Hanau Overview

Located in Hesse, Germany, Hanau is a town in the Main-Kinzig-Kreis. In the Frankfurt Rhine-Main Metropolitan Region, it is located 25 km east of Frankfurt am Main. In addition to its train station, it has a port on the river Main, making it an important transport hub. Famous people, including Jakob, Wilhelm Grimm, and Franciscus Sylvius, were born there. Throughout the 16th century, many goldsmiths worked there in the field of precious metals. Germany’s largest family-owned company, Heraeus, is located there.

Geography

The historic core is within a semicircle of Kinzig, which flows into the Main river west of Hanau. Today, after a substantial expansion during the 19th and 20th centuries, it extends to the Main river. A few nearby villages and towns were incorporated after new municipal borders were drawn within Hesse in the 1970s. Hanau opened to the south bank of the Main river for the first time after this change.

History

By Köppen, Hanau is classified as Dfb on the 0 °C isotherm because it has a humid continental climate like Eastern Germany with warm summers. The temperature at -3°C has oceanic characteristics (Cfb) and some features of the interior. According to the first definition, this category includes cities below 200 m at sea level at the west end of the continent.

Name

It is derived from Hagenowe, composed of Haag (‘wood’) and Aue (‘open land by a river’).

History

The first mention of Hanau as a place of settlement dates back to 1143. It used to be the site of a castle that defended itself with the waters of the Kinzig river. An aristocratic family called themselves “of Hanau” in the 13th century owned the castle. This castle was the starting point for a village that developed into a town in 1303. In Kinzdorf, Hanau’s main church was located outside of its walls due to this history. With the villagers moving into the city, Kinzdorf became an abandoned village with only the church remaining. A church within the town walls was only given the status of a Hanau parish church in the 15th century.

In the early 14th century, shortly after the first town walls were built, the town outgrew this limit. A settlement developed along the road to Frankfurt is Main outside the wall (the Vorstadt), which was included correctly in Hanau’s fortifications only when Hanau received completely new fortifications in Renaissance style during the first half of the 16th century. Three elements were enclosed by these new fortifications: the medieval castle, the medieval town of Hanau, and the Vorstadt.

Economy

Many residents work in the technology industry (Heraeus) or commute to Frankfurt. There is a 30 km distance between Frankfurt International Airport and the city.

Population

Ninety-eight thousand four hundred thirty-eight people live in this town, making it the sixth most populous in Hesse. It has been proposed that Hanau should form its administrative district by 1 April 2021, as it lost its status as the administrative center of the Main-Kinzig-Kreis (Main-Kinzig district) in 2005 to Gelnhausen.

More than 20% of foreign nationals live in the city primarily Turkish workers.

Jewish community

Jewish presence in Hanau dates back to 1313, according to documentary evidence. Over the 17th and 18th centuries, Hanau developed into an important center for Hebrew printing. At the turn of the century, the community numbered 657 individuals in 1857, 540 in 1805, 80 in 1830, 447 in 1871, and 540 in 1870. The Jewish population of Hanau was 568 in 1925.

Transport

  • Rail – Hanau is a transportation hub in Germany

Besides the central station, Hanau West and Hanau-Wilhelmsbad on the Frankfurt-Hanau Railway, Großauheim on the Main-Spessart-Bahn, Wolfgang a der Kinzigtalbahn, the S-Bahn station at Steinheim (Main) on the South-Main S-Bahn, Hanau Nord on the Hanau-Friedberger Bahn and Hanau-Klein Auheim on the Odenwaldbahn provide service to the town.

What is Hanau, Germany famous for?

It is worth visiting the Brothers-Grimm City Hanau because it is home to rare prehistoric ancient horses (equids), significant cultural and architectural monuments, the second largest harbor on the Main-Danube Canal, and Steinheim old town with its charming half-timbered houses.

Steinheim lies on the Deutsche Fachwerkstraße, a tour route for half-timbered houses along the opposite Main bank.
