Giurgiu Overview
The city of Giurgiu is located in the southern part of Romania. A historical region in Muntenia, Giurgiu County, is the seat of Giurgiu County. Amidst mud flats and marshes on the left bank of the Danube, it faces the Bulgarian city of Ruse on the opposite side: a larger island shelters Smarda, the city’s port. Three small islands face the city. Railways connect the rich grain-growing land to the north with Bucharest; the first railway in Romania was built in 1869 and then extended to Smarda. In the past, Giurgiu exported timber, grain, salt, and petroleum and imported coal, iron, and textiles.
At the outskirts of Giurgiu, the Giurgiu-Ruse Friendship Bridge crosses the Danube, which Bulgaria and Romania share.
History
As archeological evidence shows, the area around Giurgiu was densely populated during the Dacian period (1st century B.C.), and Burebista’s capital was located here (Popeşti on the Argeş River). During Roman times, Theodorapolis was built here by the Roman emperor Justinian (485-565).
A Genoese merchant adventurer probably established Giurgiu as a port on the Danube in the 14th century, trading silks and velvets from the city.
A theory holds that they named the city after Genoa’s patron saint, San Giorgio (St George). However, Nicolae Iorga disputes this theory, claiming Giurgiu is just an old Romanian form of George.
As part of their efforts to control the Danube traffic, the Ottomans conquered it in 1420 under the reign of Mircea I of Wallachia. It appeared in Codex Latinus Parisinus for the first time in 1395. The Ottomans named the city Yergöğü, as in yer (earth) + gök (sky), but it may have been a result of the similar pronunciations of (San) Giorgio and “Yergöğü.”
As a fortified city, Giurgiu played an essential role in the wars to conquer the lower Danube. The scene of the October 1595 Battle of Giurgiu also played a role in Michael the Brave’s struggle against the Turks and in the later Russo-Turkish War (1787-1792). The building was burned down in 1659. The historic Giurgiu Clocktower was built in 1771 by the Ottomans as a Danube traffic surveillance tower. A castle on Slobozia was the only remaining defense, connected by a bridge to the shore after its fortifications were destroyed in 1829.
Between 1952 and 1954, the USSR built The Friendship Bridge, which connects Romania and Bulgaria over the Danube, between Giurgiu and Ruse.
Jewish history
In the 1820s, Sephardi Jewish merchants moved to Giurgiu from the Balkans, and Ashkenazi Jews settled later, leading to communal disputes. In 1899, a Zionist group of 70 members was formed. In 1910, 60 pupils attended a joint Jewish school that opened in 1878. By then, there were 533 Jewish residents or 4% of the population. The number of Jews living there had fallen to 207 by 1930, or 0.7%. At least half of the 113 Jews living there in 1941 were forced to forfeit their property to the Iron Guard. World War II led to the creation of a community.
