Maximilianpark 

On Ruhr’s Industrial Heritage Trail, this park memorializes a former coal mine that operated only for ten years before shutting down in 1914 (the mine is no longer in operation). Due to regional environmental efforts, the space remained empty until it was resuscitated for the North Rhine-Westphalia’s Landesgartenschau (Regional Garden Show) in 1984, where it was translated into an art installation. Now it’s a kind of a natural theme park: After paying a small fee you’ll have access to the largest butterfly house in North Rhine-Westphalia and an array of playgrounds for kids.

Glaselefant 

In 1984, architect Horst Rellecke added a glass head of an elephant to the old Maximilian mine. The head fits right in with the surrounding stone design but is a reflection of how the artist uses what he finds around him.

Sri-Kamadchi-Ampal-Tempel 

Something you may not expect to see in a former mining city in the Ruhr is Europe’s second largest Hindu temple. There has been a temple for Hamm’s Tamil Hindu population since 1989 after thousands arrived in the region fleeing war in Sri Lanka early last century.

Kurpark 

In the late 1800s, scientists discovered a brine well just east of Hamm and were amazed by its healing properties. Hamm was officially a spa town from then on, until 1955 when it changed its name to Bad Hamm. As one of the city’s best-kept secrets, this park is worth a visit. It’s enormous and offers more than 66 hectares of stunning views.”

Pauluskirche 

Hamm has a lot of historical landmarks, one of the most important being the 13th-century church which was declared a German Historic Monument in 1985. This 80-meter pyramid-shaped tower is visible from almost anywhere in the city.

Gustav Lübcke Museum 

Hamm’s city museum is named for the person who donated his paintings, Egyptian treasures, and medieval art to the city in 1917. The museum relocated to new premises in 1993 and continued its expansion into modern objects ever since.

Tierpark Hamm 

The Tierpark Hamm in Germany is not as large, but still has over 550 animals from 80 different species and visitors can see them all year round. The zoo only has 2 leopards, one in Germany and the other in Sri Lanka. The features are primate enclosures like the gibbons, mandrils, and crab-eating macaques, but also the only ones to be found in a German zoo.

Schloss Oberwerries 

In the Hamm-Heessen district to the northeast of the city is Hamm’s most noteworthy piece of pre-Industrial heritage. Schloss Oberwerries is a moated Baroque castle, which has expanded into a large complex of buildings on the right bank of the Lippe River.

Waldbühne Heessen 

The Waldbühne Heessen, which translates to “Heessen Forest Stage”, was founded in the courtyard of the castle in 1924, but it moved to a separate venue in 1928 because it ran out of space.

Marktplatz 

Hamm’s one-kilometer (2.5 miles) pedestrian zone is more than just a walk on the boardwalk, it also extends around the historic marketplace, which dates back to 1226 AD. Buying a new home in the trade district of Hamm is a great idea since it will save you time and money in the long run. The houses around Hansaplatz square were destroyed during World War II but the space for trade is still included in Hamburg’s plan.

Zeche Heinrich-Robert 

Zeche Heinrich-Robert is one of the last-operating coal mines in Hamm and probably one of the most recognizable landmarks. It’s a monument to the city’s industrial heritage and a reminder that it wasn’t just energy that powered this region for a century. 

Sights around Hamm 

It was a time of destruction during the 17th century when most of Hamm’s historic architecture was lost. The many fires and destruction that plagued the town during this time left little in terms of what we see today. This house is one piece of what came after the destruction.

Ostring 

Right next to the pedestrianized zone of Hamm is a 20th-century promenade that was culturally restored in 2011. The old walls were replaced by the Ostring and it’s lined with trees on both sides for a clean walkway.

Christmas Market 

From the end of November to around December 22, a mini-village of Christmas goodies springs up at the Paulus Church on Marktplatz. Immerse yourself in the scents and sights during that month before huddling around stalls for handmade trinkets, cards, and jewelry.

Industrial Heritage Trail 

For heavy industry, Hamm is at the far eastern end of the Ruhr Industrial Heritage Trail in North Rhine-Westphalia. You can quickly travel to historic 19th and 20th-century marvels by taking a brief drive west to the city.
