The settlements of today’s city and its vicinity developed thanks to lively trade with the Celts in the 1st century B.C. and with the Romans between the 1st and 5th centuries A.D. As a result of the amber route passing through here, this was facilitated. The local population sold salt and craft products (including amber).

Due to soloing, craft production, and agriculture, this area developed into a relatively compact settlement complex in the 11th century. The first mention of Inowrocław is in an 1185 document by Prince Leszek, son of Boleslaw the Curly, describing the town as Novus Wladislaw. The name was probably given in honor of Wadysaw Herman or to distinguish it from Nowy Wocawek, the new settlement established by the flood refugees from Wocawek. In addition to a large market, salt works were nearby when the city was founded. At the end of the 12th century, it probably became the seat of a castellany.

Prince Kazimierz Konradowic brought the Franciscans to Inowroclaw in 1237 or 1238, giving them a plot of land on which they built a monastery that was demolished in the 19th century. The Pomeranian prince Witopek’s army plundered and burned the town at the turn of the summer and autumn of 1238. The city was likely chartered according to modern Silesian models after this invasion and before the wedding with Konstancja (daughter of Prince Henry II the Pious), which took place in 1239. The medieval grid can still show streets and squares from medieval times.

In Inowroclaw, the Dukes of Kujawy and the starosts of Inowroclaw held their thrones. Inowroclaw was the seat of the starost and the center of the point in the 14th century, and it was also the seat of the noble courts, the land courts, and then the town courts, which operated there until the end of the 18th century.
