The city of Herne is located in Germany, in the estuary of the Ruhr River, close to the cities of Bochum and Gelsenkirchen.
Herne was a tiny village until the 19th century but then grew significantly and became modern Herne. When the mining of coal (and possibly ore) and the production of coke (the fuel processed from the harvested coal) and steel began, the villages of the Ruhr area slowly grew into towns and cities because of the influx of people, mostly from the East (Germany as well as East-Prussia, Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia, Poland and beyond, even Italy and Spain), looking for, and find, work.
Herne is between Bochum and Recklinghausen, its Southernmost point; Gelsenkirchen and Münster are to its West and Dortmund are to its East. For a long time, the border between Herne and Recklinghausen was not fixed. It was instead at the Bochumer Strasse, but now that has changed as well. The Emscher River flows north of the canal and is a popular destination for horse fans. In the past, there were so many wild horses caught in the valley that it even had its nicknames like ‘Horse Valley’ or ‘Palace of Contemplation’. The “Cranger Kirmes” is important to the local community and many people rely on it as their major source of income. It’s no wonder they like to hold it every July in a town called Crange, which also developed into a popular location thanks to the festival. Herne was a city in the South of Germany that suffered little damage during World War II and thus became known as “The Golden City.”
Herne is a predominantly German-speaking city with historical buildings since the early 20th Century. It’s most famous for its major football clubs HV and Bayer 04 Leverkusen. One of the most significant landmarks in Herne is the Evangelische Hauptkirche, a Lutheran Church built in 1912 and has been called the “Kreuzkirche”. For you to find the Haranni cafe, just go a little bit west of Sodingerstrasse and cross over to the other side. Start your walking trek towards Wiescherstrasse and Janusz will guide you all the way there. If you can’t find the “Kreuzkirche” about ancient, beautiful, old buildings, we may all be contributing to their disappearance. Perhaps the “Harannistrass” reference is how it’s left with the short-term beauty but symbolizes years of neglect and disregard. Börnig and Crange joined together with former villages in the area to create the city of Herne. Farms bearing these famous names were probably founded in the 11th and 12th centuries and ended up a part of the city of Herne. Coal mines started operating in 1860, which then began a pattern of growth that has continued to this day.

Herne’s women’s basketball team has had a fairly recent reign of glory. They won the German championship and cup in 2019 and are well-known for their achievements. Herne-West is the derisive name of Schalke 04, traditionally used to taunt Borussia Dortmund fans.
Attracting four million people per year, North Rhine-Westphalia’s largest folk festival happens in Herne over ten days at the start of August. This tradition goes back as far as 600 years and began as a fair-to-sell horse bred around the Riparian Forest in the Middle Ages.
Visitors will get a chance to come across artifacts from a variety of periods, learn how history is told through archaeology, and feel like they are standing in the ancient past.
The mine was originally a colliery and then became a facility for the production of industrial coal, machines, and electric current. The buildings were built in the late 19th century and became a warehouse for coal by 1871. In 1972 artists’ groups relocated to the area which saw its use as spaces for housing workshops, studios, exhibition halls, and spaces where music could be heard.
The castle near the center of the city had many names and was first mentioned in 1243. It was a seat of a powerful family for 600 years before being transformed into a Renaissance palace.
The Schloss Emlichheim castle is home to a branch of the Emchertal Museum. The Städtische Galerie focuses on paintings and drawings and has pieces by some of the 20th century’s most prominent artists.
The park Gysenbergpark is located near Hernes in Sodingen and was inaugurated sometime in the 70s. It includes 31-hectors open for family fun and relaxation.
LAGO’s main pool is warm and welcoming for kids. The water sports center features an indoor wave pool, an outdoor pool, and a slide 112 meters long for some excitement. You feel like you’re in a spa and get a pool as well. There are also many different areas to relax or exercise. Finally, there’s a ton of actual salt here – so if you’re into that, go for it!
This row of Art Nouveau halls pays tribute to Herne’s mines, which began operations back in 1908. The air drills were manufactured here until 1983 when the tunnels closed down for good.
Opel’s company museum is considered a recreational offering, not an official one. It has been implemented in 1990 by Hilmar Born, a mechanical engineer.
One of the most interesting things about Ruhr’s industrial history is how it dealt with its sudden influx of workers in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The Mondpalast Theatre is one of Germany’s largest extant folk theatres and was founded in 2005. The building dates back to 1911 and is a marvelous piece of work from the Wilhelmine period. As long as you can follow the German language, don’t be discouraged from sampling the Ruhr’s earthy culture at The Mondpalast.
With the help of a new staircase and observation platform, people are now able to access nature at Halde Pluto. It offers an escape from city life and is there for health benefits too!
Up top, Herne’s pedestrian zone is packed full of life with lots of cafes, restaurants, and people all around. As you move further up the street towards Schloss Strünkede and Bahnhofstrasse, things become quite quieter and more peaceful.
You can get a lot of things to do with your time in the Ruhr, whether you need a break from work or it is just something to round out your day. For example, you can be within 15 minutes of Signal Iduna Park, the home stadium for FCD Dortmund football club.
Herne’s holiday market brings the focus on happiness in this cold winter. There are lots of activities to do despite the weather, with a lot of different crafts and snacks to try. The eight-meter-high artificial tree will have you feeling all warm and cozy underneath its many colorful lights. One of the best things about our society is its food; there are so many delightful treats out there. Our favorite is probably roasted almonds and bratwurst, but you can never go wrong with apple dipped in chocolate!
