Jesenice Overview
Jesenice is a Slovenian town and the seat of the Municipality of Jesenice on the southern side of the Karawanks, bordering Austria to the north. It’s known as home to mining and iron-making industries and Slovenia’s largest steel company.
Name
Sources from 1337 refer to the town of Jesenice as villa de Jesenicza and in 1381 as Assnigkh – both Croatian dialectal forms. In 1493-1501 it was called Jasnickh and Aisnstnick. The name ‘Jeseni’ is derived from the name of Jesenik, the Slovenian mountain region. The suffix -ě became -I in the local dialect and was reinterpreted as a masculine plural nominative. The accusative of it (in -e) was reinterpreted as today’s feminine singular nominative. The name “Aßling” is derived from the word “Vestnik,” which is Slovenian for ‘ash woods.’ It’s a small town in Bavaria, Germany, and was named because the city is located in an ash forest.
History
Jesenice was first mentioned in an official document from 1004 by King Henry II of Germany. Nearby Bled (named Veldes back then) also came up in the paper. At the time, there were no settlements in Assling, not to be confused with Murova – which means “low-lying.” Slowly, a settlement began to grow around the area as it became more and more recognized. This is where St Leonard’s Church stands today. The March of Carniola passed to the Austrian House of Habsburg upon victory in the Battle of the Marchfeld in 1278.
There is not much early history of Jesenice, but most sources focus on its ironworks. One of the oldest is a set of mining rights issued to the Carinthian counts of Ortenburg in 1381. According to the document, the first settlements in the area (like Planina pod Golico) were founded on the southern slopes of the Karawanks due to the need for wood, flowing water for mills, and iron ore. Iron extraction has grown exponentially with the advent of new techniques over the last few years. That has led to a greater need for water energy, and small streams on the slopes of the Karawanks are no longer sufficient. The ore-extracting industry was moved to the valley in 1538 when Bernardo Bucellini from Bergamo gained permission from the Habsburg King Ferdinand I to move the forge to a more comprehensive water source, the Sava Dolinka River. The settlement fused with nearby accommodations, creating a small town and eventually an industrial center. Ironworks continue to mine ore from the slopes of the Karawanks.
The House of Ortenburg was the most dominant feudal family in the area, starting around the 11th century. They were at their apex in the 13th century, and many examples support this, such as how their lands spanned across all of Sava Valley from its source to its confluence. The House of Ortenburg was keen on promoting mining in the Upper Sava Valley and encouraged colonization where ore was plentiful. Jesenice was first established as a small town in the 14th century. Several settlements, including Plavž, Sava, and Murova, were founded in the late 15th and early 16th centuries by King Alexander I of Yugoslavia. All these villages were amalgamated into one town on March 20.
Geography and climate
Jesenice is a historic town in Upper Carniola, in the Upper Sava Valley. The municipality is flanked by Karawanks to the north and a plateau to the south in Mežakla. The hamlet of Planina pod Golico is 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) north of Jesenice and attracts many tourists during Springtime due to its spectacular living conditions. The Kranjska Gora resort village is 25 kilometers from the town of Jesenice, while other nearby settlements include Hrušica, Slovenski Javornik, and K.
Jesenice’s climate is transitioning between temperate and continental, mixing in strong alpine undertones.

Economy
When Slovenia joined the E.U. in 2004 and gained access to funding sources, Jesenice experienced a huge urban reconstruction. Projects include:
- Reconstructing some old parts of the town.
- Building a second high school.
- Improving existing sports grounds.
Almost all of the steel mill buildings were demolished in the 50s. The existing ironworks has undergone extensive modernization and now employ roughly 1,350 workers. A new town center was built in the old industrial part of town, with a new seat of local government. It features two shopping centers, one located in the new town center and another near Plavž.
Transportation
Jesenice has good road connections. The shortest route from Austria on the Karawanks Tunnel goes through Jesenice. The Regional road R-201/R-452 starts in Italy and leads to Jesenice on its way to Kranjska Gora. The A2 motorway heading from Ljubljana takes off towards Austria and Germany.
Jesenice is a critical railway junction linking the town with neighboring Austria. Several trains go to Nova Gorica and Italy daily, whereas international connections from Zagreb will stop in Jesenice when continuing their journey.
There are also bus and coach connections to other places in Slovenia. Numerous stops and connections make your journey easy and comfortable. To reach Jesenice, you can travel by bus or coach, which has stops at Ljubljana Airport or any of the local agencies. You can also get tickets directly from either the driver or at a nearby travel agency.
Education
There are a variety of schools in Jesenice, but only one college exists. There are two secondary schools, two primary schools, and a music school.
Religion
The biggest organized community in Jesenice is that of the Catholics, although many immigrants still live in the town, especially from Bosnia and Herzego. There are also lots of Orthodox Christians from Serbia. A significant portion of Jesenice’s population prefers to identify as atheists.
