The city of Hunedoara lies in Transylvania, Romania, in the county of Hunedoara. Located near the Poiana Ruscă Mountains, it administers five villages: Boş (Bós), Groş (Grós), Hăşdat (Hosdát; Hochstätten), Peștişu Mare (Alpestes), and Răcăştia (Rákosd).
It includes one of Transylvania’s most critical Gothic-style secular buildings: the Hunyad Castle, which is closely linked to the Hunyadi family. Despite being destroyed by fire five times, the castle underwent many reconstructions by Austro-Hungarian and Romanian authorities. Along with the court, the town became a market for the nearby mountain regions and a center for iron production. The population of Hunedoara reached 86,000 by the end of the 20th century. As a result of the loss of the market after the fall of the Iron Curtain, the city’s steelworks gradually ceased to exist. As a result, the town’s prosperity was shattered, but new investments are now helping it bounce back.
Romanians comprise most of the population, with Hungarians and Roma being the most significant minorities. Numerous parks line the city streets, and poplars and chestnut trees line the sidewalks. Within a few kilometers of the city, there are many tourist attractions, including a large dam with tourist facilities.
There is an inextricable link between the name of the town and the name of the Hunyadi family (also known as Corvinus). As many Hungarian cities have this suffix, it is most likely that the Romanian name “Hunedoara” is a transliteration of the Hungarian word “Hunyadvár,” meaning “Castle of Hunyad.” According to history, the following terms have been recorded: Hungnod (1265), Huniad (1278), Hwnyadwar (1409), and Vayda Hunyadi (1575). It indirectly references John Hunyadi by its Hungarian meaning Vajdahunyad (voivode Hunyad).
Sânpetru (Saint Peter) hill near the castle and surrounding villages has been discovered with Stone Age tools. From the Iron Age onward, the area was rich in iron extracted by Thracian tribes. It was located close to Hunedoara and supplied by the iron produced here to provide the Dacian fortresses of the Orăştie mountains, including Sarmiszegetusa, which became the center of religious and political power for Dacia. Near the castle on Sânpetru Hill, remains of eight Dacian iron furnaces have been found. Several Dacian and Roman imperial coins were discovered at the site, testifying its importance.
As Dacia became a Roman province around 106 AD, the iron-rich region drew the attention of the Romans, who built furnaces to exploit it. “Villa Rustica” emerged in Teliuc, a Roman fortification on Sanpetru hill, the outpost of the famous legio XIII Gemina with its main castrum at Apullum in Dacia.
Other Roman artifacts were discovered in the city area and Pestis, where remains of a Roman village were found. There was also a new capital city for the Roman province of Dacia in the vicinity, Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa.
As a result of the Roman military and administrative retreat during the Migration Period, there are no significant historic sites in the region. However, it is possible that iron activity continued. Goths, Huns, Slavs, Pechenegs, Magyars, and Cumans, made significant contributions to the ethnic makeup of the region.
The ethnicity of Transylvania’s population before the Hungarian conquest is a topic of ongoing scholarly debate (see Origin of the Romanians). Minor political feuds (ruled by knjazes) developed after 1000 as part of the Kingdom of Hungary. Pechenegs and Cumans held political power south of the Carpathians, and Hunedoara served as a buffer zone for the Hungarian Crown. Over time, the Vlach populations in the nearby mountains developed an original Highlander culture. Woodlanders dominated the area’s demographics, and their land is called “ara Pădurenilor” (Woodlanders Country). Additionally, there were many German Saxon colonists brought by the Hungarian Crown after the Mongol Invasion and Romani immigrants from India.
Known as Hungnod in 1265, the city was an important hub for leather tanning and wool processing. Hunedoara became an important center for iron extraction and processing in Transylvania. “Corpus Inscriptiorum Latinorum” refers to a resident as “netas ibi, ubi forum nascitur,” which means “born where iron was born.” The town industry was essential for manufacturing weapons and tools for the region.
Before modern times, Hunedoara’s ethnic balance was more diverse than elsewhere. The Romanian majority was already substantial in the area during the rise of nationalism, and ethnic friction was scarce in Transylvania (see Magyarization and Romanization).
As of the 1850 census, there were 1,937 residents, including 1,275 Romanians, 248 Hungarians, 237 Germans, 101 Slovaks, and 86 Roma. Ninety-two people belonged to Orthodox, 370 to Greek Catholic, 316 to Roman Catholic, 181 to Reformed, 42 to Evangelical, and 36 to Jews. 1,987 Romanians, 1,896 Hungarians, 365 Germans, and 101 Slovaks were recorded in the 1900 census.
Hunedoara, one of Europe’s most modern bowling alleys, hosted the 2002 Bowling World Cup. A swimming pool and red-clay tennis courts are also available as sports facilities. Hunedoara is home to several notable athletes, including Mihai Leu, the former WBO boxing world champion and national rally champion; Michael Klein (footballer); Maria Cioncan, an Olympic bronze medalist, and Bogdan Lobonţ, a prominent goalkeeper in football.
