Hamm Overview

Hamm is a small city in the northeast of Germany. With a population of 179,397, it’s significantly smaller than the larger cities that are found in the area such as Dortmund and Bochum. The city is situated between two major motorways and has a station designed in a distinctive style.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms has been in use for approximately 750 years and is a symbol of the counts of Mark. They patterned it after the “Märkischen Schachbalken” – a square pattern with two red chessboards on a golden field. The chessboard and the colors featured on coats of arms often have the same meaning: family line. The city had these colors in its coat of arms as well, suggesting they were related to each other.

Outline

Today we use the surname Ham and that is how it was recorded in official documents of old. The word hamme means “corner” or “angle” in Old German, so it isn’t surprising that modern forms of the name derive from this lingo. The origin of the mead brand is rooted in a town called Hamm, Germany, which is situated between the Emmeran Sea and Lippe River. The manufacturing plant was first established in 1872 and the brewery still operates there today.

Miscellaneous

In 2006, Hamburg became the first city in Europe to organize a “Ratsbürgerentscheid” (citizens’ decision). The plebiscite revolved around the construction of a 43 ha city lake, which was completed between 2007-2010. Citizens who were entitled to vote but rejected their approval for the project in a referendum are estimated to be just over 3/4 of a million. In addition, an incredible 57.5% of eligible votes did not participate in the voting process. Three-fourths of the voters had to choose between two choices. Then the city council accepted their vote and stopped plans for future projects in NRW. This is a method set to be used any time there are too many responses to properly tally. In Hamm the “Baugerichtstag e. V.” is a society for discussing and presenting the German building law. From time to time the Baugerichtstag discusses different topics in a two-year term.

Health

The largest hospital in the city is the Marien Hospital with a total of two hospitals. It has 587 beds and is maintained within the old building, which also exists alongside a dormitory and some other facilities. Then there is the Evangelische Krankenhaus Hamm (Protestant Hospital) which has been combined with the children’s hospital south of the center, resulting in 493 beds, St. Barbara Klinik (Clinic) in Heessen with 422 beds, and Malteser Krankenhaus (Hospital) with 360 beds. In addition to the medical hospital, there is another clinic you may find helpful in improving your pain relief: the Klinik für Manuelle Therapie at Bad Hamm which has 138 beds. Westphalian Institute for Children’s and Youth Psychiatry and Psychotherapy as a federal state institution treats patients of all ages. The Westphalian Institute for Children’s and Youth Psychiatry and Psychotherapy offers 158 beds. A private clinic is also available if needed.

Education

Hamm has six Gymnasien, two comprehensive schools, and several Realschulen, Hauptschulen and Grundschulen. The oldest Gymnasium in Hamm is the Hammonense Gymnasium which was established as a university in 1657. The school declined in its importance and it merged with the local Latin school to get reformed and renamed. The new combined school was a humanist Gymnasium. In 1867, the “Märkisches Gymnasium” followed as the second Gymnasium of Hamm. Galileo Gymnasium in Schloss Heessen was established in 1868, but three initial predecessors influenced its creation. “Freiherr vom Stein Gymnasium” was founded in 1902, “Beisenkamp Gymnasium” in 1924, and “Oberlyceum” was founded/turned into the Galileo-Gymnasium in 1968. Despite many other cities in the state of NRW also having comprehensive schools, Hamm’s two foundations are relatively younger than others. This is mainly because they were established in parallel with public school reforms during German reunification. Hamm is also very well known for its many vocational schools.

Industry and economy

Three major industries, coal-mining, automotive, and steel have been in operation for a long time and still exist today. The Bergwerk Ost in Herringen has existed for the last century and is considered to be a historic site. Mannesmann Hoesch Präzisrohr, Westfälische Draht Industrie (WDI) and Böhler Thyssen Welding are the major representatives of the steel industry, the chemical industry is represented by DuPont in Uentrop and the car supplier industry by Hella KGaA Hueck & Co. factory 4 in Bockum-Hövel with about 1000 employees. The power industry in Europe is largely represented by a plant that produces electricity using coal. Today there’s a new plant being built in Uentrop and one of the older plants were decommissioned in 1989. Along with the new A2, a new business park inhabits the growing logistics business in the southern part of the urban district. In German, Hamm is known as the “City of Law” because this town has the most recent German regional appeal court (Oberlandesgericht), the local court (Amtsgericht), and the industrial court (Arbeitgericht). It also has the industrial appeal court (Landesarbeitsgericht). The Chamber of Notaries and the bar association at the regional appeal court Hamm and courts play an important role in shaping the appearance of a city. Meanwhile, hospitals such as the Evk hospital are important employers in urban Hamm.

