In northern Catalonia, Spain, Girona sits at the confluence of four rivers: the Ter, the Onyar, the Galligants, and the Güell. In 2020, the official population of Girona-Salt was 103,369, but the city’s estimated population is about 156,400. In addition to being the province’s capital of the same name, Girona is also the capital of the Gironès region and the Girona Vegueria. Many parts of the old quarter of Girona have been preserved, making it a popular tourist destination and a filming location (e.g., Game of Thrones). Located 99 km northeast of Barcelona, the city has a population of 62,500.
Girona was the ancient Gerunda, a city of the Ausetani populated by the first Iberians in history. Gerunda, which the Romans later built, was the name given to the citadel. Before being conquered by the Moors in 715, Girona was ruled by the Visigoths. It became one of the 14 original counties of Catalonia when Charlemagne reconquered it in 785. The Moors sacked it four times in 827, 842, 845, and 935. The County of Barcelona was created in 878 by Wilfred the Hairy, who incorporated Girona into it.
As early as the 11th century, Alfonso II of Aragon and I of Barcelona established Girona as a city. Peter III of Aragon gave his firstborn son John the title of Duke in 1351, transforming the ancient county into a duchy within the Principality of Catalonia. As a result, King Ferdinand I gave Prince Alfonso of Girona the title of Prince of Girona in 1414. The title is currently held by Princess Leonor of Asturias, the second woman to hold the title since the 16th century.
Approximately 885 is the earliest documented date of a Jewish community in Girona. As one of Europe’s most critical Kabbalistic schools, Girona had a flourishing Jewish community in the 12th century. As Great Rabbi of Catalonia, Moshe ben Nahman Gerondi (Nahmanides or Ramban), the Rabbi of Girona, was appointed. In 1492, when the Catholic Monarchs outlawed Judaism throughout Spain and gave Jews the option of conversion or exile (see Alhambra Decree), the Jewish community of Girona ended. Before that time, the Jewish cemetery was beside the road to France, just north of the old town near the mountain Montjuc, or the hill of the Jews in medieval Catalan.
The Köppen climate classification for Girona is humid subtropical (Cfa), with mild winters and hot summers. Winter temperatures are usually between 8 and 15 degrees Celsius; however, they can occasionally drop below 2 degrees Celsius (28 degrees Fahrenheit). During the summer, maximum temperatures typically range from 27°C to 37°C (81°F to 99°F). Despite being evenly distributed throughout the year, spring (April–May) and autumn (September–November) are when rainfall is most likely to occur. In July, the weather is driest. Many thunderstorms occur during the summer, especially in the northern hemisphere.
Various non-European professional cyclists have called Girona home during the professional cycling season, as illustrated in the book by Michael Barry, written during his time with the US Postal Service cycling team. It is common for cyclists to do their training rides outside the city in between races because the terrain provides excellent training opportunities.
During the Spring of 1997, Marty Jemison, Tyler Hamilton, and George Hincapie moved to Girona as US Postal Service Professional Cycling Team members. This year, American cyclists began living in Girona and meeting for training rides at the Pont de Pedra. Several well-known professional cyclists moved to the city later on, including Lance Armstrong.
A large number of people also enjoy playing football. A football club in Girona, Girona F.C., was promoted to La Liga last year. There is a stadium named Estadi Montilivi for the club.
A roller hockey team from the city, GEiEG, competes in the main league OK Liga and is one of the best in Spain.
In addition to the Jaume Vicens Vives Secondary School, the city is home to Universitat de Girona (University of Girona).
There is an Autopista AP-7 and an Autopista N-II in the town. In addition to its location on the coast, the city provides access to the local road network and inland routes towards the Pyrenees.
Buses operated by private companies provide comprehensive urban transportation in the city. Other towns within Girona province are also served, as are long-distance buses.
At the new railway station west of the Old Town, Girona is served by trains. Conventional trains are available from Barcelona to Portbou and to the French border.
The town has a significant airport, Girona-Costa Brava, which is 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the city’s center. Due to Ryanair choosing it as one of their European hubs, it grew tremendously, but the number of flights shrank again after they moved most of them to Barcelona El Prat.
The Arab Baths, the Monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants, the Girona History Museum, the Plaça Independencia, and the Museum of Cinema are some of Girona’s historic sites. A visit to the entire city and its iconic sites is a must!
