Ieper / YpresOverview

The Belgian province of West Flanders includes the town of Ypres (leper). Many cemeteries, memorials, and war museums honor the battles during World War I here on the Ypres Salient battlefields. Many important buildings, including Sint-Maartenskathedraal (St. Martin’s Cathedral) and its soaring spire, were carefully reconstructed after being destroyed during the war.

History

The Romans raided Ypres in the 1st century B.C., making it an ancient city. It was founded on the river Ieperlee and was first mentioned in 1066.

The Canterbury Tales mentions Ypres as a prosperous Flemish city with 40,000 people in 1200 AD, renowned for its linen trade with England.

Ypres, the third largest city in Flanders (after Ghent and Bruges), played a significant role in developing the textile industry. The markets of Novgorod in Kievan Rus’ sold textiles from Ypres in the early 12th century. Much of the old city was destroyed by a major fire in 1241. In addition to the Battle of the Golden Spurs, the Battle at Mons-en-Pévèle, the Peace of Melun, and the Battle of Cassel, the mighty city was also involved in important treaties and battles.

It was built in the 13th century when Cloth Hall became famous. The cats, then a symbol of the devil and witchcraft, were also thrown off Cloth Hall at this time, possibly in an attempt to rid the hall of evil demons. The town now holds a triennial Cat Parade to commemorate this act.

When textile workers held guns against their bosses in 1377, they were hanged, accused of rebellion, and burned in the bonfire by the Inquisition, accused of heresy (N Cohn, 1981:86).

Between May and August 1383, Ypres was besieged by English forces led by bishop Henry le Despenser during the Norwich Crusade. In 1561, Ypres became the seat of the new Diocese of Ypres, and Saint Martin’s Church was elevated to a cathedral.

Economy

Ypres is a historic city that generates significant income from tourism but also has several industrial areas. In the north of Ypres, along the Ieperlee canal, there is a wind farm and space for 120 companies.

Ieper Business Park connects industrial and office areas as a speech recognition company. Lernout & Hauspie occupied that office area, originally called “Flanders Language Valley” (similar to Silicon Valley), until it went bankrupt. Since then, the office area has had many difficult years where many offices have been unused, and those years are mostly over now, and the site currently employs approximately 1000 people.

In addition, several smaller industrial areas south of Ypres, like the Picanol area.

Transport

Trains run hourly to Kortrijk from the NMBS railway station in Ieper.

Taking about 75 minutes with two stops, it can also be accessed from Brussels via Eurostar.

Population

35,039

Climate

Ieper has a comfortable summer climate with partly cloudy skies and a very cold, windy, and mostly cloudy winter climate. Temperatures typically range from 34°F to 73°F throughout the year, rarely dropping below 22°F or exceeding 82°F. The best time to visit Ieper for warm-weather activities is from late June to early September.