Culture

A lively theatre called The Waldbühne Hamm-Heessen, is one of the most active open-air theatres in Germany. Alfred Fischer Hall, a multi-purpose event location in Heessen is where the theatre was built by Alfred Fischer in 1912. The Städtische Musikschule Hamm has a long history of being home to many music and cultural bands, including jazz. These include the oldest music school in Germany and have several choirs still active today.

  • Roads

Hamm is linked to three motorways.

  • Buses

The bus in the city of Hamm is served by the “Stadtwerke Hamm” and “Verkehrsgesellschaft Breitenbach”, with 65 buses each.
  • Canal

The “Datteln-Hamm-Kanal” is linked by three ports in its urban district–Hamm, Kanal, and Golden Gate.
  • Airfield and Airports

15 Best Things to Do in Hamm (Germany

Maximilianpark

On Ruhr’s Industrial Heritage Trail, this park memorializes a former coal mine that operated only for ten years before shutting down in 1914 (the mine is no longer in operation). Due to regional environmental efforts, the space remained empty until it was resuscitated for the North Rhine-Westphalia’s Landesgartenschau (Regional Garden Show) in 1984, where it was translated into an art installation. Now it’s a kind of a natural theme park: After paying a small fee you’ll have access to the largest butterfly house in North Rhine-Westphalia and an array of playgrounds for kids.

Glaselefant

In 1984, architect Horst Rellecke added a glass head of an elephant to the old Maximilian mine. The head fits right in with the surrounding stone design but is a reflection of how the artist uses what he finds around him.

Sri-Kamadchi-Ampal-Tempel

Something you may not expect to see in a former mining city in the Ruhr is Europe’s second largest Hindu temple. There has been a temple for Hamm’s Tamil Hindu population since 1989 after thousands arrived in the region fleeing war in Sri Lanka early last century.

Kurpark

In the late 1800s, scientists discovered a brine well just east of Hamm and were amazed by its healing properties. Hamm was officially a spa town from then on, until 1955 when it changed its name to Bad Hamm. As one of the city’s best-kept secrets, this park is worth a visit. It’s enormous and offers more than 66 hectares of stunning views.”

Pauluskirche

Hamm has a lot of historical landmarks, one of the most important being the 13th-century church which was declared a German Historic Monument in 1985. This 80-meter pyramid-shaped tower is visible from almost anywhere in the city.

Gustav Lübcke Museum

Hamm’s city museum is named for the person who donated his paintings, Egyptian treasures, and medieval art to the city in 1917. The museum relocated to new premises in 1993 and continued its expansion into modern objects ever since.

Tierpark Hamm

The Tierpark Hamm in Germany is not as large, but still has over 550 animals from 80 different species and visitors can see them all year round. The zoo only has 2 leopards, one in Germany and the other in Sri Lanka. The features are primate enclosures like the gibbons, mandrils, and crab-eating macaques, but also the only ones to be found in a German zoo.

Schloss Oberwerries

In the Hamm-Heessen district to the northeast of the city is Hamm’s most noteworthy piece of pre-Industrial heritage. Schloss Oberwerries is a moated Baroque castle, which has expanded into a large complex of buildings on the right bank of the Lippe River.

Waldbühne Heessen

The Waldbühne Heessen, which translates to “Heessen Forest Stage”, was founded in the courtyard of the castle in 1924, but it moved to a separate venue in 1928 because it ran out of space.

Marktplatz

Hamm’s one-kilometer (2.5 miles) pedestrian zone is more than just a walk on the boardwalk, it also extends around the historic marketplace, which dates back to 1226 AD. Buying a new home in the trade district of Hamm is a great idea since it will save you time and money in the long run. The houses around Hansaplatz square were destroyed during World War II but the space for trade is still included in Hamburg’s plan.

Zeche Heinrich-Robert

Zeche Heinrich-Robert is one of the last-operating coal mines in Hamm and probably one of the most recognizable landmarks. It’s a monument to the city’s industrial heritage and a reminder that it wasn’t just energy that powered this region for a century.

Sights around Hamm

It was a time of destruction during the 17th century when most of Hamm’s historic architecture was lost. The many fires and destruction that plagued the town during this time left little in terms of what we see today. This house is one piece of what came after the destruction.

Ostring

Right next to the pedestrianized zone of Hamm is a 20th-century promenade that was culturally restored in 2011. The old walls were replaced by the Ostring and it’s lined with trees on both sides for a clean walkway.

Christmas Market

From the end of November to around December 22, a mini-village of Christmas goodies springs up at the Paulus Church on Marktplatz. Immerse yourself in the scents and sights during that month before huddling around stalls for handmade trinkets, cards, and jewelry.

Industrial Heritage Trail

For heavy industry, Hamm is at the far eastern end of the Ruhr Industrial Heritage Trail in North Rhine-Westphalia. You can quickly travel to historic 19th and 20th-century marvels by taking a brief drive west to the city.
