Halle Overview
Halle is a city and municipality in the province of Flemish Brabant, located in the district Halle-Vilvoorde. It is situated on the Flemish side of the Flanders-Wallonia language border on the Brussels-Charleroi Canal.
Halle is located on the border between the Flemish plains to the north (thick loam), and the undulating Brabant lands to the south (thinner loam). To the west, the city borders the Pajottenland. Halle is a Dutch-speaking city.
History
Halle’s history has always been shaped by borders. In this region, there were already Germanized Celtic or Celticized Germanic tribes in the prehistoric era before the Roman conquest. The daughter of an essential Merovingian personality, Saint Waltrude, gave some of her inherited land around Halle to the abbey chapter she had just founded in Mons in the 7th century. As a result, the region around Halle depended to varying degrees on the County of Hainaut until the French Revolution. A church dedicated to Mary was founded by Hubertus, archbishop of Tongeren, in the 8th century, which may have been the beginning of the devotion.
Since Jeanne, Countess of Flanders and Hainaut granted it its freedom charters in 1225, the town must have overgrown. As a wedding gift to John II, Count of Holland, and Hainaut, the miraculous statue of the Virgin arrived in Halle in 1267. Due to the cult of Mary, Halle became a vital frontier town between Hainaut and Brabant, attracting essential visitors such as Edward I of England and Ludwig the Bavarian. The 15th century saw the construction of a much larger church. As a result of Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy’s death in Halle in 1404, all subsequent Dukes of Burgundy were to visit the city. The church in Halle was the final resting place for Louis XI of France’s stillborn son in 1460.
