Hoboken Overview
The district of Hoboken is in the Flemish Region of Belgium, the arrondissement and city of Antwerp. It is located in the middle of the Scheldt river, and the Middle Dutch is the origin of the district’s name.
Name
Hoboken is derived from the Medieval Dutch Hooghe Buechen or Hoge Beuken, meaning tall or high beech trees. Today, Hoboken is home to a hospital called “Hoge Beuken.”
There is a local legend that the name “Hoboken” is derived from a little boy who dropped his sandwich in the Schelde river, which flows near Hoboken. “Ho” is a way of saying “stop” in the local dialect of Dutch, so he must have shouted, “Ho, boken!”.
History
Hoboken’s first historical records date back to the 1135 parish of capellam de hobuechen qua lib am. In those days, Hoboken belonged to Wilrijk in the Duchy of Brabant. A small village became an industrialized district of Antwerp since then.
Perwijs, the countess of Vianden, the count of Flanders, and the houses of Luxembourg and Orange-Nassau owned the fiefdom of Hoboken between the 13th and 15th centuries. Melchior Schetz (the new Lord of Hoboken) purchased Rumst and Hoboken from William of Orange in 1559.
Antwerp became the capital of the Dutch Revolt in 1579 after joining the Union of Utrecht. Antwerp was captured in 1585 by Alessandro Farnese, Duke of Parma and Piacenza. A part of Hoboken was flooded, and enemy soldiers raided the city during the siege of Antwerp. Antwerp’s Protestant citizens had four years to settle their affairs before leaving the city as part of its surrender terms. The Dutch Golden Age began when most settlers moved to the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands (the unoccupied part of the Union of Utrecht). A generation later, Genoa controlled Antwerp’s banking, and Amsterdam became the region’s new trading center – the population grew from 30,000 in 1570 to 60,000 in 1600, and the Amsterdam Canal District was built to accommodate Antwerp’s traders and bankers (including the Jewish people).
Culture
A 5K beer server race is held every year in Hoboken. According to legend, the tradition began with the proclamation of the United States of Belgium in 1777 (Dutch: Verenigde Nederlandse Staten, French: États-Belgiques-Unis). It is held annually on the first Sunday in November and often coincides with All Hallows’ Day.
