Giugliano in Campania, commonly called Giugliano, is a city and comune in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania, Italy. It is the most populous Italian city without a provincial capital, with 124,000 residents in 2017.
History
The Osci settled the territory of Giugliano in the 5th-4th century BCE and founded, among many others, Atella and Liternum, which flourished under Roman rule. There is an area known as Terra di Lavoro, which used to be the most fertile part of Campania.
An ancient city called Liternum once stood near “Lake Patria.”. It became part of the Roman empire in 194 BC. It is mainly known for being the residence of the elder Scipio Africanus, who retreated from Rome and died there. According to Seneca the Younger, he had a tomb and a villa. As a result of Genseric’s Vandals plundering and destroying the town in 455, the city was destroyed. Giugliano’s historical center is the result of the migration of the survivors.
Until 1207, Giugliano remained a small city. The Neapolitans destroyed Cuma in 1207, so some of its citizens, including the clergy and the cathedral capitular, took refuge in Giugliano. Giugliano’s fief is first mentioned in documents from 1270.
In sequence, the city was ruled by the Vulcano, Filomarino, Pignatelli, D’Aquino, Pinelli, and Colonna.
Geography
The city is situated on a fertile coastal plain north of Naples, which makes it ideal for supplying agricultural products to the city. Campania Felix was the name of the plain on which it sat in ancient Roman times.
