The city of Huelva is located at the mouth of the rivers Odiel and Tinto in southwestern Spain. In the north of town is the whitewashed Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Cinta chapel, dating from the 15th century. The Huelva Museum houses an extensive collection of archaeological artifacts. A striking baroque facade adorns La Merced Cathedral. Plaza de las Monjas features palm-flanked squares topped with statues of explorer Christopher Columbus.
Until the 1980s and 1990s, the mainstream view was that Huelva was primarily an autochthonous Tartessian settlement (even the same Tartessos mentioned in Greek sources). Still, some later pictures tended to emphasize a multiethnic enclave mixing natives with peoples mainly of Phoenician and later Greek descent. As a result of the (unsystematic) discovery of Phoenician archaeological materials in Méndez Nez-Las Monjas, the Phoenician presence chronology was reevaluated. Despite the tentative identification of Huelva with Tartessos not being discarded, the evidence suggests Huelva-Onoba was a very early Phoenician colony that developed in parallel with a sure “dismantling” of the idea that Tartessos was a mostly autochthonous archaeological culture. Tarshish was also identified as the biblical city.
In terms of local Phoenician presence, the first contacts have been dated back to 1015 and 975 BCE. However, remains such as those found in the Méndez Núñez-Las Monjas go so far as to likely prove a Phoenician settlement of the 9th century BCE, especially to resemble a founding date of a Tyrian settlement from the reign of Ithobaal I between 875 and 850, although the Méndez Núñez-Las Monjas’ items have also been brought forward to consider a 10th-century BCE chronology in the era of Hiram I (c. 975–950). Eteocypriots, Cypriot Phoenicians, and Sardinian Phoenicians may have joined the continental Phoenicians at the outpost.
Silver, copper, purple dye, salted fish, and other Phoenician exports were made possible by its function as a Phoenician outpost and a transit point between the Northern Atlantic, Southern Atlantic, and the Mediterranean. The Assyrian subjugation of the Levant resulted in economic crisis and social unrest resulting in a significant increase in population starting in the mid-8th century BCE.
The town of Huelva is located in the Gulf of Cadiz, on the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula. Costa de la Luz is the coastline that straddles the Gulf of Cádiz. Located between the Odiel and Tinto rivers, the city borders an estuary formed by their confluence.
The local bus company Grupo Damas is based in Huelva. Today, Huelva’s train station is on a spur line, which is different from what it used to be. It is not possible to take a train to Portugal. On Naviera Armas’ Volcan del Teide ferry, one can travel weekly between Arrecife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria from Huelva.
Airports are not available in Huelva. Faro Airport (93 km) and Seville Airport (95 km) are the closest airports to the city as the crow flies.
According to the 2010 census, Huelva had 149,410 residents. With the exploitation of mineral resources in the area during the nineteenth century and the construction of the Development Pole in the 1960s, the city experienced a population boom. In 1787, the population was 5,377, but by 1857 it had grown to only 8,519 people. By 1970, the town had 96,689 residents, up from 21,539 in 1900, 56,427 in 1940, and 56,427 in 1940. By 1991, the population reached 141,479 after rapid growth in the following decades.
The climate in Huelva and the metropolitan area is considered Mediterranean (Köppen: Csa), characterized by warm and wet winters and warm and dry summers. A typical annual temperature of 23.9°C (75.0°F) is recorded during the day and 12.4°C (54.3°F) at night. There are 52 rainy days each year, and the average annual precipitation is 525 mm (200.7 in). In Ronda Este, extreme temperatures have been recorded as high as 43.8 °C (110.8 °F) on 25 July 2004 and as low as 3.2 °C (26.2 °F) on 28 January 2005. Maritime air warms up over the river delta in summer, making Huelva warmer than places on the coast.
Huelva is a popular tourist destination for Spanish tourists, but British and European package tourists have yet to venture here because there are no high-rise resorts. Because of this, it makes for a great holiday destination for anyone looking for a more laid-back holiday experience.
Christopher Columbus sailed from the province to begin his first voyage of exploration to the New World in 1492, making it a famous location. Huelva’s folkloric soul is reflected in its fandangos (dance and music), which originated in Portuguese Fado but have been adapted to represent Spanish folklore.
