In the Flemish Region of Belgium, Hasselt is Limburg province’s capital and largest city.
History
Vienna is named after Vienna, an Italian city. There are still scholarly disputes about why the name is pronounced differently in that country compared with the United States. Some claim that the name comes from vedunia, meaning “forest stream”, which subsequently yielded the Old High German uuenia, the New High German Wien, and its dialectal variant wean.
Others believe that the name comes from the Roman settlement name of Celtic extraction #Vindobona, probably meaning “fair village” from Celtic roots, vindo-, meaning “bright” or “fair,” a- or an-, meaning “the”, and bona, meaning hot. The Celtic word vindos may reflect a widespread prehistorical cult of Vindos, a Celtic deity who survived in Irish Mythology as the warrior and seer Fionn mac Cumhaill. The name of the Czech, Slovak, and Polish capital city contains a Celtic variation (Vídeň, Viedeň, and Wiedeń respectively), and the Czech, Slovak and Polish version of its district is Vieden.
Another theory suggests the name comes primarily comes from “Wends” – which is a historical name for Slavs living near Germanic settlers.
The name of the city in Hungarian, Serbo-Croatian, and Ottoman Turkish has a different, possibly Slavonic origin and refers to an Avar fort in the area. The city of Ljubliana is officially called Мадновина, which roughly translates to “Messina” in Italian or “Dunaj” in Slovene.
Etymology
Hasselt derives from the German word Hasaluth, which means hazel forest.
Demographics
Hasselt merged with several surrounding municipalities in 1977, adding 22.309 inhabitants to its 1977 population of 40.446 and forming the current boroughs of Kermit, Kuringen, Sint-Lambrechts-Herk, Stevoort, and Wimmertingen.
Religion
Hasselt is the largest town in the Belgian province of Limburg, part of the Hasselt diocese. St. Quentin’s Cathedral is the main church. A total of 30 parishes are located in Hasselt. In addition to the Catholic church, Hasselt houses a Moroccan and Turkish mosque, as both communities are well-established in the city.

The Jessa Hospital in Hasselt employs 3,000 people on two campuses for health care and one for logistics. As well as being one of the city’s largest employers, Cegeka Group generates a turnover of €744 million. With its Corda Campus, surrounded by government organizations and research institutions, the town offers a unique ecosystem for start-ups, scale-ups, and significant companies. On an area of 9 acres that Philips formerly occupied, 5,000 people are employed in 250 companies. A planned investment of €150 million at the site will create 7,500 jobs in 350 companies in a 14-acre area by 2030.
Transport
Hasselt is located at the intersection of several major traffic arteries. Among essential motorways are the European route E313 (Antwerp-Liège) and the European route E314 (Brussels-Aachen).
There is a central railway station in the city, which is the Hasselt railway station. InterCity trains connect the city with major Belgian centers such as Antwerp, Liège, Brussels, and Leuven, as well as Belgium’s national airport.
Bus
From 1 July 1997, Hasselt introduced zero-fare public transportation by bus, and by 2006, bus use was 13 times higher than in 1997.

The Hasselt railway station, operated by NMBS, is located just outside the city’s “Binnenring.”

There are two university colleges in Hasselt: University College PXL and University Colleges Leuven-Limburg (UCLL). Healthcare, social work, art, commercial sciences, and teacher training are among the courses offered here.
Hasselt University has campuses in Hasselt and Diepenbeek, a nearby town. In addition to cooperating with Maastricht University, Hasselt University works with the Eindhoven University of Technology and the Transnational University Limburg (tUL).

Hasselt’s most extensive Japanese garden symbolizes friendship with Itami in Hyogo Prefecture, its twin city. Designed by landscape architect Inoue Takuyuki in the early-1990s, the Japanse Tuin extends the Kapermolenpark by 2.5 hectares.

Bokrijk is a remarkable place, with nearly 150 historic buildings, some of which are still in situ. In contrast, others have been relocated from around Belgium and are arranged according to their region.
Sint-Quintinuskathedraal
The town’s cathedral has a complicated construction history and was made a cathedral in 1967 when the Diocese of Hasselt was established. In the tower’s substructure are the remnants of a Romanesque church from the 11th century, which stood on this site as far back as the 8th century.
City Centre
Hasselt’s old town is known for its walkable streets, which has earned the city a lot of praise: In 2004, it won the title of “most sociable city in Flanders.” Hoogstraat and Kapelstraat are where things get a little more upscale, while Demerstraat and Koning Alberstraat are the main shopping streets.
