Getxo Overview
There is a town called Getxo located in the autonomous Basque Country region of Spain, in the province of Biscay. 77,946 people are living in this part of Greater Bilbao (2019). In addition to being the third largest municipality in Biscay, Getxo is primarily an affluent residential area.
History
Getxo (formerly spelled Guecho) was originally a rural area, including a large beach at the mouth of the Estuary of Bilbao, centered around Algorta, a small fishing village. In Spanish, the parish council met at the church of Santa Maria de Guecho (Basque: Getxoko Andra Mari), which is located near the headland of Punta Galea.
There is an oak with two cauldrons chained to its branches on the coat of arms, and the motto is Kaltea Dagianak Bizarra Lepoan (Basque for “Who does evil, the beard at the back”). A proverb implies that the evil-doers fear revenge if they look back at their actions.
Industrialization transformed some areas of Getxo into bourgeois residential regions of the 19th century. A residential area called Neguri, which means “Winter Town” in Basque, was created. With the construction of Areeta in Basque and Las Arenas (Spanish for “The Sands”) around the church of Saint Nicholas (San Nicolás) and the canalization of the Firth, the village of Algorta grew around the beach. There developed in Areeta / Las Arenas, on the other side of the road to Bilbao, a working-class district called Erromo, similar to the one that grew in Neguri: Neguri Langile. It was not until the 20th century that urban development reached the rural areas of Getxoko Andra Mari.
During the last few decades of the 20th century, Getxo and the surrounding area known as Uribe-Kosta experienced rapid growth. Over 83,000 people live there, with only 50,000 residents in the early 1980s. As well as Leioa, Berango, and Sopelana, its surrounding villages have seen their populations multiply.
Several ETA attacks were carried out in Getxo during the Basque Conflict. Among the deadliest was an ambush in October 1978, which killed three civil guards, and a car bomb attack on May 19, 2008. The organization’s activists were born in Getxo, including Arkaitz Goikoetxea.
Geography
The town is located 14 kilometers (8 miles) north of Bilbao in the province and historical territory of Biscay, in the Basque Country, in the north of Spain. The city covers a total area of 11.64 square kilometers (4.49 square miles). As well as Sopelana, Berango, and Leioa are within its borders in the east, Portugalete is within its boundaries in the south, and the Bay of the Cove lies within its borders in the west.
Transport and tourism
Using the city’s underground Metro Bilbao, which has six stations along the neighborhoods (Areeta, Gobela, Neguri, Aiboa, Algorta, Bideazabal, and Ibarbengoa), you can travel to Getxo from Bilbao. In addition to the Vizcaya Bridge transporter bridge, Getxo is accessible via regular fluvial transport over the Estuary of Bilbao from Portugalete. From Getxo’s town center, the Bilbao Airport is in Loiu, twenty minutes away.
There are four beaches in Getxo, as well as easy access to Bilbao, which is the regional economic capital. Several sports complexes (both public and private) are located in the area, including a yacht harbor and a golf course. The semi-autonomous Department of Culture regularly organizes cultural events, including international jazz, blues, and folk festivals.

A rowing club in Getxo organizes a regatta of trainers every year called the Flag of Getxo. Also, other annual trainer competitions, such as the Flag of Santurtzi, the Flag of Getxo, and the Grand Prix of Nervión, occur partially in Getxo waters.
Several association football clubs are located in Getxo. Among the most successful is Arenas Club de Getxo football, which plays in Segunda División B. However, they also participated in the first-ever Spanish national football league season, stood seven seasons in its First Division, and won the 1919 Copa del Rey.
A former Danish rugby international played for Getxo Rugby Taldea (currently Getxo Artea), the local rugby team.
In addition to golf, Getxo has clubs for traditional Basque sports, Basque pelota, skating, hitch-hiking, cycling, sailing, basketball, surfing, fishing, athletics, triathlon, rhythmic gymnastics, handball, futsal, chess, tennis, paddle tennis, horseback riding, hockey, boxing, and other sports.
