Gijon Overview
Spanish city Gijón is located on the coast of northern Spain. The old fishermen’s quarter of Cimadevilla is famous for its maritime heritage. Sculptures and a clifftop park can be found on Santa Catalina hill. An international art center is in the Revillagigedo Palace, built in the 18th century. This building is adjacent to the Collegiate Church of San Juan Bautista, now a concert hall. Clock Tower, with a museum about the city, dates back to the 16th century.
Located in the region’s center, Gijón is part of a large metropolitan area with 20 councils and a dense network of roads, highways, and railways, making it Spain’s seventh-largest metropolitan area.
Etymology
Early medieval texts mention the name “Gigia,” derived from the same Greek and Latin term “gigias,” meaning “giant,” both referring to the Greek mythological giant Gigas. In medieval times, “Gigia” referred to the ancient Roman wall built on the peninsula of the Cimavilla neighborhood of Gijón. As a compound Latin term, the wall was called “Gegionem” by the Romans and is either “geg-ionem,” meaning “giantness/giant,” “gegi-onem,” meaning “concrete giant,” or “gegio-nem,” meaning “giant end.” It is likely that the use of the term “giant” refers either to the large physical stature of the pre-Germanic Astur peoples or to the wall’s size.
History
There are several tumuli and neolithic dolmens on Monte Deva and Monte Areo, the first evidence of the human presence in Gijón. The dolmens were supposedly built around 5000 BC, according to their discovery in 1990.
The first apparent settlement (Noega) was discovered in Campa Torres, and there is evidence that it originated between the 6th and 5th centuries B.C. The Astures (Cirrnigos) initially inhabited the area and then Romanized. With the construction of the Gegionem, the Roman wall in the Cimavilla peninsula gradually abandoned Noriega.
It is impossible to trace the invasions of barbarian tribes during the 5th and 6th centuries. During the 7th century, Sisebut, king of the Visigoths, controlled the region. The Roman villa of Vranes was one of the first Christian worship places during this period.
For a short period between 713 and 718 or 722, Gijón was the capital of Muslim territories on the Cantabric Sea. It is said that the Asturians won the Battle of Covadonga in 722, marking the Reconquista’s beginning. Pelagius led the Asturian forces, which would lead to the establishment of the Kingdom of Asturias.
Gijón was only briefly mentioned in some documents until 1270, and no reliable references can be found. It was given Puebla status by Alfonso X of Castile this year, and San Vicente de Oviedo Monastery contains this documentation.
Location
At an altitude of 513 m (1,683 ft) at Picu Samartin and 672 m (2,205 ft) at Pea de Los Cuatro Jueces, the city is on the coast of central Asturias, bordered by Carrero on the west, Villaviciosa on the east, and Siero and Llanera on the south.
Located on the Asturian coast, the city is characterized by the peninsula of Cimavilla (the original settlement) that separates the beach of San Lorenzo and the surrounding neighborhoods to the east from the shores of Poniente and Arbeyal, the shipyards, and the recreational port and the Port of El Musel to the west. In addition to Oviedo and Avilés, it is close to the other main cities in Asturias.
Climate
Gijón has a temperate oceanic climate (Köppen climate classification Cfb) characteristic of the Atlantic coast of Spain, with cool summers and wet and mostly mild winters. Due to the onshore flow from the Atlantic Ocean, the summer and winter climates are calm and soft, with few severe heat events and freezing temperatures. Only 6.4°C separates the record August temperature from the all-time January temperature, which illustrates the narrow temperature range. Compared to other locations on the Atlantic in the country, it is drier and wetter than the Spanish standard. Throughout the year, there is a high level of humidity.
Demography
The council had 275,274 residents in 2013, including 145,290 women and 129,984 men. Two hundred sixty thousand nine hundred forty-four people live in the parish of Gijón.
The municipal population doubled between the 1960s and 1980s when it overgrew, and growth stagnated in the 1990s, reflecting a slower national economy. The number of people in Asturias increased again at the turn of the 21st century due to immigration from other Asturias councils and abroad.
Culture
Gijón is the cultural center of Asturias. The city’s cultural activities increase in the summer, especially during the Assumption Festival with parties, concerts, and plays. Sports

A significant basketball club in the city is Circulo Gijón, which plays in the third tier of Spanish basketball. In 2009, Gijón Basketball folded after playing four seasons in Liga ACB, an essential European league.

At the end of Francoism, when the town’s economy began to expand rapidly, employment in the tertiary sector began to increase along with the city’s population, which reached 277,897 by 2007 in Gijón proper, and approximately 380,000 in the Gijón aggregation as a whole.
Many of the local businesses are located around the port. Tourism, steel (Arcelor), metallurgy, livestock rearing, and fishing constitute most of the economy aside from port-related activities.
