastline for several kilometers westwards.
