Cranger Kirmes 

Attracting four million people per year, North Rhine-Westphalia’s largest folk festival happens in Herne over ten days at the start of August. This tradition goes back as far as 600 years and began as a fair-to-sell horse bred around the Riparian Forest in the Middle Ages.

LWL-Museum für Archäologie 

Visitors will get a chance to come across artifacts from a variety of periods, learn how history is told through archaeology, and feel like they are standing in the ancient past.

Künstlerzeche Unser Fritz ⅔ 

The mine was originally a colliery and then became a facility for the production of industrial coal, machines, and electric current. The buildings were built in the late 19th century and became a warehouse for coal by 1871. In 1972 artists’ groups relocated to the area which saw its use as spaces for housing workshops, studios, exhibition halls, and spaces where music could be heard.

Schloss Strünkede 

The castle near the center of the city had many names and was first mentioned in 1243. It was a seat of a powerful family for 600 years before being transformed into a Renaissance palace.

Städtische Galerie im Schlosspark Strünkede 

The Schloss Emlichheim castle is home to a branch of the Emchertal Museum. The Städtische Galerie focuses on paintings and drawings and has pieces by some of the 20th century’s most prominent artists.

Gysenbergpark 

The park Gysenbergpark is located near Hernes in Sodingen and was inaugurated sometime in the 70s. It includes 31-hectors open for family fun and relaxation.

LAGO 

LAGO’s main pool is warm and welcoming for kids. The water sports center features an indoor wave pool, an outdoor pool, and a slide 112 meters long for some excitement. You feel like you’re in a spa and get a pool as well. There are also many different areas to relax or exercise. Finally, there’s a ton of actual salt here – so if you’re into that, go for it!

Flottmann Hallen 

This row of Art Nouveau halls pays tribute to Herne’s mines, which began operations back in 1908. The air drills were manufactured here until 1983 when the tunnels closed down for good.

Opel Museum Herne 

Opel’s company museum is considered a recreational offering, not an official one. It has been implemented in 1990 by Hilmar Born, a mechanical engineer.

Zechensiedlung Teutoburgia 

One of the most interesting things about Ruhr’s industrial history is how it dealt with its sudden influx of workers in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Mondpalast 

The Mondpalast Theatre is one of Germany’s largest extant folk theatres and was founded in 2005. The building dates back to 1911 and is a marvelous piece of work from the Wilhelmine period. As long as you can follow the German language, don’t be discouraged from sampling the Ruhr’s earthy culture at The Mondpalast.

Halde Pluto 

With the help of a new staircase and observation platform, people are now able to access nature at Halde Pluto. It offers an escape from city life and is there for health benefits too!

Bahnhofstrasse 

Up top, Herne’s pedestrian zone is packed full of life with lots of cafes, restaurants, and people all around. As you move further up the street towards Schloss Strünkede and Bahnhofstrasse, things become quite quieter and more peaceful. 

Days Out 

You can get a lot of things to do with your time in the Ruhr, whether you need a break from work or it is just something to round out your day. For example, you can be within 15 minutes of Signal Iduna Park, the home stadium for FCD Dortmund football club.

Christmas Market 

Herne’s holiday market brings the focus on happiness in this cold winter. There are lots of activities to do despite the weather, with a lot of different crafts and snacks to try. The eight-meter-high artificial tree will have you feeling all warm and cozy underneath its many colorful lights. One of the best things about our society is its food; there are so many delightful treats out there. Our favorite is probably roasted almonds and bratwurst, but you can never go wrong with apple dipped in chocolate!
